Title: Shields protect your back.
Post by: Hrafn on October 14, 2011, 12:24:51 pm
Woudnt it be nice if shields gave you protection on back? The way it protects you when you block with it, or at least give bonus to armor against melee  (like it gives right now against ranged).
1) This will add another element in character customization, u can have back protection, but it will reduce movement speed due to weight. There will be more sense having points in shield while playing polearm/2hander. And we will see a bit less of unshielded 2handers.
2) Also its realistic.

It was like that on the past for arrows (can't remember exact patch).

I'm against it, 2 handers would all be plagued with cheap no-requirements shields at their backs to save them from 2-3 shots from behind.

Well it already protects you from arrows(with high shield skill though). I am talking mainly about melee. And it can be breakable on back as well, so cheap shields will be almost useless.

And make melee more tankable?

No. Thanks.

i agree its in native and works well. all though in reality shields worn on the back were ordinary as by the time the arrow was slowed significantly it was inside the wearer unlike when worn on the arm.

I suggest that they are easily penetrated and only reduce damage if they are a cheap shield

A shield on your back still protects you from arrows.

The shield resistance + 10 adds directly to your body armor if you get shot in the back.

So, if you had 40 body armor to begin with and a steel shield on your back that would be 40 + 76 + 10, so you'd have a whooping 126 body armor to arrows when shot in the back.

I agree, it's more realistic.

And it's not fun to be shot from behind, anyway.

I would like to see it tested and see what happens as a result. Its more realistic and it could work. The wieght of shields would have to go up a little though.

I thought Pavise Crossbowmen only brought shields to stick them into the ground, like rudimentary siege shields. Not carry them on the back while firing/reloading.

And for the argument's sake, I don't see how it would be possible for them to jump around with a heavy polearm and swinging it simultaneously.

There are records of doing both with pavise shields, if I'm correct.

Look for some videos of Skallagrimm on Youtube showing Viking combat. A shield on the back could be a life saver for someone using a two hander. Also look at the examples of crossbowmen etc.

Ofcourse it should make you slower which would be the downside. And it would take up some equipment space. But it was definately used in history so should be intresting to have in cRPG.

So signed.

They would have turned around whilst reloading their crossbows, which would have taken some time. They then turn back around, shoot, repeat.

You completely misunderstood my point, and I wasn't even talking about Pavise crossbowmen. It was just a comparison.

On one hand, I dunno why people would want a 25% speed reduction from carrying a shield, but on the other hand for game balance reasons there's already enough clowns running around in heirloomed heavy plate who are almost immune to slashing weapons and arrows, and it doesn't really add much to game to let them stack on even more protection.
