Title: VKMR: Blade & Soul (release 19. Jan)
Post by: Vibe on July 04, 2012, 09:17:27 am
Vibe ere to bring you another azn mmorpg!

Blade & Soul is a fantasy martial-arts massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) in development by Korean game developer NCsoft and its Team Bloodlust division.
I'm a big fan of MMORPGs that don't have the usual WoW-like combat system - I usually tried to avoid azn mmos for many reasons, but this one really caught my attention. One could say it's like an improved version of TERA (another azn action MMORPG already released in EU/NA).

The game is not yet released in Korea (Open Beta currently). No NA/EU date yet.

Blade & Soul will contain eight playable classes, but only six of those eight have been revealed. Team Bloodlust has revealed the Assassin, Blade Master, Destroyer, Force Master, Summoner, and the Kung-Fu Master to us already. The remaining two have not been announced yet.

It also has different races but they are all human-like.

Some videos of it (all gameplay):
Gliding, flying (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgoJX81skuQ)
Class and combat details (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWozvZjUF9c&feature=iv&lr=1&user=AyinMaiden&src_vid=2c29Nnki7PQ&annotation_id=annotation_354122) (cool video, showcase of each class and it's skills)
PvP system (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzbGYprmAJ4&src_vid=8nCowlblIEk&lr=1&feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_868942) (explains how PvP works in this game)
Some mass faction PvP (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHpx4Alk2IU)
More PvP (kung fu master vs force master) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVEyiBaHetE)
Short PvP vid from Drakedog (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3_VmSiHMC4) (old skool WoW players will know him)
Training system & stats (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nCowlblIEk&src_vid=HWozvZjUF9c&lr=1&feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_563848)
Faction & race background (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rowUzLa5dRE&src_vid=HWozvZjUF9c&lr=1&feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_119457)

Anyway I tested the game a bit (magic). It feels amazing. It plays, looks and feels much better than TERA for me. Graphics are impressive, the landscape looks good, the character attack animations are downright awesome.

The sprint/gliding system is fun to travel/mess around with.

Combat is like TERA - actiony, no target but feels faster overall. The stuff that's better than TERAs combat system is more direct interaction with players/mobs (you can grab  them and shit), you can move/run/jump while you attack, even with channeled skills (TERA locks you in place when you're doing combos), attacks have range so if you step out of range your and enemies attacks will miss so you can use this like a dodge/evade. Left click is for primary combo attack then special keys for special attacks. I tried the Blademaster class and it also had a block skill, which lasts for 2 sec but locks you in place - I think every other class has some similar skill too.

I didn't progress much but it didn't feel very grindy to me (mind you this is the Korean version still!).
I'll post more about it when I go further and test more classes.

Anyway, was really fun playing it and everyone who isn't too bothered by the AZN look should keep an eye out on this one.

How is the leveling in the game? Is it grindy like all other Asian MMO's?

Also is it F2P or P2P?

I'm only level 3 or 4 but it doesn't feel grindy. For Korea it's going to have a subscription, for EU/NA it is not known yet. Most probably it will be NCSoft that takes it over for EU/NA so we can't be sure, they might even make it b2p or f2p. They might also change leveling speed and stuff so it's catered to the west more.

Also there is a main story quest you follow. Some quests are kill/collect x, some are a bit more interesting (in one I had to enter a camp, rescue someone then shoot a canon at a pirate boat).

If you want a MMO with a totally different combat system, try Age of Conan. It's my favourite.

I played AoC quite a lot and it's combat system isn't "totally different"

Looks really bad. Asian-made MMOs usually are though, but then again I think pretty much all MMOs are pretty bad.

I played AoC quite a lot and it's combat system isn't "totally different"

LOL seriously. It's the same as every other typical MMO combat except you have to press like 2 buttons instead of one before it casts. Now DC Universe Online's combat is "totally different." At it's prime (before being diluted and dumbed down for new players) it was as close to Mount & Blade action/reaction/feint you'll get in an MMO. Duels were every bit as intense and player-skill oriented as they are in M&B.

