Title: Is Steel Shield viable?
Post by: Dravic on February 10, 2012, 08:42:20 pm
Hey guys,

Didn't play for a long time as a shielder - is Steel Shield as viable as it was year ago, worse or better?

Cause I really like the idea of shield that eats any amount of bolts and arrows + taking MANY hits before going down while giving you a correct coverage (especially with a lot of shield skill).

Posted it here in General Discussion cause I am not beginning Shielder nor do I need guiding. Just asking if it is still good shield or not.

Force field is still in effect.  I think they may have tweaked shield skill a little so they're not indestructible any more, but they are certainly viable as far as I can tell from fighting people with them.  Obviously the only trade off is the speed rating.

Also the last patch they implemented a strategus feature of shield wall.  If you and another shielder are blocking next to each other you get a force field "bonus", the more shielders together and the longer they hold their blocks the larger the field gets.

My problem with the steel shield is the slow speed. The huscarl already is painfully slow and the block is noticably slower then the animation. I cringe to think of how much worse it is for the Steel shield. It is near indestructable though from most range and most builds, but it goes down very fast against axes, even faster then normal due to low HP.

I should get around to testing it, though the cost also makes me raise an eyebrow.

Works quite well with my spear/shield setup.  The high durability lets me backpedal all the way across a map to teammates if I am pressured too much.

I thought shield armor meant your damage had to be higher than that armor # before you start damaging the Hit Points of the shield?

Getting a little off topic here, but I think the OP's question has been answered.

Round cav shield.
2 skill weight 4.5 Speed 100. I rarely ever find that it breaks. Sure a massive axe will explode the shield but your either being ganked or being silly if your blocking axes with a shield.

He was a great gothic plate with bevor, armet, steel pick and steel shield user who, say what you will about his inability to manual block, could murder a lot of people using that shield. However, the steel shield is so slow, it is very possible for someone to utterly ruin you with fast enough swings and using attack animations to the fullest.

It is simply too slow of a block speed to be worthwhile against people who know about that. In group fights though it can be priceless.

No real point to using a steel shield anyway, when you could use a plate covered round shield, which for all intents and purposes is faster, lighter, one slot, and just as durable against anything without bonus against shields.

little offtopic...

Round Steel Buckler and Steel Buckler are 1slot shields?

I'm really don't see a reason to use it - it's slow, it's expensive, and it's incredibly heavy.

Against normal weapons, I almost never have my shield break anyways. Against shield breaking weapons, the steel shield breaks pretty at pretty much the same rate as any of the shields I use.

I whip one out every now and then just to play around, and I almost always regret it.

...

Hmm, it with the 3-slot maul change it is a bit more usefull.
Lately i see a lot of 2h/mallet combos and the steel shield is able to block the overheads of the mallet.

Tried blocking two swings and then swin-nope
Tried spinning after one swi-nope
Tried kicki-nope
