I am finally determined to learn this manual blocking business. Planning out my character, what is probably the better road to go, strength or agility? I have almost no experience with two handed weapons.
Any suggestions?

Str build gets you more HP, Agi Build Gets you quicker foot work. You tell us what you prefer?

If you don't know which you want then either go 21/18 or 18/21. It's balanced and doesn't really make a big difference. If you want to deal 8% more damage then you go 21/18, if you want slightly more mobility then go 18/21.

It will make it a bit harder for me to couch lance you if you have 7 athletics ;)

Level to 18/18 first, then see if you are fine with your movement speed, then go 18/21 or 21/18 accordingly. I would go 21/18 because great mauls are hilarious.

If I was ever a pure 2h or polearm user, I'd go more str than agility. 5 athletics is just fine, so all you need is 15 agility. I'd go 24/15 and hit hard and still be able to move around the battlefield. Not to mention if you put points into WM you'll be swinging fast as well.

I'd do this.
I've tried 18/21 and 21/18, both are good and balance.
You dont know how much speed is enough until you try it and find you have enough or need more.
My final build is 21/21 though :) Lvl 32 of course (almost there)

24/15 is best for damage not 21/18.
18/21 or 21/18 are not that great imho.

Nah, Vexus doesn't know anything.
24/15 is a very good build, but you are not so mobile.

5 athletics is fine for melee infantry. You're better off having 7 or 8 PS and 5 athletics, than 6 or 7 PS and 6 athletics.

Between 5 and 6 athletics you won't see any difference as I'm 100% sure you won't be using light armour as melee so might as well get more health and damage if your aiming for having more strength than agility.
18/21 21/18 is like a slightly upgraded version of the 18/18 balance build than a real agi build vs strength build.

You can say the speed difference between 21/18 and 24/15 is small but I could say the same about the damage output. The thing I like about 21/18 is that most melee on the NA servers are 24/15, and being 21/18 I can run away from most of them if I need to reposition. Even though 21/18 is only slightly faster than 24/15, it is all you need to get away from most people as long as you wear light-medium to medium armor.
The choice of builds between 24/15, 21/18, 18/21 just comes down to personal preference and choice of weapons. They all have their drawbacks and advantages.

How do you block those pole stabs that like swing a quarter circle? My guy is low level and doesn't have great armor and those things just 1 shot me. I try blocking down but it doesn't seem to work?

No matter how much a person spins around, the block direction is still the same. So down block should work just fine. My strategy vs. most 2 direction polearms is to just hold down block and wait for the block noise. Since their upswings are slow and obvious it is easy to switch your block if needed. Only thing to be careful about with this strategy is kicks but not too many players are very good at kicking.
If you are sure you are holding block and they are hitting you with thrusts, then it might be because they have gotten to your side or around you. Try to keep them at the center of your screen when you are blocking.