That I agree, played DCUO when it released and really enjoyed PvP. All the block, blockbreaker, knockdown etc etc action was pretty cool. So they dumbed it down?

Yeah. I came back and played it for a couple months when it went F2P and the combat is a shadow of it's former self in terms of depth. You can't really "feint" or draw people into blocking anymore -- blocking and breakout (shift key) in general has been nerfed to hell, as they increased the time it takes for you to block which makes it super easy for people to read it and just use their block breaker. This makes it so that blocking isn't even worth it which encourages spamming and finally leads to who has the best DPS gear. On top of that, the new raid drops absolutely wreck the hell out of people without them, especially people in PvP gear (toughness isn't scaled accordingly at all). They added armor enhancements that give ridiculous amounts of precision (weapon damage) and are only obtained via rare raid drop and only people who spend real life money can craft them. Skill is completely thrown out the window and it's even more glaringly apparent in team fights. People just stack off-healing DPS and focus fire/spam everything to the ground with one guy constantly doing block breaker so there's virtually nothing you can do, even against a team of controllers who are supposed to inherently stomp healers (they can't out dps healers in dps mode and can't offset the heals because they can out heal the control buff, which by the way rarely even applies to the target).

They just came out with the new PvP-centered DLC but I doubt it's any good. Game is dead. It's always had serious inherent game design flaws (like the class balancing system -- complete bullshit and assumes that classes are evenly distributed between the population) and the only good thing it had going was the combat which is now defunct and really only shined in 2v2, legends arena (since it forces everyone to be DPS and you can't really focus fire, thus everything is as even as it gets and it's down to how good the players are at using their character).

Looks real good, mostly because of that awesome flying/gliding system thingy  But spells and skills look real neat, too! Looking forward to playing this when released, dunno if im going to bother when its all korean though >_>

If it's NC Soft West publishing for western world then EU and NA should be coming out close to each other.

I think it's a pretty well done Themepark MMO with a quasi-action combat system. People seem to like the PvP in it, but I doubt it'll be enough to keep me interested.

Someone forgot to check the OP date :D

But yeah I usually post this shit when it comes out in Asia. I think I'm going to try the game again once it's released, but not willing to buy into any beta, just don't feel the hype. What I do like about this one though is that instanced pvp (duels, etc) has balanced gear ala guildwars. It's even played as an esport in Asia, actually.

Which is exactly why im a bit hyped for this one, i loved archeage for what it was, but massive PVE and guilds etc, it just doesnt appeal to me. All i want really is an mmo that can be played mostly solo, and then to get good in pvp.

Watching PvP arena videos has given me more hype for this game. Not really interested in other parts of the game as it's a fairly standard themepark. But when it comes to PvP it seems there's a fair bit of skill involved and since in arena gear doesn't matter, it makes it competitive.

Probably going to roll a Blade Master once the game is out

Early start begins on this Friday, if you have a founders pack. Otherwise it's tuesday for free users. Considering getting an founders pack (cheapest one is 23€) so I can level through the weekend, when I have more time.

Anyway, here's some noob traps advice from reddit:

