Post by: Jesprlol on April 07, 2012, 02:59:00 pm
The topic pretty much says it all i am speccing 4 in to shields and im going to be using a crossbow and a 1hander + a shield.

What do you guys recommend?

New to this game so explain as much as possible about the shields and why one particular is better then the other and such.

Thanks!

indeed tested it too...so the only 0 slot shield is still the round steel buckler...medium stats second most expensive shield

knightly kite/heater shield
heavy round shield
elite cavalry shield
plate covered round shield

they all are good, but I'd go for heavy round shield because it has nice coverage

i would carry something fast and fairly light without breaking the bank.  Horsemans/knightly heater or round/elite cav would probably give you decent coverage for the price.

remember its likely half the time you wont even get much use out of the shield before you die, no sense in getting 'the best' you can.

something with good speed because, you aint going that high into 1hand wpf.
so id say knightly kite shield is pretty awesome, nearly best speed 100, good endurance etc. and has a bit better protection then the knightly heater

wrong. kite shields are for horseman, they are long to cover your feet when you are on horseback so infantry dont cut them off.  Heater is +2 wider, which means less getting hit from the sides while you are in melee.  Height matters very little in melee or against ranged

you havent played much with a knighly heater i see, (i played it for nearly 22 generations btw,  and i can say good archers (not the normal noob who nearly miss a moving target) can shoot you in the feet or head while you try to protect one of those. its just got so little protection i mean ofc. its great for fighting or running to archers if you know where he will shoot, but in a shieldwall youll get shot several times if unlucky. so the extra height protection is nice and the 2 wide aint that much believe me i rather have nearly 11 height more

I generally agree with Digglez POV, using a Knightly Kite Shield myself.

Pros:
Fast
Light
Cheap
Surprisingly effective
Good coverage, if you learn to position it right

Cons:
Smaller coverage
Low durability, learn to manually block

OFC I use this as a hoplite, mainly to approach archers, and switch to 2H for melee fighting.  YMMV as 1H, generally though, you're not going to get much use at all out of a shield with only 4 skill.  You will want more points to increase your coverage (helps a lot in melee) speed, resistance, etc. if you plan on actually taking hits - with just 4 shield, some of the PS kings with axes will one-shot your shield.

Note, you don't necessarily need a more EXPENSIVE shield, but more points will make lower skill shields more effective as well.

I'd recommend figuring out how you want to play, and build around that.  Shield with a crossbow seems kind of pointless to me to be perfectly honest, you may as well go 2H if you're primarily melee, or drop the shield in favor of more bolts if ranged.

Yeah i guess. Though i usually dont use more bolts then 12 or so per round so having just bolts in one slot is perfect for me. And i dno 1h + shield with Xbow is really fun to play imo and i like it. Also i did get the Heavy Round Shield and i liked it alot . It gave me good protection and so on and i survive way longer now thanks to it!

Thanks for the help everyone!
