Title: Good series/shows!
Post by: Kerrigan on December 30, 2011, 03:46:39 am
So I have watched Lost, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Heroes, The Walking Dead, American Horror Story and I am now gonna start watching Dexter. I am looking for some more quality series I should watch that maybe you guys can tell me about!

Or just share your favorite series!  :)

The Wire. It is pretty much the best series ever made. I think it got like 9,7 in rating on Imdb. I have watched Dexter, The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad as well. All great series.

The Mentalist, not the same genre that you're listing there but if you're into "alternative" crime drama's (continue past that part) to things like CSI.

It follows a character called Patrick Jane who used to be a "psychic" who is now helping the "CBI" solve murders primarily while chasing "Red John" who murdered his wife and daughter. It's a basic plot setting but it's what Jane does that makes it a good show, he's very much a laid back guy who prefers to trick the offenders into giving themselves up and solving things without technology and just by being able to work it out by how people act. Sort of like Derren Brown (for the Brits who know of him) and a detective rolled into one alongside a sarcastic, arrogant twat of a person.

The Wire. It is pretty much the best series ever made. I think it got like 9,7 in rating on Imdb. I have watched Dexter, The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad as well. All great series.

This.

Its a little bit hard to get into at first (because its kinda "realistic" and not much over the top) but if you finally do, you are much rewarded.
You get a gritty, suspenseful show with the best character-development out there. And you probably get the most badass black-gay-dude ever.
I would say The Wire is the best TV-Series i've seen so far. Its definitly worth it.

Along this line i would recommend "The Shield". Not as good but nonetheless a very good show.

Flight of the Chonchords (Great Musical Comedy, love the songs, love the protagonists)

An absolute gem of weirdness.

And another one for the crime-loving dudes: "The Sopranos". Just look it up. There is no Best-Series-List on the internet without that on it.

Blackadder(Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry - a must see)
'Allo 'Allo
The thin blue line(Another funny one with Rowan Atkinson)
Sopranos(Mafia drama)
Rome
Coupling

I third The Wire. Shit was so cash.

Would also suggest Spartacus: Blood & Sand for some good killing and some fine men and a LOT of nudity.

If you're into anime, these were the best (for me):
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Death Note
One piece (if you feel like watching hundreds of episodes)

A little known TV show (In the Uk anyway) that is fucking hilarious is Kenny vs Spenny. Basically, they do competitions against each other like 'Who can come the most'. Kenny is literally an evil genius who finds inventive ways to cheat where as Spenny is an up-tight bundle of sticks. Whoever loses does a humiliation.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fzi6BaZijRY

The wire and the sopranos are both similar in that they don't necessarily drag you in straight away but if you stay for a few episodes and get to know the characters then they are both absolutely amazing series. The wire is better though, definitely.

If you like British humour, The IT Crowd and Peep Show are both awesome.

Supernatural (Castiel is hot and so is Dean, come on...)

*Pukes*

This, but for another Reason.

Supernatural is the Incarnation of every wet dream Teenagers have:

2 Good looking Brothers(In your wet dream, you are obviously one of them) with a tragic background roam around the country in a 67 Impala(*Orgasmic*), Killing every motherfucking monster or ghost they come around, with a lot of fucking WEAPONS!Ah, and yeah, theres a freaking awesome lot of blood in it, too.

While they do this, they fuck hot chicks.

And angels and demons are in there, too, but they are more like a sidenote.

I swear to god, there is NO episode in all the 5 seasons I´ve seen yet you DONT see a hot girl.

This show is the most awesome thing since the invention of the internet.

  • Deep Space 9 (thinly disguised modern (at the time) day issues, good points and observations on social issues, also last few seasons were space fighting porn for the eyes, so much EXPLOSIONS))
  • Supernatural (Castiel is hot and so is Dean, come on...)
  • Walking Dead (Zombie show that does not suck and has yet to be cheesy, I love it)

Aye id agree with those, but then i used to wath Voyager as well.

Then you get to todays TV especially here in Britain there is nothing on at the weekends now its all Strictly Come Dancing and the X-factor with Britains Got Talent thrown in the mix, stupid TV.

TV is that bad i was forced to watch Merlin, and well it was.....enjoyable.

