Title: Which class is better for what, and why?
Post by: Soldier_of_God on January 07, 2012, 02:19:38 am
I'm just curious which combat builds are good for what, and why. And while i have played this game for a long time, i just want to get a different perspective on the issue.

Purpose of the thread: to discover and explore the various reasons on why people choose a particular weapon style, what its strengths and weaknesses are,  and to gain different insight into the whole class theme.

Please Discuss the pros and cons of 1h, 2h, and/or polearms, and some of your personal reasons why you have your favorite.

I suppose this doesn't include other classes such as hoplite, thrower, crossbowman or archer?

while these are good things to play to have fun, they're support classes. im really mostly interested in having a concise thread with different takes on combat, and why their weapon style works for them.

Searching "what class to choose?", "which class is better?" and "class comparisons" have nothing relevant to what im asking, so this is why this thread exists.

Heres a perfect example of what im looking for

I deeply enjoy 1h combat, particularly without a shield. This is because a) I like the 1h weapon models best, and 2) the first Gothic game made me like 1h without a shield.

As a 1h/shielder, I see myself as a distraction/pusher first, and a killer second. Perfectly content to dance around blocking everything in a 1v1 while I wait for backup.

When I was a polearmer, I was either anti-cav with a pike/bamboo, a melee support (throwing in pokes as teammates swing, keep the enemy blocking), or a straight-up killer with my Bardiche. Sometimes all three, polearm class is very flexible.

I have dabbled in 2h, seems to be less versatile than poles, better at 1v1 fights due to hiltslashing/animations etc.

I am terrible at all three, so this is just my opinion. Ranged isn't my cup of tea.

Melee styles, particularly toe to toe combat, is the focus here. note i have a 2h cav, but for me, i fight 2h. i dont flail my horse around :3

I don't think this topic makes much sense, because of 2 reasons:

1.: You won't receive an answer which class would be the best for a certain style of playing, all you will receive is a statistic about the most popular classes.

2.: I don't think there will really be a best class, otherwise it would be pointless to play the other classes, don't you think so? IMHO it is more important what you feel comfortable with, and the only thing to find this out is trying all classes yourself. Creating a "skip the fun" character once a week helps there. And don't tell me you are not patient enough to wait for the cooldown to reset, I would recommend to play each class at least for two weeks regularly, before you can even dare to make yourself a picture about the capabilities of the class when reaching the corresponding skill ceiling.

What you are doing here is asking: "Hey folks, I am searching for the best music for me. What are you listening to?" and all you will receive are the charts in small. But you must find your own, special style, and that's why a poll, that only shows the preferences of the majority, is completely useless.

DOHOHOHOHO "support classes"! If by "support" you mean "JoE frequently tops the scoreboards as lancer cav, killing literally every fucking thing he sets his big, blue, gay eyes on" then yes, there is melee and support and no one else; cavalry exist only to support the big fat stupid gaggle fuck of team-wounding, kindergarten-level intelligence melee infantry.

NERF CAV

And Joker I love you and your metaphor usage. You've aptly summed up literally everything in the thread, minus my unreasonable but ever-present anger.

Fuck you. I'm a hybrid 1h / 2h yet you have no option for me to represent myself.

Having shield skill and 2h weapon wpf is pointless in that you can never use both simultaneously. You can easily get yourself into situations where you're stuck with your shield out blocking someone in melee. Or if you're trying to take on two archers at once, if one of the archers pulls his melee out while the other shoots you from range, you have to choose between getting hit by a projectile or getting hit by melee. With 1h proficiency, this will never happen. No slowdown from switching weapons when you're chasing an archer and bringing your shield out doesn't by itself, create risk. You can still play hoplite since you have 1h wpf as well.

I'm cavalry as well, otherwise my build would be a lot better for melee.

Level 32 (17 784 806 xp)
Strength: 21
Agility: 16
Hit points: 70
Ironflesh: 7
Power Strike: 7
Shield: 4
Athletics: 5
Riding: 5
Horse Archery: 0
Power Draw: 0
Power Throw: 0
Weapon Master: 5
One Handed: 89
Two Handed: 131

Really, I'm 1h + 2h + cav because I get bored quickly doing the same shit over and over. If I could fit pole wpf into my build, I would.

For me the best class is pole (long spear). This weapon doesn't need so much skill. I'm not young and therefore I don't have reflexes of young people and the time to improve my skills so long spear is good choice for me..

Pole+2h Hybrid.

Actually, Im a Pole+2h+Crossbow hybrid, but its about melee so...

Sometimes I like killing with polearms, and when I get bored I switch to 2h and vice versa.

Its fun.

Polearms.

Been there, doing it since I joined the mod.
Flexibility for the win.

Played a gen of 2H, it was fun but got boring by the end. Now playing polearms and not anywhere near getting bored of them. 2H has 1 real role: 1v1 heavy hitter. Polearms have tons and tons of roles you can play with them. Doing a gen of pole/1h now with a longspear and military cleaver.

Best class is pure 2hander. Simple as that. Then polearm very close. Hybrids are fun, but not best. Str is superior to agi and hybrids usually need good agi to get good wpf for both. I will say 24/15 2h is the Class. My main is a shielder, but its sooo inferior in any way to those. With the new versions of crpg the gap is even bigger, since blocking manually its not that hard and shields last for like 3 axe hits these day.
But the advantages of the 2handers are way stronger than those 3 "free blocks". First, longer reach, that is clear. Massive damage compared to 1h. Speed advantage for not carrying a shield. Better animations. Way better surviality. Much better equipment at the same upkeep rate. A much funnier selection of weapons. The only real con is  you are prone to ranged attacks, but with the massive rains of arrows nowadays you get killed with or without shield anyways..... Salute.

Its nothing personal,  i just really hate it when people criticize a legitimate thread to fluff their sack and whatnot. if you were being sincere, i appreciate it honestly. i actually did look at those links and while it gives some info, i really wanted to hear peoples stories, their logic. not statistics, or design purposes of each class. please don't take it personally man.

Cav, because I am not a peasant and I refuse to walk anywhere. I must conserve my stamina for the battle ahead, why waste it trudging in the mud like a hog?

I only accept duels from others of noble birth like myself. Those on foot are not deserving of duels, for to accept would lower one's stature. By dueling a peasant you elevate their status to be equal to one of noble blood. They should all be arrow'd and trampled when they get out of line and forget their place.

I don't see much point in using 1h and  not hybridizing. There's a whole bunch of extra slots just sitting there.

1h + pole.

Even if you have 1 wpf in polearms or 100-150, a pocket spear can help defend you and your teammates against cavalry.
