Title: Cavalry armies
Post by: Gash on October 14, 2011, 03:20:20 pm
Suggestion:  If a player has X amount of troops and buys a horse for every troop - this army is considered mounted and travels faster on the map.

Discuss.

LOL, have you seen how much horses cost now and how much gold production has been decreased.  How will anyone afford horses for every man in their army except for 5-10 man "armies" which already move faster than larger armies.

The cost of horses is realistic-though before you give me your ''ITSNOTABOUTREALISM111!!11!!!!'' business; I believe its a good idea, so we don't have hordes of Cavalry plaguing the battlefield.

I like the idea.
Small elite, well equiped armies > hordes of peasants.

I thought it might unbalance stuff, but then again, why not try it.

When you have
horses_count >= troops_count
and
horses_count >= goods_count
then
speed*2
edit(EXCEPT SUMPTER HORSE)

Should be active within a few hours, along with some other changes.

chadz,

why leave sumpter horses out of it?

They are after all just that - pack mules. shitty in battle, but might actually see use because of this.

And its realistic - horses don't sprint on long voyages, its all about stamina, which all horses have plenty in terms of less resting and higher avg. speed.

this will definitely make things more interesting, but shouldnt this speed be negated or reduced in certain terrains; forest, hills, mountains, etc?

Yeah - for now I added it just in a simple way, will think of a more sophisticated method.

Woot finally. Now GK's armies will actually get somewhere quickly. Time to craft 500 champion coursers :)

Why not make it so that the player needs riding skill aswell.
I know its the troops that use the horses, but just to make it more difficult to use/abuse.
Or if you need a "reason", lets say the group rides faster under command that is skilled with horses.

Maybe riding skill 3 is a base value to use it (aka Rouncey difficulty), and skill above that gives faster movement, to a certain point.
Arabian warhorse needs riding 7 so above that it no longer matters, that been the cap value.

Apropo, this might give clans a reason to recruit cav players. Up untill now cav has been and still is the least desired players for clans to have, strategus wise that is.

Why not allow sumpter horse to count only for the ># goods calculation and not for the troops one? Isn't that basically what the sumpter horse is shitty, its a pack animal not a war horse.

Maybe make the sumpter horse its own category and only allow it a 1.5 speed bump for goods caravans.

I think the number of trade goods you can carry should be based solely on the number of horses in your army. (Unless troop count is > than horse count, than use troops to calculate the room for trade goods.)

The speed of the caravan should be something like (1 + 0.Horse Speed) to determine the speed bonus for the player. Use the slowest horse the person has when calculating the bonus IF horses > troop count.

So stumper would give 133% increase to speed, and courser 146% increase to speed. Also factor in horse heirlooms and you could see some interesting little setups for caravans.

Hope this might help you out chadz.
