Decided to start a new thread for this here:
New annoyance. Received the message today, but when I'd been shot from my horse. The crafting bonus didn't apply to my horse and so it lowered the skill even more because I wasn't riding it at that moment. In my opinion this is a major flaw as cav fairly often gets dehorsed. Why does the skill not to apply to your starting inventory? Rather than what you have on you at that exact moment.
In the case of horses, this will make it a lot harder to receive the bonus. It certainly won't effect any other class as much.

I'm not sure it didn't apply to your horse because it was dead. I got the message a bunch and there are lots of items I can't craft, even though I know I was wearing them when I got the message. I think it is simply broken in regards to some items.
I got the message a few times on my gimmick gear load out which is leather cap, leather apron, rus cav boots, leather gloves and the shitty 1h meat cleaver. I can craft the leather cap, apron and boots but not the gloves or cleaver.

Remember the -1 for everything you are not wearing. Would turn some of the stuff you've only gotten a few times down to 0.

I had the other day when I was getting ready for a duel. I had nothing. And was only wearing my leather gloves... :D

Fun story: I stole a Large War Horse in the middle of battle and now currently have 2 smithing skill in large war horses. But I've yet to buy any armored horses for any of my characters. This amuses me

I thought it did. I get smithing skill on siege shields, even though I've already thrown them down at the start of the battle.

That's because you still "carry" it after you threw it. If you got, for example, a sword, shield and a bag of javelins. If you throw all the javelins, but doesn't pick up anything new. You can still see the javelin bag on your back. Same thing with ladders since they are also throwing weapons. Also apply to arrow/bolt quivers. If you pick up something, on the other hand, then the bag is "dropped" and you don't get for it.

so if u apply the same throw mechanism to horses, it ends up acting like the throwing weps, that would fix this issue.
cus u still pay repair for them horsies, so it's not fair that you can't get the same chance for smithing skill.

hmmm, dunno if there is any "ammo" box for horses... BUT WAIT! what about instead of SPAWNING on a horse, you can get a throwable item "horse spawner" Would cost exactly the same, give you craft skill AND be usable with the equipment chest! Win win win! Only drawback are for those of us (like me) who already fill all the slots. But I think I could give up my dagger for this :D
