Is there any reason that I cant change my main character at will? Even if I delete my main, I still cant make an alt a main. Why is this, and is there any chance of this being changed in the future?

Nope, it is meant to be like that and has always been like that. If you are new and just deleted your old main char (and if your characters arent too old), there's a chance that Meow can help you.
If not, you have to create a new character to make it your main.

All my guy are Gen 1. But is there a reason for it to be that way?

Yes, there is a reason.

It's easier that way. People can't switch around their characters easily for Strategus, but instead have to develop their main character separately.

If you're only Gen 1, then it doesn't really matter anyways. Loom up the item you want for your Gen 2 character. Or trade it away for gold and buy your first loom, whatevs.