Rome ( Brilliant show, you must watch it if you haven't seen it )
Deadwood ( shit ending, but every single episode was awesome before that, but it really isn't for everyone )
Band of Brothers ( Excellent, one of the best things I've ever had the pleasure of watching, I watch it atleast once every year now )

They are my favourites, currently I am watching Terra Nova, which is actually pretty good just to sit down, watch and relax, you don't need to think much. But it really isn't for the type of person that likes to pick holes in everything, because it has a good few flaws, yet I still manage to enjoy it, so it can't be all that bad.

Awesome. I read about The Wire, seems to be a really good series. I think I will start watching that aswell.

Same with Firefly, sci-fi show lovers are saying that that is the best one. Better check it out then!

Quite a list there Tears, although I am not sure about Supernatural and Trrue Blood, I always thought that to be a chick series kind of like Twilight but I guess I was mistaking

Keep 'm coming guys!

Most of my favorite shows have already been mentioned but there's two shows that I'd like to add.

- Generation Kill (7 episode miniseries about marines in Iraq. Based on true story.)
- Mad Men (about 1960's ad world)

I watched them only recently because they didn't sound very interesting but now they go in my top 5.

Some good suggestions in here I'll just chip in on...

Spartacus (Blood & Sand, Gods of the Arena, and soon to come, Vengeance.  No need to say anything else.)

Battlestar Galactica (The 2004-2009 series.  Fucking epic is all I have to say.  I didn't watch it for the longest time and finally caught up with the whole thing on Netflix.  Can't believe I never saw it before.)

Dexter (You'll love this one - very original series that'll keep you on the edge of your seat most of the time.  And you never know who's gonna die either since they have no problem killing off main characters... no one's safe!)

Homeland (New series that just came out, shows right after Dexter.  Didn't expect this one to be the gem that it is.  Really awesome series as well.  1st season just ended.)

Generation Kill (Awesome choice.  Derived from accounts written by a journalist that was embedded with 1st Marine Recon in Iraq.  Read the book and watched the series - both were great.)

Trueblood (definitely more hardcore than Twilight - interesting twist away from the usual Vampire stories, where Vamps are attempting to meld in with the rest of the general public and become accepted into society.  At least that's how it starts out and then shit gets really crazy.)

Dollhouse (2 Seasons.  Made by the same people that did Firefly.  Loved this damn show, wish they had more seasons to it.)

Firefly (Pretty damn good.  I think I expected more because I heard so much about it, but it's still great)

...and of course, Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
Title: Re: Good series/shows!

I can wholeheartedly recommend all of these.

Drama+

The Wire - hands down best show ever made, unmatched by anything
Boardwalk Empire
Entourage - first couple of seasons are really good
Generation Kill
Rome
Spartacus: Blood & Sand
Spartacus: Gods of the Arena
Sons of Anarchy
The Shield
The West Wing

Comedy

Curb Your Enthusiasm
Community
Eastbound and Down
Futurama (animated)
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Pure Pwnage - fun little 'gamer series'
Scrubs

Sci-fi

Battlestar Galactica - the new series not the old one
Firefly
Fringe
Stargate SG-1 / Atlantis / Universe
Space Above and Beyond - if you're a fan of sci-fi you should watch this series, it has been the inspiration for many, among others the newest BSG series

Twin Peaks - created by David Lynch, not for everyone but if you like his movies it's worth checking out.

Deadwood - a HBO western drama with lots of tension and small bursts of violence.  Also people say fuck a lot.

Mr. Show - 90's sketch show with David Cross.  If you like Arrested Development, you might like this.  "Gay 'em up Rodrigo" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5i6BHBuqxE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5i6BHBuqxE)

Shogun - early 1980's NBC miniseries about a European shipwrecked in 17th century Japan.  It's really good and I highly recommend it.  They never use subtitles so you learn Japanese as the main character does.

Curb Your Enthusiasm - Good show, especially the early seasons

The Pacific - the followup to Band of Brothers, I thought the Australia episode was more devastating than some of the worst battles portrayed.

