And why the heck does almost everybody here play it?
I feel SO uninformed right now xD So I wiki'd it and I'm still pretty lost how people from Darkfall play MnB
Brought this up because I see questions to the BkS crew if they're "the same people from Darkfall" all the time, and it confuses meh.
For the most part, I like a couple of the BkS guys, and then there are they really abrasive ones. I'd like see them in Strat when it comes up! It'll be cool!
Clearly I had a point when I made this thread. I think it was something to do about "What's Darkfall"
-
i was wondering about this as well. It seems like everyone in team speak has played the game as well.
I say fuck darkfall, it can go burn.
-
An overrated MMORPG.

afaik its where married men go to have gay secks

Darkfall is for all of those people who....

DARKFAIL is a game with a long grind scripted characters raising stats doing stuff like swimming into a wall to raise stats/skills (I have seen all sorts of cheating there)
Graphically the world kinda interacts like a free roam m and b battle with castles small village
U fight.kinda twitch based but completely OP magic that requires an amazing gold and time grind(the time part was usually scripted as well)
All sorts.of cheats related.to server boundaries(@duping, never knew how to do it)
I was brought in by my big bro "Nox"(a true legend of internet game development) to run a kingdom he had usurped(I was always the diplomatic/leadership type)
It was cool leading armies to take castles, by end of beta I controlled like three major castles and numerous hamlets, game turned to pay per month I left(Nox left much earlier)

I was fallowing Darkfall's development back in the days, and was really looking forward to play it. But the launch was one giant fail.
Yes, yes, lots of games had a rough start, and then came back on their feet. But Darkfall team was deliberately misinforming potential customers, and only about 1/3 of the stated features were implemented on start. Darkfall on release was like a paralyzed dog, just crawling pitifully on its front feet. And still does. Meah... Just read their official forum. You will get the idea, he-he.
-
Oh yea u gain skills by doing, so block.an attack slowly gain block skill
And stats raise by associated skills, so like mine a rock raises mining and strength
I guess it wouldn't take alot of imagination to see why scripting/macroing were so popular, I got some of the population in my kingdom banned(anyone I saw cheating I /admin)
When I get off work I can post screenshots

Darkfall is a Sandbox MMORPG. Basically it adds in skills with the combat. Instead of just being able to swing you could set it up so when you change weapons it will do a whirling attack as well. Also, in Darkfall you have to grind for months building your skills to be able to compete. There is magic in this game, which makes it less fun imo. People just spam their heals and nukes all the time. That is why I left the game. At least in M&B there is only archery lol.
Another important aspect in Darkfall is that it is a lot like Strat, but in real time. People can always come in and attack you unannounced, so you better have people there to protect your guilds town stone. (They cannot take your city without going to war with you). Overall, the game was very fun when it came out 2 years ago, but after about 6 months it got bland with all the macroers and max stat players transferring to the North American server (Which started after the European sever), so they had the advantage of almost twice as much HP. It takes months to macro up those stats, so it made the field less even.
Hopefully, this clears it up a little.

Darkfall is dead. Stop bringing it up.

The game was GREAT at the beginning when it was just melee/archery. Groups of 5-8 would just roam the open world looking for pvp. But then people started finding out that the aoe nukes do just as much dmg and even more than archery. Those groups were no longer roaming but sitting in their cities with guard towers "Macroing" their characters in the hopes of one day possibly being able to be as good as the original melee/archers. Well, by the time people started coming back out of their cities(now in groups of 10+ for safety) the small group pvpers had already left the game.
Then came the "alliances." The scared players (like ranged players in cRPG. lol j/k but srsly) that invested so much time in their chars now wanted to protect the cities they were macroing in so they began allying up with anyone they could to create "zergs" of players that would come to the cities defense incase someone would seige them. This then forced the smaller clans that were still playing the game to "ally" up as well in order to have any sort of competitive pvp. Again, this led to just stale pvp that only happend when one alliance would seige another so it was huge 80v80 battles that lagged the server to shit and became a slideshow of action. More an more people slowly quit the game when they saw the attitudes of these "hardcore" players that were too scared to lose a fight/city.
Darkfall could have been an amazing game if it were not for the balance issues and the general population being scared at all times. It is still the only game that had my adrenaline pumping every fight. If you died the guy who killed you could loot EVERYTHING you had and keep it for himself. You could attack anyone at anytime you pleased. But with the whinning of players the devs added guard towers to every hamlet/city(that made it impossible to sneak around and fight outnumbered) so that the scared players can continue to sit in their cities in peace.
p.s. Archery in Darkfall was more FPS like than Warband and because of that there was a huge skill-cap for the archery user in the beginning, but again, because of the aoe magic being easier to hit(skill-less) and doing more damage archery was left behind and it all went downhill from there.
That was Darkfall

