Hello folks. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'll give it a try.
Lately I've been playing a lot of Warhammer and Total War and I figured that it could be great fun having a battle-event with regiments. Say it's a 60 v 60 battle then each side could field 3 regiments. Each regiment would consist of players wearing matching armor and wielding matching weapons say a sword'n'board regiment or a regiment of halberdiers. STF-alts could come in very handy as it would be possible to have a regiment of players with the exact same builds and roughly the same gear. Each regiment would also have some sort of leader, obviously, p'raps using slightly better weapons and wearing better armor to stand out from the rest. The commander would also be in touch with the other commanders via TS or something like that.
It would, of course, be important to move as one in the regiments, so this calls for some sort of discipline and training, and it would be necessary to find the right players but I think it could be great fun to do something like this.
To make this interesting and possible we could of course have interested clans sign up bringing a regiment each or something like that. That would also make sure that we've got men we can rely on to take it seriously and not fuck around.
It'd be the most fun if the regiments had to stay in their formations and not just disperse and go berserk as soon as the enemy's within reach but I guess it'll take a lot from the individual player to stay in formation when there's fighting going on.
Lemme hear what you think.

Sounds fascinating. Reminds me of the Line Battles of M&M.

MILITIAMAN, REPORTING IN!

It sounds very good, I think its going to be very fun if we try it out.
-
Why not ???
I think that every event in crpg is a good idea.

Just organize it. Get the TS setup. Make sure the regiment leaders are admins so the banhammer takes care of the grievers. I'd be there as a halberdier.

Imo cult of mithras training has shown that it requires a lot to fight in a formation. It ain't something I believe will work with just one event.
Sry to be nay say'er.
If it becomes an event I am quite sure that we can field a regiment of Mithras Soldiers.

Its lime the line battle in M&M mod. It requires A LOT of training to move as something else than a blob formation. It will be even harder to move as a square-even formation than a 1 or 2 men line, like people do in M&M.
A cRPG line battle would be awesome and historically acurate if we use clans.
Clans are Great Households or Mercenary companies. Each one provide an infantry regiment working as a single units, their archers are going all together in an archer line, and the cav form a Knight company.
awesome awesome

sounds a bit like the multi clan tourny which was uber awesome

Could be interesting, we havent had an event for a long time. So this could be great :)

How much gold should each clan be allowed to spend on their regiment then? I was thinking it could be quite cool with some regiments employing rather cheap equipment rather than the usual hordes of plate armored knights since we're focusing on the regiments as whole units and not the individual players.
Here's an example of a rather light soldier.
Risen Footman
Strength: 24
Agility: 15
Hit points: 73
Skills to attributes: 8
Ironflesh: 7
Power Strike: 8
Shield: 0
Athletics: 4
Riding: 0
Horse Archery: 0
Power Draw: 0
Power Throw: 0
Weapon Master: 4
One Handed: 1
Two Handed: 1
Polearm: 138
Archery: 1
Crossbow: 1
Throwing: 1
Aketon: 588
Ankle boots: 153
Kettle helmet: 2107
Leather gloves: 289
Military scythe: 3336
Dagger: 260
In total: 6733

If you want some experience from an event pretty similar to yours, check this out:

This was the huge multiclan tournament I made.

Yeah fighting in a formation is ridiculously hard and not all that effective, in the case of such an event the team that breaks formation the most wins, which is probably not desirable. Fighting in a formation, especially with the earlier active attacks, takes a lot of the individual's effectiveness away, without enhancing the effectiveness of the group.

The goal isn't increased effeciency :P It's just s'posed to be fun :O
