@Zlisch,
I'm a supporter of pan-Scandinavism and mostly joking. Also talking about the Viking Age ;)
Denmark's golden period is the Viking Age, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, after that especially demographics in Sweden and Northern Germany stemmed in Danish ambition, though the Kingdom of Denmark had a powerful position in the 17th century with the world's second-largest trade fleet (still among Europe's largest) and Europe and Scandinavia's largest warfleet, until we lost Norway (or rather the Danish-Norwegian union was dissolved). In regards to lost territory don't forget that besides Slesvig-Holsten (which was taken by the Prussians and Austrians, two major power players in the 19th century) this was not lost in battle but due to European power politics, we even won Scania back through invasion but international pressure kept it on Swedish hands.
Concerning WWII then Denmark was more or less strictly an 'Arian' (as viewed by chocolate chip cookie Germany) collaborator state (the government and industry not the population at large) until 1943 when the Wehrmacht started retreating on the Eastern Front. Danish geography meant that it was impossible to stop the blitzkrieg at invasion day and that guerilla warfare was largely impossible during the occupation. This saved our cities from being levelled by German or British bombers (as urged by King Christian X), kept things civil with the Germans and martial law at bay for a few years and ensured a relatively high living standard (highest of any WWII war-related European country). Civil resistance continued all throughout the war, though 'blood for blood' was generally the mutual understanding with the Germans.
I'm not blind for my country's shortcomings and mistakes but it's not as if there's isn't plenty to be proud of even in modern history. The country of Denmark have retained a position of a small but very rich, productive and politically potent trade state, which due to its size of course shouldn't be compared with a major power in terms of 'carrots and sticks'. We also have a cultural treasure trove of warriors, artists, philosophers, scientists and statesmen being one of the oldest states in the World, with the World's oldest state flag still in use, Europe's oldest monarchy and oldest ruling house. And partly in due to the Scandinavian Welfare Model and other social policies we are some of the healthiest (free health care), most educated (free education), happiest and most equal (high taxation especially on the very rich) people on Earth, we have some of the World's best crime statistics and our courts and political system are among the World's least corrupt.
This doesn't mean I like the Danish government nor the Danish power elite, mind you ;)
So typical Scandinavian, always arguing who were the best Vikings :lol:
No need to fight. We were all vikings and badass!
Except the Swedes, of course. Everyone knows they were are pussies.
