Title: Maps not Saving?
Post by: RipperX on March 21, 2011, 09:26:23 am
Hi Guys,

I'm a bit pissed, first day with everything, the system works great thanks to Kong Ming's great guide,  I figured out how to build terrain and learn the basics of the map and system, objects etc.  I tried about 4-5 maps for a few hours before I finally started my first "official" map.  So long story short, I have been working on it for about 7 hours now, added tons of stuff, from what it says in the editor, if you press "ctrl-e" to exit out of the mode, it will ask you to save.

I saved my map about 50-60 times over the past 7 hours, so for the first time I "quit the game" to take a break, I go back, my map is gone, completely reset, nothing but terrain.  I don't even want to attempt another map if this is going to happen, such a gut wrenching feeling loosing 7 hours of work.  Anyways, maybe I'm doing something wrong, if anyone knows how to retrieve the map, or has any more details on saving your final work that would be great.  Thanks.

**NOTE** Just to clarify, I took all the steps listed in the tutorial, got my Terrain checked, copy and pasted the code into Scenes.txt, then in Strings.txt I customized the name of the map as well instead of "My_Scene_1 etc.  I loaded Warband with my custom Module, loaded a multiplayer game, hosted the game and loaded in the new Terrain, everything looks and feels great.  So I did this again, added 5 trees, then ***Saved CTRL-E and Exited**  I load the same map back up which is the map I'm currently testing with basic terrain and 5 trees, THE TREES WERE GONE.  What am I doing wrong, why won't the bloody map save my actions? AM I not compiling something here?  I read 2 different tutorials, and even read the help in the editor multiple times, all it says is "pressing ctrl-e" will allow you to save, but it doesn't and I start off with a blank terrain again.

So my main question, how do you officially compile a scene? and then get the .sco file?  For example my map was called "Awesome_Forest" its saved in my scenes.txt and strings.txt as "Awesome_Forest" and when I load it in a multiplayer game it comes up as "Awesome_Forest" yet the second I quit Warband and restart, everything is gone and it's back to my original Terrain.  Just really frusterated, haven't heard anyone else having this problem, hoping it's just a basic thing, sigh...

Please help, thanks.

I've actually had the exact same problem. From scouring this section of the forums, it appears that it's some sort of inherent problem that occasionally occurs with using the quick and easy module copy and paste method.

There is always the possibility of your sco file still being around... check the scnobjectives folder for it

Would the .sco file be the name of my map ie. "Awesome Forest" or would it be under a default name.  I'm just surprised how big of a problem this is, yet not many others have had it. All I want to do is make a cool map and actually be able to play it again without total fear of loosing it. Right now I've made multiple new terrains and "Nothing" has been saving. Sigh...

Just for the record, my original Terrains are saved, but nothing else is.

Just use the proper method off mapping using the module system to create your scene, everything is better that way

Well like even Crpg has 100 blank map files in it... I still used the custom scene making mod to start, but crpg works just as well. Your problem sounds like mismatching files... like you overwrote something that was set in stone. For example you can't start up a native map wipe all the objects clear and resave it... or at least when i've tried this it just goes back to default later on

Leiknir,

I followed Kong Ming's steps to the tee.  What would a proper Module system be?  Like a different way to edit maps then inside the Warband editor?

Thank you, I'll work on getting this method up and running.

Maybe there's a filesystem rights problem and you can't overwrite the blank scene files?

Already having problems with the Module System and Python.  I did everything listed, went into environmental variables, changed what needed to be changed and the Module system isn't working, FD*#%@&*%@#EWHEFGU%@#*%#@&%^@NFE*%@*&%@&!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Zag, I wonder if there is a way to change that in my system files?  I'm running Win 7 64bit.

Well I made it past the Python step, the problem was my UAC was enabled, I disabled it and now the modules system works.  Hopefully I can get this going now!

Well, my first map is finished.  It is called Magic Forest, I'm just waiting on the M&B Repository to approve my upload status.  I'll post a few screenshots below.

Did you wall in the forest?

Nope.  You mean like adding fences, or like an invisible wall?

Im new at this too... I made "phoenix castle" and now am remodeling it due to fps short comings. Not bad for your first map. Its fresh looking but again too many trees or other things and your fps will drop. Ive been looking at mine closely and reworking based on what that tells me. And as for walling in, hes talking about barriers along the perimeter of your map so that people cant escape your map... if u look at mine or some of the more experienced "scene editors" youll notice that red barriers on the outside.. people cant pass through. A lil note though, they are one sided barriers. So one side (red) they can not pass through, the other side (green) they can.

Red light.... Green light!

Yeah you want to put barriers all around the forest edge plus a roof... us crpg players have a tendency to figure out how to be dicks with ladders

Make sure you have walked every inch of this map, especially around the fallen ship. Can people get behind the ship with ladders? If so, can they get back out? Do you even want people there? Can people walk up the mast? Otherwise, although its gimmicky(not natural), I like the look. Its something different and looks fun.

I'm taking a more liberal stance and let people get stuck in weird places if they choose to go there. Of course, if it leads to gameplay problems, you have to do something, but I'm not a fan of invisible barriers at all.

Thanks so much for all the feedback, really do appreciate it! Well the beginning terrain was a square/sandbox to begin with and I basically made it wanting a sandbox feel, players can explore and find spots based on everything inside the sandbox per say.  I do agree with Zagibu and think it's viable to start off with less boundaries, and then get some feedback from players in regards to the map once people have played it.

The boats and the two houses on the corners are at the very edge of the map, but you are able to get on the masses on both boats, and I actually did that on purpose based on the fact #1 killing someone off those and watching them fall 200 feet would be epic!! Any place on the map where you can get high up per say, anyone else can easily get to as well.

The one thing I'm worried about more then boundaries though is the FPS, I have a pretty beefy computer so I'm not sure how the map will work for other players.  But considering nowadays, a majority of serious FPS gamers have next gen graphics cards, therefore making a map graphically intense as this hopefully won't slow them down to much.  I'm getting around 80-120 FPS on the map right now and 60 when I record video.  The map size is around 370kb.  I also tested it on my older laptop with medium high settings and it was perfectly fine.

If anyone is interested, I'd love to have a few people test it out and see if it needs any improvements. Again love all the feedback, you guys are awesome. :)

P.S.  Still waiting on M&B Repository sigh, its been 48 hours.

Best,
RipperX

"Phoenix Castle" looks EPIC!!  Would love to play that map, looks really really cool.  As for the barriers in my map, I'm adding some for the top of the map/sky and on the sides, although I do believe the sides of the map are already bordered with the original 2meter terrain?  My character cant go past any of the corners, but ill add extra barriers on the sides just in case.  As for the forest, I want everything inside the map to be free, players being able to explore rather then being locked down to only certain areas.  In any case, thanks for the tips, yes I figured that out quickly, Red light, Green light hahah.  Cheers.

I think trees are less of a problem than houses, because forests consist only of about 5 or so different trees, while a city can consist of 20+ different houses, which means there are more models and textures to be handled. Plants probably use geometry instancing, too, which gives a huge boost to performance. Actually, all static props could use that.

About maps not saving: if you are on Vista or Windows 7, you either need to run the game in administrator mode or turn off UAC (user account controls...basically makes it always admin mode).

Yes I'm running Windows 7, and the problem was with the UAC.  I disabled it and everything works fine now. :)
