For those of you who have issues with "all them damn archers and xbow'ers", "easy mode sword&boarders", "OP throwers" and above all those "#!%@# hybrids", what do you place in your extra slots?
Do many of you play with a single melee weapon and three empty inventory slots? Is the resulting low encumbrance worth the lack of throwing weapons, a shield, or a missile weapon? Two handed beserkers with no shields only invite more and more players to play as the shield, archer, xbow, and throwing classes above. By using a ranged weapon yourself you contribute to "supressing" the enemy, reducing that spam which is so dangerous to a melee only class.
Thoughts?

When I play my two-hander, I typically carry a primary weapon and a secondary weapon that's either a shield-breaker or a weapon uniquely suited to taking out a particularly dangerous individual. Overall, the lack of shield use or ranged weapons is a question of style.
The lack of encumbrance does help when ninja'ing in light armour.

I ve played archer, i tried throwing, i played with shield.... nothing is as thrilling as a good 2hand fight.
-
It varies.
One of my friends used to carry an Awlpike, a shield, a pike and one other weapon I forgot, so he was prepared in every situation.
Even straight 2Hers I usually see carrying at least a situational weapon (commonly a pike for anti-cav duties from what I can see, or an axe to trash enemy shielders).
-
On my pure 2h, I normally leave those slots empty
If there are too many archers, I'll bring a crap shield, too many horses I'll bring a pike or crossbow, but otherwise I use the money for archer or ditch the weight for speed.
Plus, I don't like the look of weapons on the back usually.
Of course, on most characters I use those slots for throwing weapons.
-
For 2H, I just carry a cheap shield/awlpike/shield-basher. On my 1H+Shield, I'll go hybrid and put some points into throwing for ranged engagements. For my HA, I'll just carry a cheap Light Lance for times when I want to poke some people on a Courser.
-
With my 2h I usually carry a pike, for stopping the cav
-
Katana
Pike/Crossbow with Steel Bolts :P or sometimes Siege Ladder or Siege Shield
-
i usually wear my hafted blade when i'm polearm, my katana when i'm 2h and hen not so much more
-
I have one weapon slot used. I however don't whine about ranged. I think archers need a buff actually (speed ). I do curse the ones who kill me to hell thought
-
On my 2 hander, I leave them empty. On my sword and boarder, the other 2 are empty. On my supposed-to-be-secret-but-really-isn't sword and shield alt, I carry a khyber knife in the empty slot, for the style, and to mercy kill surrendered peasants that have nothing left to return to when we torch their farms.

Latley I pretty much have to use sheilds :( but I often use them with a spear so it's very supporty. When I am pure pole arm my load out would be like this. Unless I happen to cav or throw that gen which I do often.
Slot 1 Long hafted blade
Slot 2 Long hafted spiked mace (sometimes I use a bec, swiss hally, english bill)
Slot 3 Pike
Slot 4 Long Maul (often don't use this because of the weight though but provide crush though which is often very helpful even though the weapon is super slow and long recover time)
When Cav
Slot 1 Light lance or Heavy lance
Slot 2 Knightly heater shield
Slot 3 Long hafted blade or long esp
Slot 4 Great long lance
I usually have 6 Atheletics and armor weight under 17 total so the weight on the weapons (save the maul) don't matter so much. I like haveing the different types the pole arms provide because they are very effective in their own ways. Take the pike, if you can live without the need of shield one of the best support weapons in game. Use the pike in first person mode = super fun try it :P
-
For my main, I use the following setup
1: Deadly Bec
2: Cheapo shield (sometimes!)
3: nothing
4: nothing
If I have an x5 bonus, slots 3 and for go to bolts and a sniper xbow
-
Never understand cavalry that use two lances -.-
On my 2H I go crossbow if I feel there are too many archers but mostly it's just a 2h
On my cavalry I use a heavy lance + side arm
-
b/c the great lance is couchable only with 230 range and 35 peirce so if you get hit with it you're always dead. Unless you have a steel sheild in that case it breaks well any shield w/e but you get the point the steal will break in 1 run almost always. Say if I have light lance which I often do I can't out range people even on a thrust attack but with the great lance couched i'll get more range. Also the great lance is very cheap to repair.

on my pure 2h build atm im wearing mw Claymore and Heavy Maul, depending on the map requirements ill bring a ladder or siege shields.
still having some issues with ranged.

So in short you are saying by playing with only 1 weapon we invite more ranged? and we should instead use more ranged weapons ourself to reduce the ranged spam?
but who plays melee then? :|

I bring my weapon, on my shielded I bring one hand weapon and shield, my two hand and polearm only use shields when I expect to have to be in the open a lot
If I am fighting too many cav I bring a pike sometimes
I generally only carry one weapon, just use whatever I think will work best vs the majority of who I am fighting atm

I see now that many of you enter battle with empty slots. Is the encumberance bonus worth it or are you honnestly crippling yourself by not occupying all slots?
