Every now and then someone joins a game and says blah blah blah welcome the lord of this place. How is this achieved? Also, are there any benifits to being the owner of some form of fief?

A fief owner is obviously... A person that owns a feif on Strategus
A fief being a castle, town or village on strategus.
Its only a name.

so there are no rewards that come with it? I thought I heard that you get a bonus xp/gold but I could be wrong.

You can charge taxes for strat gold for people who stay in your fief and you can convern strat gold to CRPG gold at a 1:10 ratio. There are no direct benefits to being a fief owner playing normal CRPG other then the pink text.

I don't think it got removed so much as it never worked. I think it always just ate your money.

How long has it been since you've actually played Strategus and did you ever try being a trader, bandit, etc? If your clan quit Strategus en masse in the fall and you're still complaining about it, what's the point?
It's just a casual browser game that's kept a lot of people interested in cRPG longer than they would have been if it was just battle/siege servers. I think if those other mods, Fire & Sword and Napoleonic Wars, would've had some kind of similar campaign map element that gave battles a purpose they might have maintained cRPG size populations too. The WFAS weapons would've fit really well in a Caribbean pirate style strategus game and if NW had a map of Europe strat style game that would've been awesome.
