Title: Viable build? Heavy archer
Post by: Turboflex on January 30, 2012, 05:00:34 pm
I'm thinking about trying this, but could use input of people with more archery experience. I currently run as hybrid 1h/shield infantry-thrower.

Basically the idea is to be a armoured archer shotgunning people at short range with a longbow. The way I play thrower now transferred to a longbow: pop people with jarids as they close distance to soften them up for melee, take shots at passing horses, nail people in siege server chokes like ladders where they are sitting ducks. Basically allow short range, sniping accuracy is not important. I would use a 1 slot 2h as my weapon, one of those 1h weps with an alternate 2h mode or maybe that 1 slot pitchfork.

Strength: 24
Agility: 12
Skills to attributes: 2

Ironflesh: 5
Power Strike: 8
Athletics: 4
Power Draw: 8
Weapon Master: 4

Two Handed: 105
Archery: 104

So knowing the role I envision, can this work statistically? What kind of armour can I use (the heavier the better, I'm not looking to be a hit and run archer).

With the current state of archery I would recommend using crossbow instead.  that way you wouldn't need to waste the 8 skill points on pd

You need a minimum of PD*14 in wpf to get to use it. So 112. And that is if you keep your armor under 7 weight.

Well I could drop PD to 6 and add 2 more IF (never hurts).

Use this to find out what your real wpf will be with what armor. Not sure it is completely accurate though but should be somewhat close.

I am not an archer ( i have played with a bow for a while, but it was not my style :) ), but here is some input on your 2h:

You want heavy armor, low athletics and low WPP in 2h/Polearm... That is not a good combination for a short weapon. 1h+Shielder will facehug you, spamming left attacks, and 2h user will stab you from a distance. Your blocking skill and timing have to be magical, if you don't want to become an easy target. Slow hybrid archers are a tasty snack for many cRPG predators :)

EDIT: All-in-all, it just does not sound like a very good idea to me personally... Very high upkeep, severe melee handicap and low accuracy with bow. Best hybrid archers i met, were all using a Long/Bastard Sword, Horn Bow and about 30-40 body armor without helmets. Others are more archers then melee, or vice-versa, and are not "true" hybrids imo :)

Unless you reallly need ironflesh... This way you can have a lot more accuracy meaning more headshots meaning more kills. Your still pretty good at melee, but you could drop some ath for ps, as your playstyle seems to be unlike the average archer " Yay i shoot. Oh no he is chasing me, time to run for a few minutes and hide" If your gonna be right in the front and being like a heavy support gunner dropping ath might be for you. If you are chased you can just get out your mace, whack em to the head and then deliver a few more arrows.

This way you'll receive 18 effective wpf in archery (without armor penalty). So you must concentrate on BIG targets. Siege towers, enemy castles, hills, mountains...
