Title: Why dont randoms play as merc in strategus?
Post by: Camaris on November 12, 2011, 07:14:21 pm
Right now a village defense with 10 defenders....
This is a sign that there are not enough rewards to get peoples into the fights even
if they dont fight for a specific faction.....

Saturday 19:00 and 10 defenders... thats a joke.

I think its the best to give all archer-factions the villages for free.
So we dont have wast our time with boring and lame battles.

But seriously, the Claimwars are only one big fail in this round.

I think it's more that 90% of the community is unaware that they CAN join neutral village defense battles.  I see lots of clan tags in Strategus but very few of those joe-blow-random-dudes that are always on battle or siege.  Even with no money or XP, it's still fun.  If nothing else, it's a novelty and you can be happy in the knowledge that you are pissing some clan off by fighting against them.

What might be amusing would be if there was some way for the server MOTD (the message you see when you log into the server) could automatically show upcoming significant battles.  Say, any battle with more than 1000 total tickets gets displayed there.  Instead of "Welcome to the NA server!  Don't be douchebags!" or whatever, you'd see:
"Upcoming battles...
Swinging_Dicks vs Mechin in 3hr 20m [neutral battle, all welcome!]
Drunk_Bastards vs Mud_Eaters in 6hr 4m
...log into c-rpg.net, select your main character and click the Battle tab to join!"

Maybe some sort of script could do this every 30m or so -- just poll for battles and update the motd.

The real damage you did was using both of those construction sites for no reason. That was just downright painful to watch!

No XP or GOLD = People don't care.

Sure it is still loads of fun (if its an equal battle = skills decide, not gear/troops) but everything else comes first then, especially if you're a newcomer or relatively casual to the game, why spend an hour on a Strat match for nothing (except making "enemies" of those you sign against for no actual good reason) - I'd much rather be spending time making gold, grinding heirlooms or playing with a buddy.

Fix the XP + GOLD (any sort of neutral fief payment) and things will return to normal. However a lot of the map has already been taken - almost free - by half the factions on the map, so the damage is already done in this area, however as long as it could be fixed prior to people taking Castles/towns then it might rectify the damages in the long run.

Everyone should have to fight a full village of people.

If XP/Gold wouldn't be enough to get people back into the neutral fief defenses then perhaps neutral fief defenders should be listed anonymously, both in-game and on the web site, you'd only be able to see if you're accepted or not. I'm sure some people can spot play-styles, faces, and what not, but it should still 100% ensure that all fiefs are well defended. Perhaps allow players to 'tag' whether they want to be listed anonymously or not, thus allowing factions to still call for organized defenses.

Some more visibility in terms of 'Strat battles' would be good too.

Very good idea, could be even better if a pink message appears on official servers 5mins before and at start of big Strat battles.
