Title: Quest for the impossible: A good "free" multiplayer online game?
Post by: Christo on April 03, 2012, 01:32:01 am
-That isn't pay to win
-Has decent gameplay
-Not an asian grindfest where killing a monster gives you 0,0004% xp
-Is something that can appeal to a player for many months, because of it's atmosphere, economy, events etc.
-Enjoyable PVP and PVE
-Is not cRPG.

Now, I think I defined the impossible?

Not a grindfest (only if you make it one) due to innumerable playstyles, but yes it is certainly P2P.

Grindfest is a game where you go on a clearing in a forest and kill some ugly monsters for a month to level up a bit. There's definately no grind like that in eve, and you can pay with ingame cash - not right from the beginning, but when you have 2-3 month behind your back it can be quite an easy task.
And there are ways to get enough cash even while on trial. While you may consider them "grind" cause they involve repeating certain actions again and again, but those actions are by far not as primitive as, for example, Lineage 2 grinding. Or any asian mmo.

Very little grinding if you do it right, due to many choices and ways to play the game:

Looks very interesting, I love the space genre, always wanted to try this but p2p is a no go for me.
If I ever get a job that's giving steady income, not the usual student job you can barely find, this might change.

Closest thing I had was when the multiplayer of Freelancer was strong. I remember being a double agent spy kinda guy to two factions, leading my Hungarian clan that was full of awesome guys, we kicked out a faction from it's home system and locked it for three hours, three hours of constant attack, and we had only four people! The said faction had to bring allies, and we fought 11v4, and still we kept killing them. Admins had to interfere to stop our wars all the time.  :)
Also I won a universe race with my crappy internet, I knew all the shortcuts. Great times.

I'm playing Stronghold Kingdoms ATM. It's pretty fun. Might not be for everyone though.

Tribes: Ascend, which I have been spending a good amount of time on. It's not pay to win at all, though you have to unlock items through playing time. Good community and teamwork based, and if you like fps.

Tribes Ascend is definitely worth trying out, free to play and everything that can be bought with money can also be unlocked through playing.

EVE is pretty much the best you can get right now, not free however.

As for "good" free multiplayer online games I guess APB, Haven and Hearth, Age of Conan, King Arthur's Gold, Pirates of the Burning Sea. Those would be my picks.

As for myself, I'm waiting for Guild Wars 2 and Planetside 2.

APB?

Vibe, are you serious on this one?

Well I only played it for a few hours and it wasn't half bad. Why so surprised?

Christo, do yourself a favour and lay down some bucks for a decent game. Free to play online games are only for kids with a lot of time, but without money. Or for people that for some reason want to pay via microtransactions to be good at a mediocre at best game.

World of Tanks is pretty fun, I find. I've put in 6 euros in it to get some more tank slots. I don't feel like I'm at a disadvantage.

Zis.

World of tanks is perfectly playable without EVER investing ANY money into it.

And its SO MUCH FUN!

WoT was too annoying because of the grind factor.
Also the tier balance, had lots of awful matches thanks to that.

I heard it changed now, so it might be better.

They kinda want you to spend money, or getting a decent tank with equipment will be a nightmare.

I got a Tiger without it ever feeling like a grind. But I lack the grind mentality msot people have. I just play games as long as they're fun, if I'm not having fun, I stop.

Just tried Tribes Ascend...pretty good fun actually. If I didn't have a dissertation to write I'd be killing a lot of time on there.

Tell me, is it still a joke paper tank?

The Tiger is ridiculously fragile in the game.

Also, I've tried this tribes thing, and oh my is it fun to play :D Very action packed.
But I can barely run it on minimum gfx settings..

God I could really use a better PC.

Urmm no.

You get more exp and credits per game with premium, but its not necessary at all.

"Decent tank" is also definately a thing of view.

Tier 5 can be really fun already, and you can reach that in like 2 days without premium.

Tier 7 is pretty much the tier where you will discover the full efficiency of the tank tree branch, and its perfectly reachable in like 1 Week.

The later tiers require more effort then.

Also, it seems to me that you have a wrong image in your mid of that game. Its not about standing in front of every enemy tank ingame with your tank and letting everything bounce on your armor. It requires tactics.

And no, the Tiger is not a joke tank. It´s pretty awesome because the long 8,8 has over 200 Penetration, which basically means you can hurt almost every tank till tier 10 in the Front.

Yes, good game. I also play it currently, only spending some minutes every day during different times of the day (building something here and there, raising up new walls, recruiting more archers or trading, sending troops for a mission).

I mostly played more pay2win games, like Silkroad Online for years, and yes, I often paid more than 20€ a month just to have premium features.

GW1 and Lord of the Rings Online are currently the only both games (MP, MMO like) I guess are good for free. You need to buy one GW version but there is no monthly fee. LotRO is for free and it is possible to play without any costs, however there are a lot of advantages if you pay money (it is also very nice if you enjoy roleplaying, then you simply do not need to pay anything).

I dont know, when did you play it last?In beta?

It´s still something you would call "paper" (100mm front hull armor), but it´s definately a very good tank.

Also, little fact: The Oh-so feared Tiger from WWii is actually the Tiger II ingame, the "King tiger".

And THAT is for sure a fucking awesome machine!

christo, try out EVE.
the first 30 days or so are free, and even if you don't manage to get enough ISK (ingame currency) to get it free2play you can still buy it for another month (25-30 € iirc, which isn't more than any other good game) and try to get the ISK until you get over the free2play margin - and THEN you have what you want!

sounds so easy, but you can at least check it out - I did it too, but I stopped because I am too busy irl (and then I got into cRPG lol)

I played World of Tanks in beta when you would still get 200 gold for free everyday, even then I thought it was quite the grind. Then the beta ended and there was no 200 gold a day anymore and my jaw dropped from the time it took to get a new tank. Ridiculous grind, as soon as I needed to grind through a tank that I didn't like to get one I thought I would like I quit.
