Title: Foggy forest! (Is there a way to enforce fog?)
Post by: Thomek on January 04, 2011, 10:12:49 am
I'm too stupid and lazy to make such a map, but I think it would be awesome and simple and quick to make.

Suggestion for map layout:

* Natural fightpoint is the bridge.
* West has cabin with corners and windows, East have better hills
* People can sneak over/under the water. It can be deep in center but shallow near the shore so archers cant fire from under water.
* The areas marked FLAT has fewer trees for cav to roam (but still trees, can't give cav too easy time)
* The road is a natural guideline for troop movement
* Surprise cav-charges to the cabin through the fog.. Too bad they can't get into the cabin :-)
* X-bowers heaven with all the trees.. but they would have to look behind always..

In it's simplicity and easyness of building, I'm sure someone will have time to make it :-) I think it would be a very simple and different map from what we have now.. Would be awesome if FOG was enforced and always on though.

I think it would be a paranoid map, where it's easy to get lost, Ninja people, and meet random people in duels, as well as have awesome charges over the bridge that forms a natural stand-off situation. (Shouldn't bee too long bridge).

a road in it..

a cabin, that someone can go into or hide behind/run around.

I like the layout, but you need to give the east side some equivalent to the cabin. I can see that as potentially a deciding factor for the map.

I know that's why I'm thinking they have more hills in a wider arc on their side of the bridge. Road is in a kind of pass.

I like the idea in general, but I'm not sure if fog can be set in cRPG or if it's over-ridden by the server.  The only other trick is to make sure players can actually find each other as the round progresses.  It needs a clear focal point or else we'll all be stuck watching some idiot draw out the end of the round by hiding in the fog.  The bridge could solve that if implemented correctly though.

yeah that's why I have the road and the bridge there.

Fog is random, but it wouldn't be to hard to add an always-foggy weather just for some maps.
If someone makes the maps, that is.

Cmpx.. I think I could make such a map with the scene editor.

But I would have no idea how to export it from M&B and make it MP. Could you help out on the technical side? :-)

I'm not exactly the best person for that (never done any mapping), Airith should be able to help you (he's NA, so he'll probably see it later).

Forests are indeed cool maps, but when using too much trees, the game can start lagging badly.
That's why there aren't really much forests map or it are very small ones.

This. When I did a bit of scene-editing way back when, the first try-out map I made had a rather large forest and it was near impossible for anyone with a low-end PC to play.

There might be a way to use the trees more sparingly and still create the same effect however, I don't know.

I think high hills and a cave / grotto should be added to south-western corner of the map.

Well, if you make a small map, it can work.
UPDATE: I'm working for an example without the fog.

There you go, you don't have to enforce the fog anymore! It's permanent on every siege server. Satisfied?

Siege servers have the blue fog bug

Siege servers have the blue fog bug

Not in DX7 they don't.

By the way, there was a (dense-ish) forest map on NA servers (not the ambush map but an older one) that didn't lag even on my poor laptop (2*2.2GHz, 4GB,  ATI mob. 4570) maybe that size would ideal for your map. I don't know what it was called or if they still run it though.
