Title: input on 1st shielder build
Post by: ponyboy on October 04, 2011, 08:50:02 pm
So I'm working on making this build, currently lvl 23.  Ive done 5 generations of 2hander, now this is my first shielder.  Im trying to imitate balbaroths build, but im not sure exactly what it is.  I like speed based chars.  Here's what I got, any input from experienced shielders would be appreciated.

Level 30 (4 420 577 xp)

    * Strength: 15
    * Agility: 21
    * Hit points: 58

    * Skills to attributes: 2

    * Ironflesh: 4
    * Power Strike: 5
    * Shield: 6
    * Athletics: 7
    * Riding: 0
    * Horse Archery: 0
    * Power Draw: 0
    * Power Throw: 0
    * Weapon Master: 7

    * One Handed: 163
    * Two Handed: 1
    * Polearm: 1
    * Archery: 1
    * Crossbow: 1
    * Throwing: 1

Also would it be worth it to go down to 3if and put shield up to 7?  Thanks.

I tried to verify the effect of shield skill a few months ago. It seems you get about +8% more protection (I counted amount of slashes) for each point. I would go +1 shield and -1 wm. Imho 5 or 6 wm is enough.

If I'm not mistaken, this is Balb's build at level 30. I'm sure he's level 33 or so now though.

  * Strength: 18
    * Agility: 21
    * Hit points: 53

    * Skills to attributes: 8

    * Ironflesh: 0
    * Power Strike: 6
    * Shield: 5
    * Athletics: 7
    * Riding: 0
    * Horse Archery: 0
    * Power Draw: 0
    * Power Throw: 0
    * Weapon Master: 5

    * One Handed: 146
    * Two Handed: 1
    * Polearm: 1
    * Archery: 1
    * Crossbow: 1
    * Throwing: 1

5 PS is too low for melee, you wont be killing anyone.  It could take up to 8 hits with a blunt weapon to kill an heirloomed tincan

Actually with speed bonus you can quite easily. That's kinda the point of a high athletics build.

As far as 5 ps, for my first 4 gens of my 2hander build i rolled with only 15 strength, and honestly I got more kills than with my recent 18 str build.  The speed was king.

You only get no speed bonus from your own movement spe

If I'm understating his poor english correct, your speed doesnt matter, therefore high athletics is poor choice for dealing damage.

EDIT: Actually after thinking about it for a bit, this must only apply to ranged.

5ps is doable, but difficult. Prepare to glance. 18 STR 6 PS is the minimum for non frustrating melee, but as an 18/21 build is simple it's pretty easy to make an agi shielder with decent striking power.

Suggested 18/21

I personally would go 5 IF 7 shield 5 WM w/ that build.  You'll need pierce or blunt dmg most likely.

If you plan to use some long sword try this one out.
I did very well with it and you will kill other people very fast.
In my opinion damage is the thing 1h is lacking most and with
7 PS and a MW Nordic you are hitting really hard.
It makes it a lot easier to play vs multiple enemies. Combined with 6 athletics
you are fast, hard hitting, and well protected (shield).

    Strength: 21
    Agility: 18
    Hit points: 56

    Skills to attributes: 8

    Ironflesh: 0
    Power Strike: 7
    Shield: 5
    Athletics: 6
    Riding: 0
    Horse Archery: 0
    Power Draw: 0
    Power Throw: 0
    Weapon Master: 5

    One Handed: 146
    Two Handed: 1
    Polearm: 1
    Archery: 1
    Crossbow: 1
    Throwing: 1

The more agility the better, you dont need PS or IF or that stuff at all.

I prefer it when others are weak and die fast  :D

Chiming in here, I don't personally build characters that aren't hybrids/tin-cans with Weapon master anymore.
Just isn't worth it.
How retarded this sounds, I suggest anyone try this on a skip the fun character:

Even if 24/15 is probably better.

To ponyboy: 2h has a lot more base damage. 1h has a lower base.
If you are EU, I guess 15/21 is fine for a 1h&shielder.

Seems like you would be better off with 24/15 you could put 7 points into Iron Flesh. If you are gearing light then maybe you can skip the iron flesh but even then it seems like quite an investment for 1 extra athletics, I think I'd rather have +14 HP even wearing cloth.

The weapon you are planning on using will have a bearing on the build you use.
You can get by with less PS if you are using a blunt or pierce weapon.  You can get by with less athletics if you are using a longer weapon.

I've got a 21/15 build right now.  It works well.  I'm using a short but powerful weapon (MW Italian Falchion).  I could use a bit more speed, but I wouldn't lower my PS unless I had a blunt/pierce weapon.
