If you want to play make sure on steam you goto "Library" Tab. Below it is a drop-down menu go-to "Tools" and make sure you have Source SDK, Source SDK 2006, and Source SDK 2007 downloaded so you can play.

Beta testers say it is different than L4D, this has more teamwork to it and etc. But all to their own, atleast try it.

I thought the F2P version of TF2 was limited and missing some features like mod support. If this is false, then I need to berate a friend.

It allows for some mods ToD. Like Zombie Panic Source/Empires. You can search google for supported mods for F2P TF2.

Couldn't connect to either of the 2 servers that were up at the time. So I downloaded Zombie Panic and played that instead.

Zombie Panic Source is so fucking epic :D
But this one looks great too, any first impressions yet?

Lots of potential. Clearly a beta though, with all it's bugs. Hopefully the next patch will remove the random (and quite frequent) crashes that some players get.
The hit-boxes are quite fucked up. This is supposed to be fixed in the next patch.
It's damn challenging. I highly recommend playing this with friends over teamspeak or the ingame voip.

Change log for the upcoming 1.01 patch:
-Cleared out config_default.cfg except binds (fixes crash when changing maps)
-Fixed godmode when mp_friendlyfire is 0
-Rewrote shaders to be more efficient and prevent crashing
-Fixed viewmodel particles (and flashlight) appearing wrong to an observer
-Tweaked default values of map length, overlord despawn timeout
-Player names should now always appear above the player's head
-Friendly fire damage has been reduced (which is now a convar, sv_friendly_fire_factor)
-Players will not incorrectly turn now if killed by another player (only if killed by headshot by another player)
-Load screen should now show the background for the correct map
-Fixed phalanx bottle orientation on hip
-Fixed phalanx bottle not being removed after being used (causing the floating pills)
-Screen shader effects can be disabled by turning off "nmrih_screenspace" ConVar
-Fixed sv_realism damage
-Decreased cl_npc_interp to 0.1
-Made mp_timelimit 0 mean infinite time on the map
-V and MOUSE3 swapped in config_defaults (VoiceChat = V & Mouse3 = Bash)
-Auto kick players that are idle for x amount of time (set by convar, typing / navigating ui does not count towards activity)
-Implemented Vote Kick / Vote Ban systems
-Added brush entity (func_ff_blocker) that prevents friendly fire for players inside of it
-Fixed two female zombie sounds that were looping
-All zombie hitboxes have been rebuilt
-Lump allocation errors should now be fixed
(don't forget to turn off something along the lines of "show maps" in the server browser, otherwise you will only see 2-3 servers)

Don't download this until like 5 patches from now, it's currently god awful. Assuming you can find a server that doesn't have a teammate spawn killing your whole team, the actual game is almost funny in it's 'badness'.