Nevermind the Buzzcocks - a music quiz show where teams of celebrities get teased by the host, it's really funny especially the seasons hosted by Simon Amstell.  There's full seasons up on youtube and here's a sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5N4Zw0c63c (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5N4Zw0c63c)

Used to watch Stargate Atlantis but Sky along with most of the good TV programmes over here got bought by Sky, i think i only saw the first half of Atlantis then well it got bought out, same with Spartacus and half of the other TV programmes.

There were two i forgot in my list (not sure on theis names, however i will describe)

V or the visitors - humanoid aliens come to Earth acting as 'Visitors' however behind the Skin of humanity is some lizard thing, it follows the doings of a rebl group and some turncoat Visitors

The second one i cant remember its name, but everyone on the planet blacked out, and woke up a few hours later and it follows the story of a cop trying to work out his vision(everyone had visions) those that didnt die, and again its about a super part of the human genetic in a few people that are rebelling to gain dominion. Fast paced, and you need to pay attention but good viewing all the same

Breaking Bad, Justified and Treme are probably the most interesting shows airing these days. Boardwalk Empire is pretty good, too. All four are on season break now, though.

True Blood (Vampire stuff not made for teenies with boobs and splatter , a little weird in the beginning though)

Are you kidding? It's basically Twilight, just with sex and gore added to hook in teenage boys as well.

And yes, The Wire was great.

The Borgias and the Tudors are both high-quality, historically-themed series.

Other than that, Rome and Game of Thrones are probably the best TV series I've seen, followed closely by Twin Peaks and Season 4 and 5 of the original Transformers animated series from the 80s ( Soundwave superior, Michael Bay inferior ).

Walking Dead and Battlestar Galactica are also pretty good, zombie survival and sci-fi respectively.

Best serie i watched this year was breaking bad, AWESOME SHOW! Didn't enjoy so much a tv show since The Sopranos.

Also watching hell on wheels, it's quite cool (western).
Other favourite series :
misfits                        quite funny and different superheroes :D
battlestar galactica     best sci-fi show evar
Rome                        awesome depiction of ancient rome
Game of Thrones       Best fantasy tv show
True Blood                 Vampires. I know, but it's quite different then the usual vamp movie/show. Also a complete modern day fantasy lore in an awesome country (lousiana's swamps are just WIN, italian doubled version is the worse thing i ever heard, so i enjoyed watching this show in english immensely :) )

Some good miniserie
Hornblower : About a british ship during napoleon's time
Samurai : A dutch ship that go to Japan
The pacific and Band of brothers:  War show by tom hanks and spielberg (same of saving private ryan but much more realistic). 'nuff said

The ones you are talking about are cheap modern teenage girl dream imitations.

A disgrace to the genre, and the characters fame.

Post by: B3RS3RK on January 08, 2012, 10:15:50 pm
Yeah I hate those gay modern vampires.

But I also yearn to be one.

Why?

Simple, you live forever and god you look so godlike to women.

If I was a vampire, I would be in pussy paradise forever.

I mean, seriously, beeing a superhero is crap, vampires get much more pussy.

Looking at the TV, you will see, Superheros mostly have ONE woman.

Vampires can get any amount they want.

I dont know why I posted this.

Anway.
Title: Re: Good series/shows!

I disagree. Just because Twilight came out doesn't mean every modern vampire tv show and movies are trash.

True blood vampires for example are really well done and the other fantasy creatures are awesome and original too.
Some modern vampire movie also was awesome, like interview with vampire and the more modern daybreakers are the first that pop up in my mind atm.

Vampire diaries yeah it's definetly teenagers material but still, is a well done serie. There are some ridicolous moments but i like to laugh about it :) (for example all the focus on the cheesy love stories, the fact everyone in the show is a supermodel and so on :))
Title: Re: Good series/shows!

At some point you hit a wall , most of the series produced just rinse and repeat old tried and true cliche scripts.
Just set in a new theme (space, gangster, lawyer, cops, family, zombie ....)

Series based on books and/or historical events tend to be better than those made up by hollywood scriptwriters imagination in my opinion.

There are many great miniseries also that gets forgotten fast after they are aired.

Warbandthemed ones not already mentioned would be:

-Pillars of the earth
-Ivanhoe

The ones you are talking about are cheap modern teenage girl dream imitations.

A disgrace to the genre, and the characters fame.

