A new and old topic, it has nothing to do with the usual "I love spartans -300, Alexander the Great" mainstream shit, we all know those kiddies trying to look so authentic like their role models from the movies, not even knowing where Greece is on the map.
No, its all about the love for this team-focussed art of fighting (in crpg!) Maybe it affects only 10% of players, still its worth to discuss in my eyes, as the numbers of hoplites seem to mount in the last days.
[ There are a few older topics about this style of fighting, I read all the stuff. Still, I need your thoughts here guys, especially from those who mostly play with the spear+shield combo.
How do you play as hoplite? Do you fight from the frontline, stabbing aggressively, or are you the more disciplined guy in the second row, looking for a nice stun? Are some guys even playing Ninja style with it? Have you got some hints how to support the teammates best? I´m curious...thoughts welcome as mentioned ]
Edit: still youre welcome to share, but this post by Ronin is the godfather post of all hoplite related topics http://forum.c-rpg.net/index.php/topic,34674.0.html
The next polls will be about your preferences in terms of armor and any side arms.
PS: @haters, excuse the multi polling, it´s not possible to integrate various polls in one threat

I'd read the guide, all information in there.

Hoplite is such an awesome fighting style in real life. I'm really hoping they find a way to make it more interesting and viable in Mount and Blade 2. After all, spear and shield was the most common equipment in any pre gunpowder era.
Still nice to see the amount of hoplites on the rise. I used to prefer the warspear, it was somewhat viable in a 1 vs 1. Dunno after turnrate nerf and polestagger removal.

Ahhh yesss, you mean that one!

kk, so lets forget about your thoughts, just vote :D !!

But why is there such a rise of folks using this equipment? Did anything happen to the game balance/mechanics?
-
I am using a masterwork spear and a board shield. The shorter length means you dont have to turn your stabs very much, and 99 speed makes it lightning fast. I love dueling with a spear and shield, using feints, spins and kicks.
-
MW Warspear, guess its the dream of every spearman
A board shield, doesnt it make you slow in turning/moving?
Somewhere I read that only round shaped shields allow you to maneuver 100%
True or false?

On hoplite alt, it's heavy round shield and ashwood pike, because of length for horse killing.
-
I use the war spear, especially when with other PL guys. If one of them continues striking at a 2h and the 2 handers just constantly block down you can quickly switch out the shield and hit them with a side swipe whilst they are blocking your team mate. Works a treat.
Definitely my favourite infantry class, even if the turn speed nerf did fuck up swinging a strike around shielders.
If you run with 1 other hoplite you can keep a guy stunned with consecutive stabs as well if you time it right. The war spear is fing lethal as an aggressive hoplite due to its length (keep enemy at bay), speed (95 speed means you can often outstab as well as outrange), sheathable so I can use the hand axe in close quarters and pierce damage (28 woot). You can take down cav with it pretty easily to. I think I've only lost one in a head on head with a cav and that was due to my awful timing. On a good run you can get 4-5 kills in 1 round if you stick with you infantry and time your stabs well.
If you're caught on your own though its not a great dueling class for obvious reasons. Though thats why I prefer the warspear because it at least gives you some viability in that area.
If I was going solely anti-cav protecting teammates and setting up stuns from the second row of charges I'd obviously use the Ashwood Pike for its length.
My full equipment set up is:
- Barbutte
- Pranoia Armour
- Leather Gloves
- Leather Boots
- Hoplite Shield
- War Spear
- Hand Axe
15/21 build with 7 ath, 7 shield, 5 PS, 4 IF, 154 wpf in polearm and 6 wm at level 30.

Not warspear, masterwork normal spear.
I have only 3 shield skill till next level and is best option. I like how it looks also.
No not true.

I see... made good experience with the quickstabbing normal spear (+0) as well, although the space to fight has to be very limited to fully utilize this weapon, like in an urban map or siege e.g.
sold red tassel spear immediately though, any fans of this spear please correct me when I think it´s shit, lacking killing power and not having any added value in comparison with warspear

Where is the iron staff?! :o

While I am not currently playing a hoplite, it is probably my favorite class.
I just love the sheer versatility of it and when I'm sick of raging, I go hoplite.
-Great support with teammates, the +50 reach from 1 handed animation is really useful to hit enemies from further away.
-Your shield makes you much less vulnerable to archers, crossbowmen and throwers.
-Your long reach is useful against cavalry.
-In duels or similar, put your shield on your back and you now have a perfectly viable dueling weapon.
You can literally do anything as hoplite.

Glad to see hopliting has exploded recently. A lot of easy kills as 90% of them have no idea what they are doing =D.
