Title: What's the reason there are no small balancing patches?
Post by: Meow on February 10, 2011, 03:42:44 pm
So i was wondering why there are no small balancing patches in between the big script patches?

Somehow it doesn't make sense to me to play week after week with the same balancing when there are clearly some things that are unbalanced which can be solved by changing data in a single file.

Like the whole polearm line where the hafted blade's outclasses the elegant poleaxe with half the str requirement and 1/5th the price.
Or the Horseback Barmace...

Or throwing and the 2h thrust (although those might need a script fix).

I mean sure there is alot of whining but i'd rather have a better balanced crpg before strategus goes live which most likely will require more than just one balancing patch.

So is there any reason for not releasing multiple small patches with less time in between?

If there is a whole bunch of different things "OP" Then there are a whole bunch of options for players to use until the games next patch.

all those things you listed are really good in the right hands, but nothing is as overpowered right now as manual blocking, and weapon change speeds.

The reason is because the one in charge of balance is a 16 years old girl quite unfortunately.

I've always wondered this. Not that I'm not grateful. But in a case where a dev states something is going to be changed in 3 months as part of a larger patch, why not just do it right then by changing a number in an .ini or something?

Because it would require everyone including servers to update their version via a new DL, it's a hassle.

Aren't many of these kinds of little changes made server side? So chadz can do a ninja edit and we then only know when our beloved OP weapon suddenly seems level with others?  :D

short version: because changes to items are no minor change, but major changes (->break the compatibility->everyone needs to redownload a new client). That has technical reasons. Has something to do with the items changing IDs.