As someone that sold their char for over 2000$ USD I can tell you Darkfall was a super fucking awesome mmorpg in it's first 6 months. It progressively got worse as time went along. Today it's no where near the same game as it when it started. It was a first person mmorpg that had a 3rd person view like that of M&B. It was skill based not level based. Clans could capture and build up hamlets and cities. It was a game of alliances, spies, massive wars, open pvp, full loot, and on place was safe! To be out with like 2 hours worth of decent loot then you get jumped it was an the cheapest high you can get, aaahhhh adrenaline my friend. That made it physically addictive for me.
I remember one day when we crashed the server with a few different massive wars going on. There was about 700 people fighting just on our side not sure how many we were fighting but it was alot. But on the other side of the world about 1000-1300 more people were fighting their own war.
If only the Devs at Aventurine played their own game and didn't give in to the minority (bitchy lil kids with too much time that only spend their time posting on the forums and whining) it would still be a great game. Too bad they caved into the minority and screwed it up. I feel DF had the most potential of any mmorpg since Ulitma Online back in 1997-99.
Aventurine, The company that made it was from Greece and they start developing it 03' it wasn't launched till what early '09 if my memory is right? It was called vapor ware for many years. Anyway it's so dead there now. I am pretty sure Aventurine is still in massive dept. I think they deserve it though they fucked up what coulda been the best mmorpg to have existed since UO or say Dark Age of Camelot.
What happened DF is almost exactly what on a smaller scale happened to crpg(b/c crpg has smaller player base). chadz, who is awesome btw and I appreciate all that he does, made a retirement system that me and other people tried to tell him from about 3 weeks after he made that it would eventually break the game. He took too long to come up with his next BIG patch. People had already invested alot of time in to the game only to have their chars nerf'd badly. Many people left and you will never see them again. They still love the game and a few play native. Most are so pissed and have so little faith that chadz can even keep the game from being broken that they will never return to crpg :(
Also alot of people feel that once chadz thinks his system is favoring grinders, aka people that love his game and play it alot, he will just do something to screw them over. Whether it's resetting gens or taking away 1/3 of your looms again not really sure but it's bound to happen watch. Anyway I am going off on a comparison tangent sorry.
DF does have 14 day trail going right but I think you will find the game to boring and the world way to big too be so empty. I think so many play M&B b/c they wish DF melee had this system.

The game was GREAT at the beginning when it was just melee/archery. Groups of 5-8 would just roam the open world looking for pvp.
5-8 really I remember I started in April and we went out in studded with R20 weapons like 20-30 deep hitting up player cities all day long.
-
Good synopsis of the game, me and nox both felt it had the most potential since early UO(before the multiple ways they raped the ability to kill other players) then for a moment we thought mortal online was(but that's another story)
original UO beta and early release was still my favorite of all MMORPGs, lose everything when u die to whomever.picks your corpse, or hell kill a guy take keys to his house and rob that too, or cut his body into pieces lol
It actually was not the first or last MMORPG I beta(or alpha ) but it was one of the only ones I paid anything for after beta
You know in beta Everquest had non consent pvp....
From my 20 plus years online(from Tradewars early BBS games) to the latest betas....
The biggest problem imo is devs listening to whiners for how they should make their game
It never fails that giving in ruins your game, One of the first ever true MMORPGs Dark Sun Online:Crimson Sands was completely ruined by a whine induced quick fix(my name was Goliath if anyone played this back in early nineties, such a legend now in Dark Sun all halfgiants are now called Goliaths)

You may or may not have been in a zerg clan. Just sayin.
-
Yea Felagunda, on EU I started Cryptic with friends then we merged with Serenity Now my name was Search Forit. Then I rerolled to NA and played with a clan so I could level my char up in peace, then went and tried out for BkS cuz they were small scale pvpers(I beat Rhade in my tryout duel btw :P) Was named Search Far. We always rolled with whoever was online(usually 5-8 as mentioned earlier) but before magic this was enough to take out anyone. We would hold down cities and fight off huge groups by just being better. That was all ruined when anyone could get 50 in a magic school and lob nuclear bombs around the battlefield and 3 shot anyone.

