Title: I hate everything that has to do with the logistics/management of Caravans
Post by: Nessaj on December 09, 2011, 10:02:27 pm
Ever heard of check-boxes?
Transferring one set of items at a time, wtf is that. Give check-boxes and an input box for a number.

I'm literally imploding upon my self due to having to manage our Caravans all the time, not only is it a long and tedious task to gear up people 24/7 to counter bandits/attacks, since it is usually impossible to have the same persons to do the Caravan runs 24/7 (work, playing hours, blabla), then top of that you gotta make sure everything else is in order for the trade, where to go, who to trade with, they gotta be in contact with each other so they can enable incoming trades, blablabla. Also only fief owner can transfer fief stuff /puke.

ARGH! *rageface*

I hate this crap now. In the beginning I was all for trading and I still am, but with the management options Strat/CRPG gives you, I feel like slitting my wrists after having spent weeks using it..

I'm giving up my fief to who ever in Nords will take the Caravan duty, but so far no takers. WONDER WHY.

I was fine with it to begin with but now after a few weeks of handling it and all the issues related I truly hate it with an enormous rageface.

It is various annoying factors, that combined, are reason enough for sebuku.

Less derailing here, we're talking about how setting up Caravans is a colossus unnecessary amount of time.

Anyway, trust me, I hate anime, with a vengeance, can't stand any sort of anime, manga, all that stuff, at all.

My avatar was drawn by the Nord house resident caricaturist, Munin, and I use his creation proudly, I did not have any part in her concept.

But, concerning management of caravans, i do it myself. Not hard to do, the hard part is getting the people who have goods to get them to me.

Really I think chadz should consider some sort of API model of software development.

If there was a web API then there might be some takers on developing a prettier client.  Technically we could do this now by hijacking the regular browser calls but I would think a real interface would make things better all around.  e.g., an API call that accepts transfer requests -- provide it a name, an item and an amount and it will do the transfer.  Then someone makes a client that can accept multiple requests with a friendly interface, perhaps even totalling up things like this many crates each side will end up with, and then call the API to do the transfers invisibly to the user.

Take this for an example:
http://potbs.armeagle.nl/map-antigua.php

This is for Pirates of the Burning Sea.  The developers did not make this website.  It's fan-based.  The developers simply created an API that lets anyone query the server to ask things like "who owns Havana", "what are the unrest levels at Havana", "what does Havana produce", etc.  Some fans created this lovely website based off of the API calls that the game developers exposed.

Here's the writeup from the Developers about obtaining access to their API and a bit about it:
http://www.burningsea.com/wiki/index.php/Data_API

Might give chadz some ideas.  Basically he can create his own fugly, basic web interface based on his own APIs but now there's a strong possibility that someone else could work on a prettier version, using those same APIs.

Developer API is a great idea IMO, especially since a lot seem to be willing to contribute to the mod in various ways.

Here's how a Caravan goes. Maybe it's easier for people with many fiefs /w multiple owners producing.

Remind you that I'm not just talking about sending one guy from point A to B, e.g. you produce goods, go somewhere and sell. I'm talking about actual trading, where you swap goods with someone across the map.

1: Talk to factions to setup trade.
2: Find 1/2 characters to send out
3: Figure out how many troops is needed to carry the specific crates on the caravans
4: Transfer each set of items manually to gear up the caravan
5: Check with everyone if they have the right speed, weight, etc to make sure you haven't transferred too much
6: Tell your guys where they need to go and what to do
7: Teach people how trading works since most never did it
8: Make sure people connect and do the trade, usually hard since everyone is on at very different hours
9: Repeat all the time since people have to dump their troops at least (for less upkeep) into the town, usually dumps gear too.
