Post by: martyrAD on May 03, 2012, 02:18:03 am
so im thinking of doing the dragoon build with 3 cav 3 ath, etc etc...

gear wise what should i invest in?the glavie? long hafted blade/knobbed/spiked? i have no intetions of using a shield and putting all my wpf in poles.,.. so i need to figure out that...

Never go less than 5 riding. Just.... just don't. Not only will you severely limit your selection of horses, but you'll also be outridden by almost everyone. Even when they are on the heavy "slow" horses.

But then everyone faster than a rouncey will cut you down in the middle enemies/open ground/deep space and that isn't what you want. Maybe go for one more riding than that.

Rouncey is cheap enough that you can test this out with a STF alt.

24/15

8ps 5if 5ath 5rid

use a destrier and heavy lance and a 2h/pole on your back.
rouncey is garbage better off on foot than using it.

Keep in mind that if your Rouncey goes down you will have a hard time finding a new horse for that round.

well the concept of a dragoon is mounted infantry..... meaning while i may start as cav, im more then capable of fighting on foot... going to play around with it a bit more..

Back in Risen our main polearm build was.
18-18
6if
6ps
6ath
6 riding
And I believe you can get 5 shield or 5 wm not sure .

Maybe something like this
(click to show/hide)
Drop IF to fill out other slots.  5 shield is enough, could even go for 4.  5 riding is alright.

Carry a heavy lance
have whatever polearm you prefer to use when dehorsed on your back. this could be LHB, GLB, war spear, poleaxe, whatever.

Everyone here is really pessimistic, I've done several 3 riding builds and it is completely viable to be a dragoon with rouncey. Don't go riding around alone in the middle of nowhere like other cav, because that is where you'll encounter the situation everyone talking about *being outridden/dying*. It isn't a build designed for cav vs cav combat in open planes in the first place.
Stick closer to your team and it is terrifyingly effective. With proper horse control you'll never be outlanced anyways, since lancing is timing your thrust releases for when you and the enemy cav meet.

Why the heavy lance? Also I tend to try to be very supportive... horse bumping and thrusting. Playing distraction... not solo much solo rambo killing machine.. while I kno the rouncy isn't nearly as good as the other horses... I'm not fighting other horses, I'm trying to support infantry with a rather mobile platform..

Reach.
It will also save you from all those enemy cav encounters that you don't want to have but will have anyways.