Darkfall had a lot of potential and great ideas but failed to deliver. In my opinion some things they needed in place at release were a skill/stat cap, balanced magic system, physics (who didn't get tired of guys running in circles), and a more accessible UI. The game is too far along to make any sweeping changes or they risk losing the remaining player base. Aventurine is all in on this sinking ship which is unfortunate because if they developed another similar MMO they would know what works and what doesn't.

Definatly was at that time :P

They needed to fix the duping bug sooner and then they needed a totally whipe of items by the end of April. I mean the Mercs duped and made a vile forge in the first 2 months of the game and AFIAK another wasn't made 1 year and 3 months later on NA or EU b/c it cost to much and wasn't worth it. They dupped up their skills so sad :( . Korvos had 50 mil on NA guess it pays to know the right guy :( BTW I was in his guild he never farmed untill they found out how to bug out the Devil's and he had his wealth way before that.
My point is alot of people left because of that and that fact that they took to long to do anything. They wanted to realease most of the patches in huge updates that just broke/unbalanced the game even worse. They kept doing that without fixing things that had been around since day one that was messed up. Sound familure?

Bolded for emphasis, but Darkfall was a great game with a lot of potential.
Early NA was some of the most fun I've ever had gaming, and our core of players went through so much together and it was the first time I saw what a clan really should be. /emotional

That is kinda sad. Sad that is no more. Sad that it took you that long to experience that. Have you played many mmorpgs? If so which ones?

Darkfall was epic in it's "prime" which was the first few months when the server was full of players. I made a few Youtube videos which have garnished a decent amount of hits on the topic, ill post a few here if your still looking to get an idea on the game. Again great game, but it needs improvements and if improved could be the best mmorpg ever. I'm still waiting on elemental arrows for archers, portals scattered all around the world, and Bindestones and Banks on boats so there can be roaming pirate clans on water. :)

Darkfall was a game with fantastic potential and lofty aspirations that did a belly flop. It was fun for awhile early, but the touted "player skill" emphasis ultimately just turned into who could grind their character the longest and the fastest, which turned into scripts and bots and cities that were crowded yet devoid of actual players.
Picture crpg where the level cap was removed and you might get a general idea. Character disparity ran amok, which really reduced the 'player skill' factor imo.
-
don't listen to what people say, just download the free trial and try it yourself. its DEFINATELY not for everyone.
darkfall was also prolly the most fun i've had in a computer game. its a love/hate relationship though. even though theres many things that suck about DF there is still no other computer game like it, nobody can deny it that.
although my clan has already started playing again (nomads). Im waiting for new expac which will hopefully rekindle my interest.
In my opinion some things they needed in place at release were a skill/stat cap, balanced magic system, physics
Be fair at least it actually had a physics system, even if was a dated one. no other mmo even trys to emulate physics. I've only game I ever seen it in FPS games.

Darkfall was really fun at the birth of the NA server. Only the most intelligent players (those who knew how to use their resources to their full advantage), and the most skilled players were able to thrive in that era. Those were probably some of the most entertaining times I had in online gaming.
However, the game was a grindfest and everyone knew it. Those with the most grinded up characters were able to beat players ten times better than them because they could spam large AoE magic spells that took no skill to land. The real problem with that game was the grind.
To give you an idea, I permanently quit the game the day that I decided to grind up one of my magic schools (everyone had far out-grinded me at that point, as I had quit multiple times because of various gameplay flaws). It took me three hours to get "Lightning Magic" from 89-90 and "Lightning Ball" from 69-70. Keep in mind that there are eight magic schools in that game with about twenty spells each.
-
Also the actual gold to grind a mage was epic, I.e. really u had to be a clan to really have powerful mages, the Queen of Freehold was such a mage and it was like for a mage ur a God. Compared to any other player who is about as effective as a NPC vs U
-
Magic wasn't that bad to grind I have over 35 good surging and that was before they made it goe up what was 2x or 4x faster if done on mobs? Before the end I had all intensfy at 100 and about 80 surging spells. Who surges a beacon I will tell you who does me!
-
Darkfall was fun for the first 3 or 4 months when everyone was equal and huge wars were fought. After that it slowly went down hill. I thought the opening of the NA server would jolt things up for people to start playing again. Unfortunately the known exploits were launched with the NA server so certain guilds started up new characters on NA and just exploited tons of gold and wealth undisturbed.
The transfers from EU to NA were given nothing but their characters. So you either joined with one of the NA powers that were already established or failed at trying to make a new force since everyone already had way the fuck ton more than you. I tried to do the second option and it did not work at all.
Part of being good at Darkfall was also knowing a good programmer to make you some really good AFK macroing programs. I had people go into other guilds and steal these programs since I didn't have time to figure out how to make them myself.
Real life took over as I started working way the fuck more and Darkfall became more of a game that seemed impossible to keep up with. Darkfall rewards people that do nothing but play it. You will never rise above them so do not even bother trying to play Darkfall casually.

