Title: Shielder (you can call it turtle) build - help me and discuss!
Post by: Dravic on February 12, 2011, 11:03:58 pm
Level 30 (4 420 577 xp)
Strength: 12
Agility: 27
Hit points: 47
Converted: 8
Ironflesh: 0
Power Strike: 4
Shield: 9
Athletics: 5
Riding: 0
Horse Archery: 0
Power Draw: 0
Power Throw: 0
Weapon Master: 5
One Handed: 1
Two Handed: 1
Polearm: 148
Archery: 1
Crossbow: 1
Throwing: 1

Basically, I want to be Shielder (big S), not shielder. Quick explanation: Steel shield + 9 shield skill - can get A LOT of hits. "The shield is the armor", or something like that. I am thinking about putting wpfs in polearms, so i can "roleplay" hoplite - well, awlpike with shield, even if it has penalty, with 150~~ wpf and 27 agi will be very fast, i hope. Or i can switch to long hafted spiked mace when i wish to, too. Or i can put them into 1h and use pickaxe, but i have no idea what to chose.

Discuss and eventually give me tips.

EDIT:

Or i can go for such a build, better footwork and attack speed overall:

Level 30 (4 420 577 xp)
Strength: 12
Agility: 24
Hit points: 47
Unused skill points: 1
Converted: 2
Ironflesh: 0
Power Strike: 4
Shield: 8
Athletics: 8
Riding: 0
Horse Archery: 0
Power Draw: 0
Power Throw: 0
Weapon Master: 8
One Handed: 1
Two Handed: 1
Polearm: 173
Archery: 1
Crossbow: 1
Throwing: 1

Remember that 4 PS means you will glance a lot on a moving target. Also, most polearms get a serious damage nerf when used in one hand. I consider them only support builds, because they are very easy to block. I think it would be better going pick/hammer with such a build. Also, with 9 shield skill, the Huscarl's should last almost forever, and it might be a better choice than the steel shield, because it protects your sides better. But you will see. One of the problems will be overload. With str 12 and WM 5 you can't really carry a lot of things, and the better shields already are pretty heavy. So you will be stuck with low level armor or be constanly overloaded and thus, slowed down a lot. Because of this, I'd recommend this build instead:

I reccomend the war spear with a low PS because it gives no penalty. I would also suggest going to at least 5 ps. Maybe 6 if you want

You want to be quick with just a shield not much else armour wise? go the second build you'll want the extra ath for foot work, problem with awlpike and sheild even though good rp value its very easy to block because when you have shield on you only have thrust attack, good for support bad for 1 on 1 and if the shield is the only armour you have, taking you're shield off to fight is a bit of a bad idea :D

If this is the kind of build you want, you would probably be better off with 1handed and use you're foot work to get in and out of attack range, if you're set on the idea of hoplite remember even hoplites carried a sword too :D great for supporting team mates and keeping away them pesky cav though. with the second build you could maybe go hybrid with the second build you could go:

So i should take 1h + shield instead of polearm + shield?

EDIT

Then maybe this build:

Level 30 (4 420 577 xp)

Strength: 6
Agility: 30
Hit points: 41
Converted: 2
Ironflesh: 0
Power Strike: 2
Shield: 10
Athletics: 10
Riding: 0
Horse Archery: 0
Power Draw: 0
Power Throw: 0
Weapon Master: 7
One Handed: 164
Two Handed: 1
Polearm: 1
Archery: 1
Crossbow: 1
Throwing: 1

+ Niuweidao, Steel Shield/Buckler (cant decide for now, will try both), Bamboo spear for getting rid of cavalry.

Well with that your gonna be bouncing on armored players and not doing much damage with 2PS

with 2 powerstrike i dare say you will never be able to kill most people, you will bounce far too often and even when you hit will take 6-7hits to kill guys. both of you're original builds were better then the latter.

So that would be final build:

Level 30 (4 420 577 xp)

Strength: 9
Agility: 27
Hit points: 44
Converted: 2
Ironflesh: 0
Power Strike: 3
Shield: 9
Athletics: 9
Riding: 0
Horse Archery: 0
Power Draw: 0
Power Throw: 0
Weapon Master: 8
One Handed: 154
Two Handed: 1
Polearm: 1
Archery: 1
Crossbow: 105
Throwing: 1

Niuweidao, Steel shield/Buckler, (hopefully Well Made) Light Crossbow, Steel Bolts x1.

You're still not going to hurt anyone with your sword with that build. Remember the sword deals cut damage.

The lowest you can go without being horribly gimped is 4 PS and only if you combine that with a steel pick.

Headshots+fast weapon=no glances. Even with 2 ps. I had a similar build like that, tried to avoid heavily armoured people but when I had to fight I'd glance on everything but head shots.

How about

Polearm: 113

And

One Handed: 150?

Because I would like to get rid off horses a bit with bamboo spear/pike, so I'd put some WPFs in Polearms, or will i be able to stop a horse with pike/bamboo spear even without WPFs?

Stopping a horse is independant of wpf. Stab it in the chest it stops. If you enjoy the hoplite style of play though, go right ahead and have polearms in there, just switch to your sidearm when things get too close.

u dont need polearm wpf to stop horses. I end up putting 10-20 at 31.. just rest-points.
