You need to be more specific. Better at what, melee, ranged? If melee, are you 1h+shield, 2h or pole?

It requires different skill to play, but in my opinion less.
Just because you suck at 2h at first doesn't mean you should give up on it. What you need to practice first is blocking.

Best way to start practicing blocking is first with tutorial bots in Warband Native, then on duel servers (you could also try dueling bots on Nditions native duel server). Good blocking will get you far and will let you experiment more with attacks.

And yes, 1h+shield is easier to play than 2h+pole, imo. Good beginner build for 2h would be 21/18 with 7ps and 6ath, 6wm, rest in IF or 24/15 with 8ps, 5ath, 5wm, rest in IF.

Depends how low you are.. but yes. Fighting someone who is lvl 30 when you're only lvl 15 is hard and pretty much impossible for new players.

That's because the combat system is much more complex and takes a lot of practice to get used to. But if you follow what I said and have some talent you can become good quite fast :)

Mouse. Same for blocking, although some prefer movement keys.

Yeah, movekey blocking/attacking makes you really stale.

Also: If you want to learn melee, go pure noshield melee.

Don't bring a ranged backup weapon (if you spend 3 mins shooting every round, well, those 3 mins could have been used to melee), use a balanced build and sensible gear (i.e don't go full plate+str build+stupidly long weapon and spam. Also don't use a pike), spend a lot of time on the duel servers and read guides/ask the experienced players.

Don't have much time to write right now (if you haven't noticed), but this is basically what I did and I caught up to the vets pretty fast.

Oh, and don't forget to have fun :p

If i would be first generation 2H again i would take this build:
21/18-2H:
(click to show/hide)

It has decent damage, and good hp so you can take some hits while not being to slow because of 6 athletics.

I would get a armor between 5000-8000 Gold + some cheap gear for foot and hands + a medium helmet (around 4k-6k)
As weapon i would take for example Sword of War or Two Handed Sword but there are a lot of other options (cheap and good options would be dadao but you would lack training in thrust then for the beginning).

I would recommend you to lvl up on siege until you got at least 6PS and 5 ath. (because you will get more fights there)
Then i would go to duel servers for a half hour everytime you play. Perhaps get into a clan
to find some people to show you the tricks.

You will see how playing on duel will improve your skills fast.
Ask other people to show you some things. There are always some nice guys
that take some time to show you something. (turn into your hits, lolstab, feints etc.)
Watch other players and look how they are fighting (after you managed to learn blocking *g* that should be first).
Try to do the same moves.

I played over 3 months until i decided to give duel server a try.
At the beginning my clanmembers always fooled me cause i couldnt block overheads ;)
Today im decent.

The main way to get better is to just play, a lot. I think most people probably struggled when they first started (the training NPC's in M&B .807 use to own me), but over time, you get used to it.

Jumping into cRPG has got to be very discouraging to someone who has not taken the time to play single player and the original Mount & Blade. Many of us have spent many hours (like me, should have an residential address in the game ).
Just don't be discouraged and have fun is key  :D

Pretty much all of us who played the original Mount and Blade got into Warband in its early stages. The skill level back then was completely different. I remember me and a whole server being completely amazed when two guys had like a 20 sec duel with about ten blocks. I was stunned, back then that felt like watching someone solve a rubix cube in ten seconds.

Most of us slowly increased in skill as the general skill increased. Jumping into cRPG now as a complete newb must be a total nightmare. The average skill is so high these days.

As you started out as a 2h I assume you like the class. Just bite the bullet and keep playing as a 2h.

Wait lemme copy pasta something, I've typed this already

If I were you I would just bite the bullet and pick 2h/polearm without a shield to start with. Then you should fire up native and practice blocking with the bots.

Set combat speed to slower first and fight the novices, block them until you can confidently block the highest ranked dude, cause hes also the fastest.

Set combat speed to medium and repeat. If you want to be all cool set combat speed to fastest and repeat. Also spar with them a little, practice attacking back after a block and experiment with mouse settings. (make sure you have manual blocking enabled)

Then create a skip the fun character. Try this build (you can also do polearm if you like):

Strength: 21
Agility: 18
Hit points: 66
Skills to attributes: 8
Ironflesh: 5
Power Strike: 7
Athletics: 6
Weapon Master: 5
Two Handed: 146

Get into the duel server on cRPG and duel. Get a heavy bastard sword and some light armour. First try to block a lot, just doing simple attacks back. When blocking goes better, attack more, maybe try feinting and hold attacks. Still, most important is that you get blocking down.

After several hours I hope you get the hang of it, you might learn it very quickly or very slowly. Don't get discouraged when you'll die a lot at first, it is the only way to quickly close the gap with the average player, who is pretty good these days.

Then try to get into battle, most importantly is you try to survive and observe, the quicker you get how to be efficient in battle the better. If you do die quickly spectate someone high up the boards, he probably knows his stuff. Spectate good players from different classes to see which one seems fun.

Why do I recommend going shiedless rather than a shielder? A shield might break, you need to be able to block when that happens. I personally find being a shielder a lot less fun than being a shieldless meleer.

If you would start as a 1h you would have much less understanding of how people fight, understanding your opponents is very important (also why you should try being a shielder in the near future). When you have a shield you press RMB and you block, you would be less forced to duel and get better cause you have easy blocking.

When you dont have a shield you'll be constantly reminded of how much you suck and will therefore be pushed much harder to improve and thus improve quicker.

When you think you have a good idea of how combat works and have taken a good look around the battlefield at the different classes you should start your main character, which should not be skip the fun. 21/18 is a pretty good build for any melee class, judge by your melee experience with the skip the fun character if you want more power or speed.

Judging from your post I thought you prefer melee, if you are a determined horselover or ranged lover this was a waste and you should go with that.