Don't throw away your level 1 crappy white weapon. (Arena PvP damages your gear, but since stats are standardized/the same for everyone, you can use a lvl 1 weapon to not have to pay so much for repairs)
Don't use the new faction outfit you get early on, it enables PK. But don't throw it away.
Don't drop/sell the purple weapon you're given early on by the NPC (It's your Hongmoon weapon and it's your endgame wep.).
Don't forget to grab professions when you first reach Jadestone Village, you don't have to level them, but the gathering professions would help you gain an extra bits of exp.
Don't use any green weapon upgrade pills to upgrade your weapon, you will regret it, use it very late in the game.
Purple rings and earrings you get from the quest are your Hongmoon accessories, don't throw/sell them away.
Don't forget to do a few of the daily quests (one's with white strips on the blue arrow) which gives you crafting mats and/or heroic stones (black stones with green/red/blue symbols on it)
Don't farm purple dungeons for bopaes/should shields, use the heroic bopaes from trading the above heroic stones instead, until you get your scorpion bopae later.
Don't waste money on bidding for too much in lower level dungeons, it's not worth it.
Treat Unsealing Charms like it's your last triple cheese meatlover pizza, regardless of how many you have in your pocket.
Don't use your Hongmoon Weapon in Arenas, use the crappy white weapon.
Spamming keys to open up chest is fine, but don't overdo it, trade with others if you can (you can't trade purple weapons though). Only use the HM keys if you know what you're doing.
    Don't throw away the Bell.
Don't use XP food when you are at the same level or above the map you're doing quests/grinding.
Repair tools are precious during first few days of a new server, be careful when you repair your weapons.
Don't worry if you picked the 'wrong' faction, you can switch faction later.

Also to note, the most popular (by far) server in the established/veteran BnS community is Windrest. The second most popular will be Ebon Hall. Mind you that dungeon finder and arena has cross-server queue, so it doesn't matter in that regard, but it does matter when it comes to how filled a zone is, so I'm thinking of going to one of the less populated servers (so something that isn't Windrest or Ebon Hall) just so I can level in a zone where not every mob is camped..

Gotta savor the first level up playthrough, made some friends and had a great time when i did in archeage...

I miss archeage. RIP

Getting more and more hyped for this, im probably picking up a founders pack for it. And im suprised how appealing all the classes are, i might actually level alts in this! I dont know much about the servers, so if you pick one and post it here, i might drop in on it aswell with some clannies.

Don't really care about the server, I'm solo atm so you guys feel free to pick one (if you guys can't think of anything then maybe Hao District? list here: http://www.bladeandsoul.com/en/news/launch-guide/). Yeah if you want to see the story and first playthrough how it's meant to be played, don't use that guide. I'm probably still gonna use it because I mostly just care about arena pvp.

Also yeah, a lot of classes seem fun, I'll be making alts as well. It's also a good way to learn other classes to counter them with your main in pvp.

All classes are good! The cool thing about this game is that there's very little rock-paper-scissors when it comes to classes. So just pick a class that suits you thematically.
I'm playing a Blade Master btw.

Started testing out some arena battles today, as expected the first 5 fights were rofl stomps where i won with like 100% hp left, even against higher levels. But i did get like 2 blade masters/dancers that did some parrying which got me pretty smashed, managed to sneak out a victory with 1% and 4% hp in the wins, the other beat me with nearly full hp left. Not sure how to beat perfect parries yet, except for sneaking in instant attacks only.

I'm doing arena dailies, it's good money and xp actually. Have been in like 13 or so fights so far, won 8, lost 5 I think. The first 4 were lost because I was significantly underleveled and even though the gear/level is standardized, a higher level char will resist a fuckton of shit.. not to mention my strictly AoE grinding pve build  Then I went on a 6 win streak, as soon as I got used to fighting in pvp a bit. Currently sitting at 1480 rating I think.

The easiest time I had was vs force masters actually :D do FMs not have a block breaking stun? Were they actually parrying or just blocking?
My bane are Assassins though, jesus. I don't even know what I'm supposed to do about them, massive damage when they're in stealth, I can't seem to hit them and every time I do hit them it seems like they insta counter me with a stun.. I guess I'll need to read a guide about that class.

But there's so much to learn about this games combat (in pvp), I love it. This is what I learned recently, the hierarchy of CC:
Stun > Daze > Knockdown

Stun is the best because classes can only use their TAB skill to get out of it (some classes can spec to get another escape) - the cooldown is 36s. Daze is escaped by either TAB or F (roll back skill), but the cooldown on rollback skill is only 12s, so you can see why stun is better. Knockdown can be escaped even easier, and you have the ability to counter them and instantly get up when you're knocked down. After the opponent has used up all his escapes, it's free game to combo chain the fuck out of them.
For some pro skillz, you need to count the duration of enemies ground counter in your head (I think its 0,8s or a bit longer) so you can stun/daze him right after it. If you wait for the animation it might be too late.

