Title: EU_crpg_Melee mapmaking competition (800k prize pool!!) - Event concluded!

Welcome mapmakers to the EU_crpg_Melee mapmaking competition

The EU_crpg_Melee server is in need of some fresh new maps and you, players, are in need of cold hard cash 8-)

So here are some rules/guidelines if you want to participate in this event:

Maps should be small: The size of native arenas or a bit larger. These maps are intended for a 30 man melee only server.

Scenery and terrain:  You can decorate the map with whatever you want but keep in mind that too much hills/slopes is bad for melee combat. If you will put houses in the maps unbreakable ladders that lead to roofs are unnecessary as there is no ranged on this server.

How to get your map in the competition:

Post it here with a brief description, a link to your map and some screenshoots:
Atleast some screenshots are mandatory (1st team spawn, 2nd teams spawn and a bird view of the map)

Maps will be tested and probably voted for on a poll. The exact process of how the winners are chosen is yet to be decided.

Question: Must the map(s) we submit be exclusive to the 'EU_crpg_Melee' server or would it be okay if the same maps were hosted elsewhere?
I know some server owners like to have original map rotations.

Awesome idea! Hopefully we'll see some new map makers enter, as well as all the usual suspects. I know I'll try to get something together.

Doesent have to be exclusive for the melee server, you can post the map, if it meets the parameters mentioned it will be in the competition

Go go, get these weird melee people some new maps! And please do it quickly before Umbra runs of with my gold.

Any maps that are good and the creator allows it will be hosted on the server, winner or not you can still show of your awesome work!

Really hoping for a good turnout on this contest.  :wink:

Winner will be declared in this thread, the exact process of picking the winner is yet to be decided. As for bandit mapmakers ill bug Gazda our main artist to make some :lol:

Hey man i think your map looks great however the spawns are waaaaay too far away from eachother for a 30 man melee only server

I tested it with worm and came to these suggestions for spawns (disregard the white cross in the bottom left of the screen):

Bum's of Swadia

Bunch of bum's were thrown out from the bar and now they seeks revenge!

-Released 20.01.2012
Same map as Battle in Swadia but remade for smaller servers ~30 men.
-Only Battle mode & MotF entry points inside the smaller area (0,32,67,68,69).

Can't say much for size and layout, not that much of a melee player myself, just host the thing.

But damn that map looks awesome Mustikki!  :D

Umbra. You lazy fool, get around to testing! And I sold of some a old loom I had lying around the other day, so I'll be adding another 200k to the first prize to a total of 500k, think awesome map makers like you all should have a decent reward for putting the time and effort in.

When i was designing this map, i were all the time making this for 100 men server, so that map might be indeed, a bit big for a 30 men server.

ps. i'm going to modify this a bit for smaller server. just the spawns so nothing big.

pps. Updated my earlier post, as that one is the map, i'm participating in the competition. Also you may use which map either (or both), you want in your server.

All the maps so far have been tested. Thanks again to Worm for hosting the test server and helping out.

UPDATE: The prize pool is now an amazing 800k! The winner prize has been increased for 200k!


About the maps:

@ Chagan: Sweet looking map but the spawns are bit too far apart, here are my suggestions for new spawns from the field tests:

@ Gazda: The spawns are good, but as we explored the map worm and me had this cool idea that the teams spawn on top while they can see one another trough the doorway, dunno if its possible to put spawns on such a tight place but here is what we had in mind :

If your looking for so much smaller map, im afraid this one would take too much effort for convertion and loose the town spirit.
But i got a very cool idea of bar fight.

Just so we can have some fun maps on the melee_only (Like we had with the Risen Melee Only we had terrible boat maps, where you fall endless in the sea, and in volcanoes etc.)

In my opinion you should make those hills on the second pic less steep, these overly stretched textures dont look pretty. If you don't want people to go up them you can also just invisible barrier them and not have smear textures.

Ok, testing is moved for the next weekend so people can have time to make their maps. After that is done and the maps are edited ( i usualy request closer spawns due to the nature of the server) it will be decision time. (Unless more people request more time for making maps)

i had the same problem with my old laptop, it just shuts down, and sometimes there ere some weird white stripes cross the screen befoer it shut down, I got new laptop now, and doesnt happen anymore. I think it has to do with overheating

Tested the other maps, spaws are good i have no complaints there.

@ Belenos - very interesting map to say the least :D

@ Mustiki - looks awesome, and female chars can serve drinks

@ Vagabond - Spartaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!  :mrgreen:


I will leave the competiton open for a few more days if anyone wants to submit more maps. Do it fast tho, im happy with the ammount and quality of posted maps and decision time will be soon.  :D

Btw Thovex i just noticed that you didnt post a dl link to your map, please do so i can test it.

A big thanks to everyone that participated, all the maps are of high quality and will be used in the rotation. It was a very tough decision to make since they were all so good.

Belenos, there is a small isssue with the cliff spawn. Some guys spawn and fall down to their death, so if you could just extend the spawn area for a bit or surround it with forcefields that would be awesome

The spawn bug.
The team opposite of the cave. People who spawn in full line, will be spawned in very edge of the wall and some eventually drops down to death.

So, move the entry point more to other edge and test it with full line of bots spawning, so they would not drop to their death right at the moment.

Or i could do that, if you don't have much time now.

Ps. Team 2 spawn point is a place, no one can enter once leaved. So if someone spawns while afk, no enemy can harm him.