Oh yeah I forgot about the various exploits. The exploit that really bothered me was the acid pool exploit because it created huge pvp imbalances so early in the game. Some beta testers knew full well about it but decided they wouldn't report it so they could abuse it for their own gain. It was clear early game who exploited this bug because you literally couldn't kill these guys in pvp without 3-4x numbers. People's defense was "well you will eventually catch up to them" but in reality you won't because those are the guys who will do anything to max their characters. It's almost a metagame of who can find the next exploit to gain an edge over everyone else.
Oh and another negative aspect of this game, the community. It literally has the worst community of any game ever created. If you want to surround yourself with degenerates then darkfall is the place.

This. Had a blast roamin with Rhade and Van in the beta and EU1 launch period, pre-magic fuck all bullshit aoe spam craptastic letdown etc etc. 2am raiding groups of house burning trolololing and whatnot. Good times.
Biggest killer of the game for me, aside from the stupid shit mentioned already (craptastic UI/Chat/Trade/Blah blah) was the fact that during beta they kept referencing an oblivion/M&B-esque melee system. What they gave us was CS-style LMB spam knifing melee with a nigh-worthless block mechanic. After the grind bullshit for magic and stats hit big from the carebear zap-tower hiding macro bitches, with a shitty melee system to play with I just flat out lost any interest and went back to playing M&B until Warband came out.
DarkFail- So much potential and broken promises delivering a grindtastic macro-based aoe-fest.

the funniest thing is I had never registered a forum account the entire time I played that game, I was doing some internet searches about darkfall(google searches on my smartphone) and one of the first things was a forum of with one guy(it was SA forums but I wouldn't hold it agianst all of them) lamenting about not having access to something called "Mavric's PVP Script", this is exactly what I was always wondering if that could be true there really were ways to bot you're entire fighting or at least a good deal of it, if it is true it's fucking sad

Yup, the macro'ing was 80% of DarkFail in the end. Especially once magic became the de-facto PvP skillset. At first it was aoe cycling, press 1 key and you would cycle your nukes + blinds. Also weapon swapping whirlwind exploit (dunno if they ever fixed it) where instead of waiting for the cooldown each weapon type's whirlwind ability could be machine gunned right after each other for jousting hits as you ran past an opponent. Then there was the buff to ray spells where you could macro it to launch all of your rays in one keypress to machinegun them into a target (prefferably CC'd) in order to burst them down insanely fast.
DarkFail: Macro'ing skills > all

The game looks cool but I suppose it has to.. You know.. To reel you in.
All of the bad comments reminds me of when I first asked native players if cRPG was good. They said it was the worst thing they had ever played, and that it took no skill for a plate spamming tin can with a poleaxe to wipe out an entire team. I found this to be not true, and among other things, this is my favorite game+mod of all time (600+ hours cRPG). Thank you native players, for being such assholes against such a great mod.
Back on topic the game looks cool, but there is no way I'd ever pay for that.
-
I never had any beef with Darkfall myself.
Started in EU1 when it was just one server period (even though I'm an NA player), and played during the good days before things got crappy. Never had any regrets.
Though going along with what Gorath said...
It's a shame that no MMO developer has the balls to copy and paste M&B style combat.
Seriously...they need to end this left click knife spam crap, and just rip off this game for an MMO.
-
Darkfall rewards people that do nothing but play it. You will never rise above them so do not even bother trying to play Darkfall casually.
with the new attribute meditation which came out yesterday, and much faster skill ups. I dont think thats true at all anymore.
-
Darkfall is one of those games that most people can't handle the hardcore nature of it. So what happens is they get humiliated and get frustrated then they became lifetime haters. There is a 14 day trial and the game is gonna be re-released before the end of the year with plenty of upgrades. If you enjoy hardcore ffa pvp and want a great rush check it out imo. Just my 2 cents.
-
So are the devs making an effort to improve this game?
I might just give it a try