Some character creator goodies :D

The easiest time I had was vs force masters actually :D do FMs not have a block breaking stun? Were they actually parrying or just blocking?
My bane are Assassins though, jesus. I don't even know what I'm supposed to do about them, massive damage when they're in stealth, I can't seem to hit them and every time I do hit them it seems like they insta counter me with a stun.. I guess I'll need to read a guide about that class.

You need to respecc for stuff like that, and people wont do that in early rankings. FM requires a bit defensive play, and people probably dont even bother speccing into stun breaks (i think FM has 2 with good specs) With assassins i think you need to break their stealth with aoe, then not hit during their parry. After that its ez pz allthough i didnt fight one yet.

Too lazy to read the whole thread again. This is being featured everywhere nowadays. Just like everyone else, I am sold for the face creator already. The idea of creating a truly unique face is too good to be true.

So, quick question: What should I expect in a nutshell, if I were to start playing this? How grindy? Any pay-to-winness?

You grind to 45, which isnt that bad. Then depending on if you want to pvp, where you dont need to buy anything or grind anything, or if you want to pve where you may need to play a bit to get the top tier stuff.

The levling itself is quite boring, but the combat makes it bearable, trying out new builds and such. Arena though in later levels is a lot of fun, and very intense.

I hit level 44 now, and ran out of main quests, guess ill get the rest through arena..

Pretty standard themepark MMORPG stuff, to be honest, EXCEPT FOR COMBAT AND PVP, which is really good imo, and makes the other parts of the game worth plowing through.

How grindy?
Slightly less grindy if you're investing some real cash, but other than that not really that grindy. The path to level cap is pretty fast, I'm playing a couple of hours per day since Friday and I'm already level 40 (lvl 45 is max). Dunno about gear grind at max level, but I don't really care about that since I play it for arena pvp, where gear doesn't matter at all.

Any pay-to-winness?
I wouldn't say it's pay2win, they just have a lot of convenience stuff in the cash shop - xp pots, healing food, inventory space, stuff like that.

Blade&Soul: The DMV Simulator

I haven't even played it yet. Currently 1652 in the queue atm. Down from 3900 earlier. Takes forever to try and get in. But I'm non premium. Sucks to be me.

So I just created a character, its on Old Man Cho server- which has 500 premium and 4500 non premium in front of me lol. Is there a way to switch to another server w/o having to delete char and start over?

Yeah the queues are pretty absurd at the moment, the game did launch on Tuesday so it makes sense. It'll drop to very short or no queues in a week or two, guaranteed (unless you're on one of the two most populated servers, Windrest EU or Mushin NA).

EDIT: they also raised server capacity, implemented auto-kick for afk people and are opening new servers https://forums.bladeandsoul.com/topic/150733-new-servers-coming/

Hello friends,

this next image depicts how much effort is needed to win with a destroyer

On the other hand I'm slowly learning how to beat assassin - protip: don't trigger their counter (when they're waving arms) and use aoe when they're in stealth

Muy importante to learn these, so you know when they are popped so you can go ham later.

Alright boys, here's the class breakdown in arena from general opinions of the community (which I share as well):

The EZ mode tier (very effective with little effort):
Destroyers
Lyn Blade Dancers
Summoners

The MID tier (can be very effective with some effort, or in the case of KFM with a lot of effort):
Assassins
Kung Fu Masters

The MEH tier (not that effective even with effort):
Force Masters
Blade Masters

What's important to mention is that extra skills points (coming out at 10th Feb and later more) and later level 50 patch will balance this out a bit more. FMs and BMs are both lacking skill points. The effort required to play a class won't change that much, but the effectiveness/potential will balance out, somewhat.
