Title: All Thine Hard Work: Bug or Feature?
Post by: Slamz on October 16, 2011, 03:10:48 pm
Thought about putting this in the bug forum but I guess it could also be a feature.

Whenever you get "All Thine Hard Work" you get +3 points to every item you have on you.

If you are carrying 4 Masterwork Nordic Champion Swords (you can never have too many swords!) then one "Hard Work" = +12 points to that one item.

And yes, I verified this.  I had two stacks of throwing axes and got +6 to throwing axes in one message.

Argument for "It's a feature":
Whatever you want to pay the upkeep for, you can gain skill in.  If that means carrying 4 swords around, so be it.  Not really a big deal anyway.

Argument for "it's an oversight/bug":
It's biased in favor of weapons, especially 1 slot weapons.  You can't carry 4 Huskarl shields or 4 helmets or 4 two-handers so it will be easier to get cheap one-handers than cheap two-handers.  Also, do we really want to encourage people to run around with 4 swords just for this reason?  How many of you are logging in right now with 4 shields because you really want to try for +12 on Elite Cavalry Shield in one sitting?  Maybe you should be limited to +3 points per item per "Hard Work" regardless of how many of that item you are carrying.

So thats why people have a zillion skill in bodkins, they get it twice.

I'd say it was unintended negligence on devs side.

I hope it gets fixed, it doesn't seem right that it works like that.

I don't really care if it's removed, but at the same time, I don't think people should be paying upkeep twice for the same item either. I figured this was somewhat intended cause upkeep works in the same fashion.

Yeah, I noticed it with my arrows aswell.
I do think that it shouldn't be this way.

I think it makes sense, since upkeep is per item.  However it needs balancing due to the slots.

I would reduce the bonus for weapons to 2 and then times it by the slot value of the weapon.  So a 2 slot weapon would gain 4 points whilst a 1 slot weapon would only gain 2.  For armour I would then make the bonus 4 points instead of 3 just to keep it more balanced.  That way everybody always gets allocated the same number of total points regardless of what weapons they carry so long as they are using up all their slots.  Overall people will end up with a few more points than before so the discount values will need adjusting down a bit after this change.

The only other thing I would say is that you shouldn't gain the crafting bonus whilst below the upkeep threshold.  I have 2 reasons for this
1)  If you gain the crafting bonuses whilst only level 15 or below you'll likely not be wearing all the gear you actually want to be crafting.
2)  Meanwhile people that respec to avoid upkeep will always get the crafting bonus at a time when they wearing their standard gear.

Seems like an error. It biases ranged and 1h over every other class. I doubt they meant to do that.

I don't know if it's THAT big of a deal since chadz changed the system to result in diminishing returns.

2 points: 35.46%
4 points: 39.59%
8 points: 45.47%
14 points: 50.86%
17 points: 52.87%
23 points: 56.17%

So someone with 50 points probably has like a 59.9%.  Not really a huge improvement over 23 points.

The biggest "abuse", I think, would be going from 0 points to 12 points.  That's a big improvement.  12 -> 24 is a much smaller improvement and 24 -> 36 is probably a waste.

Though I suppose if every point is a chance to produce (as it was under the old system) then someone with 36 points could be mass producing, so there is that.