If you're into SciFi look out for Space: Above and Beyond (Space 2063 in Germany), its an older series from the 90th but its really good. Too bad it was canceled after first season.

I remember that Starship Troopers thing.

It was cool.

One episode I recall, is when one soldier goes blind, and the other guy is out of ammo or something,
and he coordinates the other by "o'clock" where to shoot.

I don't watch a lot of TV so this list will be shorter than most.

Babylon 5 (Am I really the first to mention this? Heathens.)
Firefly
Fringe (Have not watched more than a handful of episodes but they were all good.)
Walking Dead
Top Gear (BBC version--wouldn't recommend the US version)
Later with Jools Holland (Excellent music show.)
Supernatural
Archer

the first season of true blood is actually not that bad, had quite a querky different take on vampires where they come out into the open. its wierd because its not sure what its target audience is, theres sex and gore as if its for guys. but then theres also a bit of dat romance hurr.

anway I stopped watching cause it the second series shit just got ridiculous, not only are there vampires, but gods/werewolves/demons/fairies I don't even wanna know what else. they totally killed it.

Different opinions then first season was the worse for me, every episode had only sex then season 2 up started the story.

Just a hint of what you'll find in season 3, the maker of eric northman is older than jesus and he met him :D

Looks like I gotta download the first season of True blood then.

Everytime I watched it on tv, it looked Gay and shitty like twilight to me.Guess I was wrong.
Title: Re: Good series/shows!
Post by: Vexus on January 15, 2012, 07:33:18 pm
If you want that from a series better watch porn unless you want to see vampire sex. (Super speed sex)

I wouldn't put it into the same level of twilight, true blood is not on romance (Ok season 2 has bill and sookie but strange shit happen too) it starts developing in vampire/human conflicts then vs witches and then vs werewolves and vampires.

Seeing the views it had on wikipedia from season 1 to 4 shows how many people hated season 1 :)
Title: Re: Good series/shows!

Well, Porn doesnt really have thought out plots, neither do they have a budget big enough to hire really good make up artists and make nice Special effects and such.

So a TV-show with a lot of sex > Porn in terms of long Watchability(I only look at porn for 10 minutes while I fap, but I can look at a show for hours).

Plus, in shows, they have hotter girls.

That´s partly why I liked Supernatural so much. There wasn´t a single Episode without a hot bitch.

TV show with sex: Anything BBC throws in now.

I watched some of them and the makers are really in "love" with using as many sex scenes as possible.

Not that I'm against it, but it's a strange approach.  8-)

Comedy:

Spaced
The IT Crowd. Laughter track but its actually not as bad as I expected. By Father Ted/Black Books guy Graham Linehan.
Peep Show
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Extras
Red Dwarf

Other:

The Wire. Obviously. Each series feels like it goes from 1 episode to another like its all one huge movie rather than little self contained episodes. Good acting, and assumes at least some intelligence from the viewer rather than the usual lowest common denominator crap. Very realism based opposed to "goodies vs baddies". I remember Charlie Brooker did a little review, here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZ2iGYwdEi8

Farscape. Came to this recently after ignoring it for a long time as I'm not really a fan of American sci fi, they often seam like bad soap operas in space from a casual observer (still need to give some series a chance I guess). Its not bad at all though imo. It can be tongue in cheek and kinda dumb at times but I liked it. Needs to be watched from the first episode onwards rather than randomly like you can with other sci-fi's. Decent characters, generally decent acting and has some decent sci fi plots.

Firefly. Its a got a big cult following and decent reputation due to it being only 1 series long and being above average Sci Fi. You can definitely tell it was finished before its time, almost like they only just got started when it ends. There is a movie that should complete it but I haven't got around to watching it yet

Oh Im just wanting to get into this Spartacus Series someone reccomended earlier.

I just watched the first episode with a buddy of mine.

Well, I did say Sex, Violence and humor are the ingredients for a good show, but it is possible to overload it a bit.

That show is like 300 on crack.

it looks like they took the old requisites of 300, hired some muscular idiots and some good Special effect Guys, mixed that with a lot of Whores and made a show out of it.

