I don't see a problem with it being player driven, to be an effective griefer you need a high lvl char, if you ruin your reputation with griefing, its your problem. If you cant remember names of griefers, your problem too. But stuff like banning players because they picked up a shield while duelling is just over the top (did happen).
(Only obvious stuff like interrupting duells should still be punished, as this part of griefing can not be avoided by the players)

The problem with that is that it's kind of hard to remember everyone who was behaving like an ass.
Also, when someone goes to the duel server maybe he wants to duel "properly", and not be griefed in every possible way just because he didn't know the other guy likes doing it.

Is this really a problem as it is now?

Oh noes the level 43 sword'o'tears nub one-shot you as soon as the duel started! What will you do?

Respawn in 5 seconds, don't duel him again.

Oh noes the forum guy called Rhaelys is unable to read!

Seriously, what does this have to do with breaking rules? I'm pretty sure there's no rule against being one-hit killed.

I think there should be no hugging. Most people back up at the start of a duel, unless you see the opponent with some sort of ranged weapon.

No switching weapons is also a good idea. I hate when someone pulls out a shield on me when they get low HP.

The only thing that really bugs me is when someone pulls out throwing / whatever ranged at duel start.

I agree on the no switching weapons. About the throwing bruce: If they use only one weapon honestly i think it's okay. I for exmple used throwing lances and switched to their secondary option. Not good for dueling though if you want to try

Eh, don't see the problem with it just being administrated in exactly the same way as it is now (and like pretty much all duel servers ever.)

2/3 do not like mean admins ruining their duel-griefing expierience. Thats good, if you cant handle getting griefed once a day, your problem. Admins cant degrief you, only give you revenge. If you feel someone lamed you, lame back in the next duel (or do not accept it)

So I have to keep a little notebook of everyone who breaks standard duel rules and then refer to it whenever I accept a challenge from another player.

If we're going to allow people to change weapons etc. during duels, that's fine as long as we're given an option to cancel a duel by putting weapon away or something.

What rules are we talking about then? I thought there was some duel server "etiquette" that was not being respected.

Rules. (http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php/topic,143173.msg3439335.html#msg3439335) They might change soon, though.

A side note:

When is the duel server operational again? It was on for one day and then stopped working again. Bug testing?

Anyway, back on topic. Rules should be enforced somewhat, but it's up to the people dueling to act decent and not be a douchebag just because they can. I personally try to be as nice as possible to new players. As in, I don't face hug and spam them to death the moment timer hits "1..." as I've seen a lot of people do.

BTW regarding xp/upkeep, will that be removed from duel servers?

3) No following or face-hugging the other duelist before the duel countdown has ran out - either hold your starting position or back-pedal if you want some distance between you and your opponent

That's what I was referring to, the following/charging of the 2h thrust 1-hit gibber even with backpedaling.
