The AI can be hilarious sometimes, the funniest faction I've encountered as France was the Genoese.
Seriously they are fun to watch, they declare war on you with 1-2 pavise crossbowmen and try to get money from you. :mrgreen:
Funnier screenshot would be when I faceplanted 1600 englishmen with 700 frenchmen, Hard-Hard difficulty. That battle was torture. :mrgreen:

In Rome:TW Barbarian Invasion I once defeated a Barbarian Army of like 2 thousand defending my Village with 2 Units of City watches and a General´s Cavalry.
In the End it came down to them roaming through the city and me left with only the cav.I charged, ran away, charged, ran away and so on, like a hundred times until they finally routed.
I felt so proud that day.
btw, this talk reminds me that I´ll need to play Total war once more :D
But to be true, mostly I just use autocalc.If you´d play every battle that comes up in a game, you´d be playing for 50-100 hours lol.

Blah, autocalc sucks because the AI can fail even if you have an advantage, or you could win the fight by yourself with low casualties.
Also it ruins the game. Man up and command every battle.
I only use autocalc when I besiege something and there is like 1 unit inside, or something. Then it's fine to use imo.
Also I love to spam agents. Spy/assassin spam is hilarious, Felt so cheap to destroy a kingdom like that. :mrgreen:

Weird, for me the AI always fights perfectly fine with acceptable Casualties :D What do I care really if 400 Spearmen and Peasants die in incredible Pain :d

Well I always throw everything I have at my foes, no matter the cost > : D
And I sometimes use Peasants when I have few money. 8 Units of Peasants with 1-2 Units of light cavalry can inflict good damage to a enemy host(And overall that kind of army costs almost nothing and is easy to maintain).

I played SS mod too, but native m2tw before I knew about it's existence.
Also if you're a RTW player, DON'T play native, it blows. Grab either RTR(Rome:Total Realism), or Europa Barbarorum.
I had way more fun with RTR though, it just felt better, EB's way of naming everything was too confusing for me.

I never, ever autocalced, unless it's a merc army I can't retrain anyways. I usually had just a few main production centers for troops and the rest are just economic colonies, I hated having understrength stacks and the AI wasted a ridiculous amount of troops. Plus I tended to have relatively small, extremely elite armies. Losing even a few troops to stupid autocalc was a pain.
Anyways, Total War battlemap and tactical AI has been retarded since RTW. Original Shogun, good AI. Original MTW, good AI. Then bam, totally moronic AI and useless diplomacy for every following game. Playing VH/VH is the only way to give the AI enough of a handicap that it sometimes ends up as a challenge, and it's totally artificial. Most good mods used Darth's formations, which made tactical AI a bit better, but I haven't run into anything that'll make the AI pull it's head out of it's ass on the campaign map.

The only thing I didn't like in EB that every kingdom/unit had it's authentic name.
(It's a good thing by the way, I just need to get used to it, imo.)
It was kind of a mindfuck to command the húbzwarlishígzar os nowujziwisk, unit names I didn't even understand.
Maybe I'll give it another go a bit later.

Yup, agreed. The rant was mostly about the crappier quality of the vanilla games released since and including RTW. The modding community made it palatable.

If they would just remake Rome or Medieval but then properly, instead of making a noob friendly Total War that is Shogun 2. I couldn´t stand the complete lack of unit variation in that one. Too bad everyone liked it, now Total War is probably ruined forever.

Total War was ruined the second people bought unit packs in E:TW. The day that people paid FULL PRICE for Napoleon: TW right after paying full price for E:TW.. Napoleon was what E:TW should have been, you paid twice for the patched version of E:TW. Thank you morons.
Shogun 2 was fun for a week. Nothing pulls me in the way M2TW w/ SS does. RTW does too but that's only when I'm in the mood for some Roman carnage.

Stainless Steel is great, but I'm more of a fan of King_Kong's other mod, Third Age Total War. It's a great mod and the next version is going to have a bunch of realistic settlements. Nothing quite like holding the line againist an unending flow of orcs, shooting down your enemies with elven archers, or charging forth with an army of ents to crush Isengard.

Shogun 2 had a multiplayer campaign, which was a huge plus.
Until you were at turn 50 and it stopped working, every single time.

I tried Third Age. Did a pretty awesome Dwarf campaign where I reconquered the entire chain of mountains, including Khazad-Dum, beating Orcs of Gundabad and Goblins of Misty Mountains. Sent 2 stacks to help Rohirim against Isengard, Isengard got raped. Then I started helping a battered Gondor against Mordor, ran into those armored troll units, underestimated them and got some of my best, most veteran units destroyed along with my faction leader...then I GTX. Still have the save somewhere.

yeah, I've found that often Gondor gets owned by Mordor before anything can be done to save them.

Depends on the campaign, in mine Gondor's been doing fine, until at turn 150 or so they finally lost Minas Tirith.
Thing about Third Age is.. it's very easy. Every faction has something that completely rapes the opposition. It was actually fairly intimidating to start up Stainless Steel after all the ez-mode Third Age battles, haha.
Elves have archers (kill 3000 orcs with 300 elves, 0 casualties..) and the best units in the game, Mordor has Nazgul and trolls (Nazgul alone can rout entire armies, trolls are basically godlike if used properly..), Rohirrim has cavalryspam, etc..

yeah, I've found that often Gondor gets owned by Mordor before anything can be done to save them.
As Rohan, I rode with my horde to the fields of Pelennor and routed the foul orcs of Mordor and pushed them back to Mordor and now my scouts are assisting in keeping the orcs at bay outside the mountain walls of Mordor.
While doing tihs i roflpwn'd Isengard. :wink:

3rd age is not really difficult until you encounter Balrogs -.- fucking assholes.

I actually didn't have any problem taking down the Balrog in Moria (well I did sacrifice a large part of the army) but I came in expecting a ridiculously tough fight. I had no idea the armored trolls would be so frigging dangerous though. After posting this I hit up that save, just gave up on Gondor (I was actually coming to try and relieve Minas Tirith, since a couple of the outer forts on the ring wall had already been taken, but it fell before I could send out another of my big home protection armies, all the way north and west beyond the Wood Elf forests.

Wood elves can steamroll Moria, too. They can recruit ents, which are basically trolls on steroid, and one unit has 20 ents.
If you're Rohan, I suppose trolls are the hardest..

Anyway, most of you probably know, but Broken Crescent is a brilliant mod as well. For anyone who wants to experience medieval warfare in the eastern parts of the world, try it.

Seems to me that at least one of those jobs wasn't performed very.....ehm....thoroughly.....either the gaming or.......? :wink:
