Title: Hello!
Post by: Cheomesh on July 09, 2012, 03:02:57 pm
Hi, I'm a new CRPG player and I figured this might be the place to introduce myself.  I've been a M&B player for more than six years, way back in .3 something.  I didn't get on Warband when it first came out, but a few days ago I saw a friend of mine playing CRPG and decided to take the plunge.  Managed to get to level 21 in two days due to a load of freetime being dumped on me.  I'm not good.  Some of you might recognize me as the chap who flounders around with throwing weapons, that guy who's bad with a mace or that guy who does rock duels in the Duel server.  Probably half the people who recognize me probably would only recognize the back half of me, as that's where I usually get lanced.

Anyways, this game's fun and once I "retire" Cheomesh I plan to do a more solid build.  At the rate I'm going it shouldn't be long, unless it suddenly gets crazy hard.  I may simply respec, as it's only costing "half" my XP (which according to the site puts me down to only level 17).  I'll have to check but I think that also takes my items away.

Look forward to playing with you guys!

It will take you longer than you think to get to retire, getting to lev 21 is the easy part, getting the next 10 levels, not so easy.

BTW welcome to the mod, if you do really good with your class, some group will inevitably call for it to be nerfed untill it is useless.

Hello.

Respec does "only" take away half your exp. Do not worry about items, you won't ever lose them by respec or retirement.
However a pro tip is, NEVER start to respec. It is hell, once started you won't be able to stop. In my current gen I respecced 6 times already, leaving me in this gen for about a month already (I could have been 31 already if I didn't).
If it is your first gen and you really did a mistake, I would do that of course. But later on, if you decide to retire, better dont do that. Will only waste your time. :)

Oh and don't worry about skill. Fun is what is important anyway!

edit: ye, regarding level 31. Being level 21 is around 750k experience. Finishing level 30 is 8,7kk experience, that is a bit more.

Thanks!  I'm in the midst of reading through threads on those; particularly on how to become a better thrower and how to be a good piker for my next build.

Beginner's section of the forum is a nice place to go for new players.  One big tip, use the character calculators to build for level 30 (since you're retiring at level 31 most likely).  Also don't respec unless you absolutely need to.  Getting to level 30 is about 4.x million XP, getting from 30 to 31 is about the same 4.something million.

I just don't understand this, I am pretty sure that when Asians have any trouble with pronouncing anything in english, its the r and they replace the r with an l, not the other way around.

So some have no problem saying hello, and pronouncing the "L's" ?

No, it's the other way around, at least in Japanese.

They have no "L" sound, so they replace it with an R.

Congratulation on actually greeting the community, and reading the guides.

Also, be careful, upkeep is a bitch.
Don't buy an item just because you have "exactly" the gold.

Good luck, and see you on the battlefields.

Perhaps its Chinese then that does it the other way. The stereotypical asian accent in my country atleast always replaces r's with l's.

Better yet - bind it to something practical, like mouse 3! (I've burned through two mouses already thanks to this, so maybe don't listen to me)

Thanks for all the welcomes!  I'm certainly putting some effort into improving though I'll admit some rounds are rather frustrating.  Even if I'm 1:22 at this point, clunking someone with my mace is very satisfactory.  Probably would have been wiser to start with a supporting role, however!

I've played other persistant-ized versions of games before (one for Company of Heroes springs to mind) and this one is significantly less horrible to new players.  At least in this one you can fall back on supporting instead of Championing and actually make tangible gains.  Originally when I watched gameplay I expected it to be the usual "keep what you kill" sort of XP / Level gain, and figured I (and other newbies) would be doomed to being fodder for lack of kills.  Upon asking and discovering that XP (almost) completely divorced from kills, I decided to take the plunge.

Kinda.  Years ago in high school I asked around about this at a Japanese Language Club.  There's something like an L, but it's pronounced like a hybrid between L and R in English.  Certainly distinctive; I was never particularly good, but it sounded kind of like Lurr or perhaps Ljurr, if I were to follow the head-lady's brother.  Additionally, it's a character that's only in their alphabet reserved for foreign words, so exposure is lessened.  That said, I'm by no means an expert (Estudié Español, no Japonés), so I'm probably off somewhere.

Hello and welcome to the cRPG Cheomesh, I hope you like it so far.

Also I will pay you 50k if you will play as an archer in your next generation. We need more troops to hold the evil melee and cavalry villains at bay.

I...may consider that.  I hardly ever play archers.

I use left shift for mine.

View outfit key is a really great way to avoid getting lanced in the back.

Sounds like a decent key to me, all that matters is that you can do every action with ease while keeping it pressed. Outfit view is literally the button I press the most in this game. I press it when I'm walking, I press it when I'm standing still, I press it when I'm taking a corner, I press it when I'm baiting an archer or a crossbowman into a shot, I press it when I'm leading a charge and want to make sure my teammates are following without showing my possible lack of confidence in 'em, hell, I'll sometimes use it while holding an attack on someone to check out my surroundings in the middle of a fight.

Without outfit view I would be nothing in this game - outfit view, you COMPLETE ME.

Ah yes the tilde.  I was fiddling around with that the other day, admiring my armor when I realized I could see over a wall with it.  Started to figure that's how some people had neigh precognative ability.

I think, since I'll only lose a few levels, it might be best to respec now and run with it; I'm really only fixing a few mistakes and not going with a totally different build.  I was worried about chronic respecing, but all I'm after is removing my throwing as I'm not much good at it and I don't have much fun with it.

Thanks for the imput guys!

Best of luck, you certainly have the right mentality to survive! Remember that you can create "alts" and then even use the "skip the fun" feature on them to test out a weird build (just don't use STF on your min  )

Alright, I respeced and am already doing better.  Regained one of the four levels I lost in a few rounds (chroically on the underdog team) so I think I'll be able to catch back up this weekend.  I now have 122 Single Hand prof, instead of splitting up my points between that and throwing.

Also, when I first started playing I didn't see any kind of upkeep taken from me.  Is there some kind of "wait" period before that all kicks in?  I know it's random, but I saw it every round last night and figured either it doesn't kick in until a few days in OR I've just been getting lucky.  It's a clever mechanic; once I saw how much my Espada Slavadona (spelling?) ran me to fix, I decided I was sticking with the mace.

Thanks agian!

If you are gen 1 under lvl 25 I believe there is no upkeep. Its to encourage new players to get the hang of the game before the harsh reality of repairing your armor and weapons kicks in :)

It also starts if you ever use the respec option.

Didn't use to be like this, but many people abused it and kept respecing so they didn't have to pay upkeep and thus earned loads of gold.

Ah yes the respec did it.  No biggie; it'll teach me before I end up using a tonne of gold up on nice stuff.  I know it applies too if you have scavanged stuff and failed to drop it before the round's over, but what if you die with something scavenged?

Scavenged weapons never gave you upkeep. You never got repairs for anything you picked up during a round, only when/if you spawned with it the next round. Although there was a bug with that, so if you didn't have the item yourself, you didn't actually lose any money, even though you got a repair message for it. This is why they made it so you don't spawn with weapons you picked up so this will never happen.

Feel free to loot whatever weapons you find :D
