are they worth trying to play? and if so a build for one? also what about a hopolite/thower hybrid?

Yes a 1h/shield hybrid thrower is definitely very nice, being able to switch from melee to range really adds a lot of fun to the game, and you can get a lot of nifty kills with the versatility or at least soften people up nicely. My clan is built around this class as standard infantry, everyone is a huge fan of it.
Look for something along these lines:
Strength: 21
Agility: 15
Skills to attributes: 2
Ironflesh: 3
Power Strike: 7
Shield: 4
Athletics: 5
Power Throw: 5
Weapon Master: 5
One Handed: 115
Throwing: 108
Feel free to tune it, you could even get away with 24/12 (personally I like jarids, but maybe you prefer heavy axes).
If you put on leather gloves you can wear medium armour, my armoured setup gives 40 head, 46 body, 44 legs.

awesome, i guess my only other real question, if i use a spear and shield, with the spear out does it count as a polearm or1h for wpf?

Polearm

stupid
Hey smartass he also asked about hoplite.
MB on 1h skill, like armpit said, replace with polearm for hoplite.
-
hoplites dont do enough damage or have enough reach to justify using a shield. either go 1h/shield + throwing hybrid or longspear
Throwing is best hybrid with 1h/shield. Its a great way to soften up heavy enemies, discourage back-pedellers, kill lightly armored opponents trying to flee