I somehow really like it, but I wouldnt call it "Awesome".Shows like Supernatural and Chuck are awesome, this Spartacus stuff is entertaining and somehow good if you like Violence and sex, but it misses Originality and a sense other than pure Gore and Nudity.

lol it's actually really bad, especially the acting. Hate how they're making Ollie act like Bruce fucking Wayne. Even the Smallville rendition was closer to the character. I'm a big DC nut though and I'm excited about how they'll handle the characters they've already introduced and how they become the superheroes/villians they're supposed to be (Dinah & Merlyn) as well as the guest heroes like Huntress, etc. Since they can't have Batman in the show unless they want to pay a gajillion dollars, they should have Nightwing instead, damn it.

These have probably been mentioned already but "The Wire" is awesome, I put it above breaking bad, and just below GoT in my personal entertainment ranking imaginary system. Really... It's just freaking great. Do yourself a favor and watch it.

Other good ones: "The Killing" and "Orange is the new black" are both netflix originals (exclusive?) which I found pretty entertaining. (I just started watching The Killing season 3 for the second time.
Band of Brothers is a great series... Wish they had more than one season, maybe alternate stories following other vets... (last chance while they are still alive)
"The Walking dead" is kind of love/hate for me. It's entertaining but at the same time I wish there was more zombie scenes and less scenes of human drama... sometimes it feels like a soap opera with zombies on the side.
"The League" I loved... found it pretty damn hilarious and all the actors are great and synch well with eachother. If you want something funny, I'd put it up there with "Always Sunny in Philadelphia" another great comedy show...

I could think of more, but those are the good ones off the top of my head.

Started watching the original office with Ricky Gervais and Martin freeman, also good even though there are similarities. And as has been said before True Detective was just amazing, also got hooked to that nice to see some deeper TV becoming popular. And ofc can't wait for Vikings series 3, my favourite series naturally being the viking nut that I am ^^

If you can get over the title and the whole teen vampire thing, Angel and Buffy the vampire slayer are both very good. You really see where Joss Whedon honed his directing talent for firefly. (I was pretty hesitant on starting these, stuck with them, now I've finished both and I want more :P)

And for those fans of Firefly, a lot of the cast members had minor roles on Buffy/Angel at some point :p.

Can't remember if I've posted in this thread before, but here is a list of shows I liked (Ignoring really common shows that I'm certain have been posted before e.g. HIMYM)

- Psych (like the mentalist, but full of comedy, great leading duo dynamic)
- Chuck (Nice mix of comedy, drama and action)
- Arrow (Only seen the first season, very nicely done for a superhero show)
- Whitecollar (Think mentalist, different enough to watch without feeling deja vu and just as good)
- Futurama!?!
- Battlestar Galactica (Been through a lot of sci-fi stuff, this was really well done, good overarching story plots, not overly predictable)

So I'm two episodes into Manhattan (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3231564/) and it's amazing. It is a very well crafted character drama.

Rectify has to be one of the best tv shows I've seen when it comes to building and holding tension.

Under the Dome and Elementary.

A greek TV station started showing both, and it got me hooked.

The first one is about a village that it gets surrounded by a big dome, and the second one is the American version of Sherlock Holmes.

Pretty dope shows, I vouch for both.

I only watch cartoons and animated stuff

anyways, secret tip: Wakfu
great story, great animation, good voice acting and great fights, even the villains actually make sense. It´s still only available in french (or german but that one sucks), but they successfully founded an english dub on kickstarter, which they´re currently working on.

here a short scene, barely a spoiler cause it´s in the first episode (2 seasons in total); fight starts at 2:15

It's not too bad.

My suggestion:
House of Cards

Anyone have any opinions on Boardwalk Empire? Wondering if it's worth watching.

Under the dome is a great book , watched first episodes and preferred to remember the story as it was in my mind .)

I loved the first season. Madds Mikkelsen does a great job playing Hannibal. I wasn't sure what to expect but it developed very nicely over the series. I'm going to start the second one once I finish with Breaking Bad.

I've been enjoying Orange is the New Black a bit as well for something more light. The other one I've been tempted to try is American Horror Story.

Basically I'm watching all the stuff that Netflix shoves in my face  :)

Okay, I'm hyped :P Rachel McAdams, Farrell, who, according to me, is not as bad as most people think, hopefully it's gonna be on par with season one :P
