Ships would move faster than you can on land, and would be available to build/craft in villages and cities on the coast. Seems like a logical way to transport goods...not sure if you'd want to allow them on rivers (maybe small boats that couldn't carry very many troops or crates).

strategus doesn't need ships
-
Of course they don't need ships. They don't need lots of things...I think it would be pretty cool to have ships, then you could have pirates, trading lanes, etc. Would also be cool for a new strat map (that separated NA from EU with water). They would be costly, but could move faster than over land, and each ship type would have a limited amount of troops and crates it could carry. I'd suggest to keep things simple, no ship vs ship naval battles, but if you initiate a battle from one ship to another, then the battle would basically be both ships lashed together (with one side attacker, one defender) and you board each other's ships.

ok i should have elaborated
strat doesn't need ships, but strat does need a commander system (a guy who's in charge of the battle, potential RTS viewpoint), tweaks to the player recruitment system and a few other things. Ships would be pretty meh compared to other stuff that they could add.

Not gonna lie, I like the ideas of ships. But ships need a working purpose (trading) which needs to be fixed first. Also needs a sea strategy game mode.
All doable, all 'planned', the question is when.

waaaah, pls give us an rts commander thingy first .. may as well refine the features you've put in already before new features are put in
-
Rts commanding system + Ships = Awesomness.
I guess ships would need a new world map, since the one we've got now has really no sea... Atleast no useful sea.
I could only imagine, how epic it would be, to be a pirate  When a battle between ships goes on, the map is being set to a ship abordage or so :P
Strat needs so many fixes and new features.

Questions
- Bought?
- Crafted?
- Can it move on its own or does it need the ownership character inside?
- 1 type of ship or more? (Fast pirate ships! :D)
Ownership/Control
- Who ever has ownership of the ship can control it, as with current fief ownerships.
Function
- Make the ships function as characters does. Copy what a character is and call it a ship.
- Put a limit on how many troops can be in - depends on type of ship built if more than 1 type would be available.
- Put a cap on max movement speed.
- Weight system function double of mounted values.
Ship battles
- Normal battle system
- Make several ship maps with walk-boards connecting the ship(s).

I think you should have to craft them, but it would be cool if some of the craftable items in game actually allowed you to collect the resources for building something larger. I think it should need the "ownership" character inside and would be treated somewhat like a fief and somewhat like a person moving on the map. The person who "owns' the ship, would need to enter the ship, and then they move around the water the same way they would move their character on land. You would be able to transfer ownership over the ship.
And I agree with the battles, to keep it simple I'd say no naval battles, just have a few different types of "ship" maps where the ships are "tied" together and you can board the other ship. Having siege equipment for boarding enemy ships and defending your ships would be pretty crucial. You could also make it like current fiefs where you can construct things on the ship to make it more useful.
I'd also suggest at least 2, maybe more types of ships. Fast/mobile ships that can carry a decent amount of troops, but not a lot of cargo. Larger caravan ships that can carry lots of troops and goods. I think the larger ships would be slower, but allow you to carry more troops, so pirates would need to have better tactics and equipment to really take over a large ship.
I think there's a lot of potential, but the map would need to either be changed, or you'd need to make it so that calradia is more of an island with water on all sides. This is just my opinion of course, I'm sure brainstorming would be good if this was ever implemented.

How about implementing kind of the editor to the ships later?
Like, you would have two points at the beginning of crafting a ship, which would be the connections between the boats (when battling).
Make for example 5 basic shapes of the boats, and then make them a little bit customizable :P
It needs alot of work, and it's really a futuristic idea, but why not?

I know Brytenwalda has some Battle Navy maps they used in their mod

The most important question is: Can we choose the colour of the ship?
I want the Blueman to take his Bluemen into a Blue ship and sail on the Blue sea while playing Blues.
But YAY! Good thing that ships will be added sometime :D

(trading) which needs to be fixed first.
Any chance of some elaboration? At least as far as what part of trading needs fixing. I've been saying that the distance bonuses need changing for ages and i'm hoping that this is what you are talking about :D

ok if you did it like that it doesn't sound like it'd be all that 'hard' ... custom ship maps (already have them in crpg) ... different model for ships with a limit of like 200 tickets per ship ... ships go in your inventory like horses ... 1 ship max per player ... when take to oceans gives you a new model; ship instead of person ... could work but map would need a whole new restart ...
