Title: Roman armours?
Post by: Sharky on March 02, 2011, 03:54:35 am
There are three clans with roman backgrounds, plus d'haran legions, and a lot of ppl would love to wear them.
Bring them please, think about how cool would be a ninjas vs legionaries battle!
Republican roman, Imperial roman, late roman, palatine armours, byz armours, bring them all! Or at least some of them :(

I would honestly love this, even if it is just a few pieces.

I would really really love to see Roman armour in CRPG.  I have been asking for it for months and months , too bad I am complete newb when it comes to creating ingame items. :(

Gorath created Hoplite body armour, head armour and 1 hand sword awhile back, but his computer blew up and he did not have the  files backed up .  I really wish I knew how to create ingame items, but its too late to learn, I am too busy now and soon going to get much busier. :(

Yeh I really want to learn how to model and texture because it can't be hard making some weapons. But I think Armour would be a pain in the ass.

i think it is a fine idea, and previous examples show, that if you make 2-3 nice-looking armors, chadz will add them in the next patch.
(i would also like to know how to make ingame items)

Actually, it is quite hard, especially texturing. I don't think roman armors would fit in, but then again we already got like 20% ninjas and 10% samurais, so...

Yeah true, but the problem is that the majority (read as all but 1%) of medieval armor looks stupid or boring or both.  Historically accurate sure, but boring as hell.  No sense of style back then.  If we could have piecemail armor then it might not be so bad but we can't so meh.

Boring and lame

Yeah classical armours were just cooler. Plate armours looked gay, especially the most expensive one.

I am against this. The armor list even focusing on western europe alone has a massive time divergence for what was used when, and the weapons are even worse. Seeing people in a server using things from 800 to 1450 is a massive slap in the face for historical accuracy, so when I see a ninja suddenly run around the corner being chased by a Samurai a Seljuk Fari cav and a Conquistador, I just nod and grin thinking "Yeah this game is fun, look at all the shiny implements of destruction."

As the co-leader of a roman clan all we need is 3 helmets 2-3 body armours. And a rectangular shield with central iron boss. A shield that covers from shins to nose.

Head armor
leather legionaire helm
Steel legionare helm
Centurions helm

Body armor
leather body armor
Old period mail armor
Steel segmented armor over mail

Optional body armor
A roman generals steel and leather armor with crimson cape

Ill look for pictures and code from other mods

Also most of the time armies had almost no uniform. Take english longbowmen. Many would wear either a tunic with your lords colors. A mail coat taken from the dead. Quilted cloth (western version of greek composite) a pretty leather jacket. Many wouldn't have boots or helmets. In movies and videos uniform was shown. Uniform was expensive and impractical for men who are gonna die. The romans and greens are by far the first users of uniform mostly because its intimidating and a morale boost. Also ninja, samurai,  saracens, russians, mongols, a tank of a horse, conquistadores, the flamberge, turks, norsemen and danes. I don't see a problem here its only like 8 or 9 items that are easily found in roman mods. I mean honestly you arnt really gonna make a difference from theme.

Late roman armours were used even after the fall of the western empire in all western europe, so i think late roman armours wouldn't be soo much anacronistic since there is already 8 century equipment.
Byz armours also should be in the mod since the eastern roman empire was a significant force for all the middle ages and their equip was renowed in western europe for all the dark ages, it's just wierd to just have that awful "byzantine" helmet in the mod.

Also late roman heavy cavalry armours would be awesome. Here you go a picture from one of those lovely osprey books. Masks were probably used just in parades but armours were used

Medieval ppl had also style btw. Such lovely armours!

Medieval and reniassance western style (both clothing and armor) were probably some of the lamest fashions in history until disco and the 80's.  Oh and the current emo crap.

Ok so get this. Roman Segmented armor fancy cool not gay, good feel to it. If there's a back dude in viking stuff with a scimitar, knightshield, on a steppe horse carrying throwing lances. No sense. Some simple pretty roman stuff that's cool and easy. For fancy shit a full suit of scale armor with boots and all for eastern cataphracts that's fancy. Just stick with the roman mail, leather, and segmented armors and the helmets. Also a shield would be nice.

From what i have seen people like fantasy more than realism.

Hehe, Roman Cavalry Armor = Sarmatian, and so soon after the demise of the Sarmacian Raiders clan.

THIS IS DAMN BULLSHIT I SAYS! DOESNT FIT TO THE AGE AND LOOKS UGLY AND MAKES THE GAME LAG!

Lorica segmentata was actually used pass the fall of the Roman empire till well into the 6th century by mercenary troops, since the Medieval Ages start around 5 century and go till the 15th century that falls well into the "Game age" (whatever that happens to be).  Lorica segmentata fell out of use not because it wasn't a great piece of kit but because it was hard to make, it was expensive and it was harder to take care of.

I am not even going to bother answering the game lag issue, since if we took this seriously we would all be running naked.

Ok, we talk about an historic time line, why not, but i'm unable to find Calradia on our real world map...
I've never eard something about a Swadia kingdom in school, or even Sarranid.

It's a game and nothing is real, so why talking of history.

If items are balanced why don't add them, it gives more diversity.

Well, i will not wear roman armors but i'm for adding them in the game.

And I love you for that.

People seem to forget that one the Calradia is a fake place and two the factions in it have massively divergent technological gaps for the stuff that they use.

Im supporting this cuz I lead a roman themed clan.  Viking clans have their stuff, mongol clans have theirs, crusaded clans got theirs, arab clans even a freaking semi hoplite clan get some good looking stuff. No roman armours at all sigh. Its 6-7 things 3 helmets, 3 body armors ( 1 optional) and a shield nothing else needed

The primary deciding factor I use to pick games I play is realism.   And yet I approve of roman equipment.  As the best comment said there is already time gaps between armors existing in the fake land of calradia.

If you really are for this Idea I suggest going into the taleworlds forums. Buried in there is someone who made lots of roman equipment and modeled it for this game and has it ready to add.

Also I think (think)  that I remember chadz saying if someone gives him the models he will add it.

Yep, what Kharn said, as long as you have the models. Much like what happened with the new one handed swords and the Bill hook/ Swiss halberd.

Just throwing it out there that the King Arthur armour is completely anachronistic.  I watched the movie in a room full of medieval history scholars and it was received as a comedy - especially Keira Knightley's accent.

EDIT:  They still look cool though and I'd love to see them added, just not labelled Roman armours.

The whole idea was style, not historical accuracy.  Historically most crap had no style, which is boring, which is why in entertainment things are spiced up so they're not as boring.  This doesn't mean going completely into the realm of fantasy/anime, but a general stylistic sensibility.

I understand why, however I think it's rather comedic that a bunch of history scholars watched an action movie expecting anything more than an entertaining action movie.
I mean, you don't watch the history channel's medieval special for great acting and action sequences do you?

Oh they knew what they were getting into.  It was while I was taking a course on Celtic Mythology and we watched the movie as part of our "Celtic myth in modern society" unit.  The prof did it on the class' suggestion and made a movie night of it, where people could bring popcorn and shout at the movie.  My preference was to watch some Stargate episodes but I got overruled by Clive Owen fans/women.  Turns out, though, that there's actually been a fair bit of scholarship about the movie that's pretty interesting and accessible.  Most of it is analyzing the movie from a cultural perspective, though, not as a historical piece.
