The website shows shields as having a body armour stat. But when equipping shields ingame it shows as "resistance" - I'm hoping someone is able to enlighten me as to what this stat is and what it actually does etc.
Thanks in advance.

body armor of shield is resistance
resistance is amount of damage shield absorbs without getting actual damage

Axe ignores shield armor right?
-
not sure about that
game manual says
BONUS VERSUS SHIELDS: some weapons like axes are very effective at hacking apart enemy's shield and can reduce it to splinters in only a few hits. If the weapon has that ability, it will be indicated

Is there a hidden mechanic for shield armor? Or does it reduce it be the stated amount on every hit? Eg, the Steel Shield would need to take 70 or more damage to actually be damaged? (as it has 69 resistance)

Axe ignores shield armor right?
If bonus vs shield weapons just ignored shield armor they would be vastly superior to regular weapons at breaking high armor shields (i.e. steel shields) and would be marginal better than regular weapons at breaking low armor, high hit point shields (i.e. board shields.) From my experience, bonus vs shield weapons break board shields in 1/2 to 1/3 of the number of hits that regular weapons of similar damage require. It might be that bonus vs shield weapons ignore shield armor, but they seem to do significantly more damage in addition to that.

Maby the game rolls from half to full amount of resis and decrease dmg for given amount, like with armors res?
