It is a bug, there is feature called AUTOBEG, it turns on when ur gold goes under 100 if i remember correctly.

In this case it didn't turn on, so it is a bug.

Sorry about your misfortune.  The FAQ says you can only beg if you have less than 35 gold though and doesn't say anything about it turning on automatically.  Did it automatically turn on in an earlier version of Strategus?

No it turned on automatically with my clanmates, didn't remember the amount, but 35gold should last 35hours in Dhirim. Since begging gives u atleast 1 gold, it should last 70hours.
