Title: Next BWE Friday, June 8th
Post by: SeQuel on May 29, 2012, 09:51:28 am
http://www.arena.net/blog/announcing-the-next-guild-wars-2-beta-weekend

"Your existing beta characters have not been deleted, and you will be able to continue right where you left off! This means that enterprising players with characters level 35 or higher will be able to test their mettle against the explorable version of the Ascalonian Catacombs dungeon!"

"We have listened intently to all of your feedback from our first Beta Weekend Event, and we’ve made great strides toward resolving many of the issues you’ve helped us identify. These include party movement into overflow servers, chat functionality, key bindings, server stability, performance, and many more that we will detail in the near future."

Everyone REJOICE!

Hope the performance fix is noticable, but still, good stuff... can't wait for it, haven't decided on a class yet, so lots of testing still needed!

Huzzah, finally performance.

I'm glad they delayed last months beta to this month just to fix big bugs, that is perfectly fine by me.

"One of the coolest things that we’ve added to WvW recently is a persistent mini-dungeon that can be accessed through the three keeps in the center map. This area is designed with multiplayer PvP in mind and players can do things like activate the traps in the mini-dungeon to defeat enemy players. Of course, at the end of the area there’s a chest full of rewards.

We also have some exciting plans for WvW post-launch, but of course we don’t want to talk about our post-launch plans until after we ship the game and have had some time to implement things."

Seems there will be even more to WvW later :)

If anyone played a Guardian in last BWE he probably found out that Guardian's ranged abilities are close to null.. anyway they apparently changed scepter skills and that should be the new ranged option for Guardian.

So, how was everyones BWE2?

It felt like they improved performance (atleast for me), didn't get any bad fps anymore, it was pretty lagless as well. Had loads of fun testing different classes.

I enjoyed alot, while I don't want to do any lots of beta's anymore since I hate getting all my progress halted and or removed after a few days. I want to just play in peace :P

No FPS problems for me, seems stable.  I only played for an hour or so though.

FPS was not a problem for me unless I went into WvWvW and followed around the Zerg. When they get this game fully optimized it's gonna be awesome.

Game was fun, got a theif up to level 23, and a necromancer up to 8.

WvWvW for me is kinda being ruined since my Server is roflstomping literally every server in it's path. (Playing on Crystal Desert).

Yeah, the WvW was never balanced when I was playing. There was 1 dominant team that seemed to have a ridiculous number of people, crushing anything they came across with zerg-power. At the end of the last day, they made like 25-50 siege golems and cut through the gates of any forts we had like butter...

However, I was able to organize some our team for a bit to beat back the zerg. The key was to defend a fort using lots of siege equipment, as well as having people down on the ground fighting to act as a buffer to keep the enemy away from the walls. We were able to destroy much larger enemy forces quickly and easily like this. It was a lot of fun crushing a huge army like that so easily, sending the zerg into retreat. :)

It didn't fail until people went off to do other things and allowed us to be overrun (no buffer of people fighting on the ground). It seems quite easy in many forts for an enemy elementalist to just drop an AoE on the walls, killing the seige equipment operators and destroying the equipment itself. And you can't place arrow carts or ballistas farther back on the wall, since the arrow carts require you to be able to see and click on the ground you want to attack, and the ballista needs a clear field of view. In fact, the ballistas needed to be place right up on the wall's edge to avoid being blocked the lip of the wall (which would leave you unable to shoot anything except very distant targets). So you need to have a decent army of allies fighting on the ground.

I wish there was another day to play because I would have tried to organize some recon so that we could know when the enemy army was coming so that we could get back defend with sufficient numbers. There's limited waypoints to respawn at, so it shouldn't be hard to have some people keep an eye on the routes an enemy army would come from, especially on your home map.

Apparently, money is supposed to get easier to obtain as you level higher, so blueprints may seem cheaper and cheaper. Once money isn't a concern, supply may be the main factor. I only saw a supply camp empty once, and it was while we were rushing to build siege equipment to defend a local fort. But if blueprints become even more affordable, forts may routinely become well defended with equipment that you need more than just a ram to attack, and you may even see equipment being built during pitched field battles.

I think the servers are going to be a bit more balanced come release, if not they should introduce some extra rewards (like extra glory earned) for server with low pop.

They set a algorithm in place to match up good servers vs other good servers unfortunately it didn't work as they planned for the first 2 days and I'm pretty sure the restart of WvWvW sunday morning was the only time it worked which I noticed as we got paired with other servers that were raping their previous rounds.

Anywho they said they're still toning it up.

Hey, thats my server I missed that darn. Didn't look like 100 but very cool none of the less.

I got a Golem Blueprint from the jump puzzle in WvWvW and created it at the start of a siege, it was very cool, everyone near me all wanted to try and I felt popular for a moment. After we took the city it became very useless unless like showed above you work together with coordination but I was only following a zerg and they practically cleaned everything up and took down the next castle gate before I even got there so I just hopped out and let people test it out to see what it was like.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/9660001/golem02.jpg I was in the golem my friend took the screenshot.

Hey, thats my server I missed that darn

NH & our mother guild PURGE is on Crystal Desert.  I forget if we have some friends/associates in TL guild or not.

We absolutely STOMPED 2 other servers that were 5-1 in BWE1, mostly because I dont think they had a clue how to use siege equipment effectively.  NH was able to hold several encampments and small towers against OVERWHELMING ODDS with 2 ballista & arrow cart.  Ballista is so much fun vs dumb attackers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGm6bq5qsss   (Not my video, but basically what NH did all weekend)
6:30 mark is when things get just downright LULZ, enemy is clumped up and keeps trying to rez.

Wasnt ME in the video.  I was saying we basically did the same thing ALL weekend.

BTW if you didnt know, ballista shots are PENETRATING, meaning they will hit everything in a line.  Its just great against a wave of attackers rushing your position, hit'em with shatter bolt then #3 siege shot to finish.

Title: Re: Next BWE Friday, June 8th
Post by: Slamz on June 14, 2012, 02:24:30 am
Yeah, arrow carts are all the rage because you can place them on top of a wall where nobody can hit it and rain down arrows but for open field fighting, the ballista is far superior.  Way more damage per hit, way more DPS, extra-special-awesome if you can catch people in a tunnel or doorway where they have to come at you in blob/line.  Their only weakness is that they require a target and direct line of sight to it, which limits where you can place them.

I didn't get to fight a single ballista this whole weekend, though.  People just haven't caught on to their value.

We would capture a supply depot and then have some people stay back guarding it with ballistas and were massacuring hordes of enemies that way.  They have to either build a trebuchet to destroy your ballistas from long range or else overwhelm you by like 5 to 1 odds.  I really like that in this game "zerg + 1" does not beat "zerg".  It's more about siege engines (and supply) than it is about pure numbers.  "Zerg with 4 ballistas" beats "Zerg x2", no question about it (Zerg w/ 4 ballistas vs Zerg x2 with catapults and it might get interesting).

BWE2 showed good improvement in terms of bugs, framerate and balance but was lame for WvW because their matching system blew it.  Each day it was us vs 1 pretty good server and 1 brand new server.  The brand new servers were totally useless and the "pretty good" servers couldn't contain us 1v1, so it was pure roflstomps.  (Although really "yawnstomps" is a better term because after rolling them, there was very little to do.)

Yah...the last day was the only decent fight as they always had like 1-2 fortresses but the rest of the days we literally had EVERYTHING capped 24/7.

I actually 90% enjoyed small scale battles with 5v5 or 10v10 and so on in WvW.
