Title: Suggestion: Scouting
Post by: dynamike on February 20, 2012, 06:47:19 am
An idea so simple I can't believe it's not butter (and noone else brought it up yet):

Enable clan members or at least officers to see other members' lines of sight on the Strat map.

E.g.: we send a dude to an area beyond our line of sight and can see what he is seeing on the map. We call him a scout and have a new job to give to people in Strat to make it more appealing to the general population.

Pro's:
Improve Strat appeal by adding things for members or factionless people to do
Additional diplomatic options (intelligence trade)
More strategy and planning, less blind running around
Less boring sitting around in fiefs

Con's:
Favors bigger clans or clans with better diplomacy
"Green supports it" and nerf cav (?)

Win? Win!

+1 but couldn't they just ask the member through the forums (pm, email, voice chat, chat rooms)

This is an amusing suggestion considering you have illuminati in your clan now.
(If you don't understand my comment, I will not clarify)

-buying 5 keys
-assign them as scouts
-sending them to all corners of the map
-who are these guys? I do not know them * poker face *

try use TS, screenshoots, teamviewer or Advanced Tactical Center

Its a nice idea but I really love that strat is so raw. Its man power over macro bs.

If you want intelligence you go get it yourself or you have to go out and look at crap.

Improvement to the idea...

for one, scouting is very important and should not be put into easy mode. Thus it should be a feature where you can "ask for reports" and it will take like 2 hours but then you get like 3 hours only of vision from their positions... It needs restraints. And it should also cost something / have a refresh timer.

It's bad enough that you can get on vent and ask "whaddya see". This is medieval. No radios, telephones, gps, internet, etc. Scouts had to go and come back, and say OH FUCK DUDE THERE'S GUYS OVER THERE

totally agree.  And considering that we have instant communication it's not hard for your "scout" to take a screenshot, upload to tinypic and link you.  It might take a whole 2 minutes.

I say NAY to the idea of seeing what your "scouts" see.

When you have to organize a whole war campaign for a faction, you will think differently. Most of the times working with people in Strat is like herding a bag of fleas and to get them to send a screenshot from a specific location in a defined time frame rather difficult.

All you would see is the area in a few circles in the 5 (??) corners of the map, not everything on their way (unless you watch them the whole time). Having multiple keys is bannable in Strat, but assigning the job to clan members would give more of them a purpose. Good suggestion about ATC though!

I am not suggesting to make it ridiculously easy to see the whole map, but in order to be able to plan you need some kind of visual intelligence.

Also don't disregard the additional diplomatic options and reasons for clans to work together thus would provide.

Not disagreeing with you there mike, but I think the point of strategus should try to move away from one person doing everything manually, while everyone else is basically automated bots (crafting/transferring or recruiting/transferring).  I feel useful when I'm on the edge of the map and see troop movements and let my leaders know.

Otherwise all it would take is for one person to be active (to see what's going on in the strat map), and everyone else in the faction logs in once a week to transfer goods and troops.

I think I know what you're talking about.

Maybe implement the ability to erect and control watchtowers, granting everyone in your faction sight of a certain radius around it. It would introduce new tactics as far as controlling/holding watchtowers.

This just shows that this game is the best feudal war simulator possible.

Recruiting "Scouts" or having them as an item would be a good balance mechanic, allowing you to share (more) information (faster) between parties with them.  Additionally, they could increase your own sight radius slightly.
