Title: Ping. What class to avoid at certain pings? What's your experiences?
Post by: Thomek on January 25, 2011, 01:12:07 am
I know I can hardly do very well if my ping is 70+ as a Ninja. Blocking, movement and hits become very unpredictable.

Less than 60 is OK for 2 handers I think. Archers and shielders and horsemen might have a different story though.

I think it belongs in the newbie section, cause it's really important to know what playstyles are sustainable for your ping. (Like, it might not be you, but your ping!)

What's your experiences?

Would love to give some advice, but really my experience is that when everything is normal (around 40) everything is ok.
When I go outside EU things get bad (100+). At times things are out of wack as well on EU4 (80+ on its bad days).

The more ping I get the longer weapon I grab, that seems to work well.

Long ass, spammable weapon for 150+ ping. Or some sort of ranged, though if they're dodging you might as well shoot randomly as well.

I can't 1v1 with my shielder with 100+ ping, people just get around me when I think they're in front. Bigger battles are fine as they're clusterfucks anyway.

Under 80ish ping is best for a manual blocker, anything over then high agi builds will wreck you as the you'll be hit before the animation finishes on your screen.

Cav is fine with high ping as long as you're aware of how much to compensate for the increased time it takes for a swing/stab to hit.

Heh i get 70 ping at best, so i went for str builds which are slow and can one/twoshot people or crush through blocks if necessary. Blocking is possible but it's problematic vs very fast weapons. Then on the official servers i get 100 ping which makes it unplayable.

For me I can manual block fine under 100 ping. Anything over I do terrible. When I played on EU I rolled as a Shielder, because they didn't need to manual block so you could actually fight a little easier with the lag. Also range works well for high pings as it doesn't affect much from ping.

Yea range is fine for high ping
i can also manual block well but if a person start using fancy tricks its almost impossible to change the way i am blocking to block the other direction
190 ping for NA and 250 ping for EU so i stay away from EU
my main is currently a shielder with warhammer str based and i play better than many people

High ping = shield is usually your friend, but if you're like me you get a rash for donning a shield.

Well I'm playing cavalry, come from germany and got these stats recently on the NA server:

(click to show/hide)

Ping was at about 150.

It's still possible to be top scorer if you avoid cav vs. cav fights and if you try to stab the enemy in a straight line, not if they are moving left or right!

for me it's number of players on a server rather than ping

i can even chamber block on na servers with 120-150+ ping if my comp isnt frame lagging

a lot of the time this isnt the case though and if it's a full or near full server it's hard for me to even manual block - forget about trying if they have an agi build, specially 1h's

i think i usually have around 70 ping or less on eu servers and eu1/2/3/5/6 tend to be nicer for my comp than the others

because of my sucky comp i find playing cav impossible too

Dude..

play dx7 everything except resolution to minimum. It's ugly, but a stable 60fps is worth it..

Playing on a 2y old laptop here.. And yes my ping goes up from 55 to 70ish when the server is full. I also think it's the server though, because it goes up for everyone i know too.

lol and what makes u think i dont do that already???

my mighty Geforce 6800 takes 3-4 minutes to load warband on a good day and 5-10+ on a bad one.

It takes me about 1 full round to switch from windowned to full screen for the first time + spawn too.

I use to play with 20fps, lowest settings possible. Manual blocking absolutely impossible, which was why I played cav and just lanced people int he back of the head. Moment I got a new computer...I could block! :O

My experience is that no matter what ping i have, there will be lag whenever i don't need it. I've warped at 28 ping many times.
I don't even think my personal ping matters..

Well, I live in a fairy land far away from civilized places, so it's 160+ on EU and 250+ on NA for me. That said, I do pretty fine as a 1h/polearm medium cavalry - nothing fancy or, God forbid, anywhere near the top of the scoreboard, but it's bearable. Just have to begin stabbing a bit earlier.

Also have a 2h alt. Well... I can't usually beat a good 2h with lower ping. Archery/Xbow-ery (-manship?) would be fine if I didn't suck at aiming. :P

As somebody else has noted, shielders and cavalry are the best bet for those with high pings.

...Then again, I just remembered a person called TooSexy from the old days, who had like 300+ and just waved his bardiche around, usually ending up pretty high on the board.

tbh, you can play with high ping if you have a good computer and a good internet connection.

I can play 2H 27 agi ninja om na servers (150+ ping) except for a few times, when i just start lagging. Then i have to restart my computer, and i can play again.

As shinyspoons mentioned long weapons work fine.  But ranged weapons definitely help when pinging 200+.  Coincidentally playing in EU where I am pinging 200+ seems to help dramatically with my reflexes when I come back to the US servers pinging around 70.  People need to get on the duel servers more, still want more practice regardless of ping.

With ping of 150+ ranged weapons get really odd for me, they seem to go through people more often than not, you will only reliably hit stationary people.  1h+shield is difficult with higher pings too because it fucks your reaction times too, however if you mainly shield and only try to strike when people are not focused on you its a good choice.

spear + shield is probably the most useful high ping build

From my experience with pings between 50 and 150, I would honestly say that high ping spear + shield infantry is the most frustrating thing I have yet attempted in Warband multiplayer.

Yeah I know Too sexy, too. He was a great player indeed.

I play a horse archer for my constant 200 (300 the last few days) ping on the NA servers. I even top the scoreboard on a good/lucky day.

My reasoning was:

1 - I'm ranged, so, no manual block. (Cause at that ping even if you use a "Auto block program of ultimate blocking", well, you won't block)

2 - I'm on a horse, so, if I lag too badly I'm still fast enough that I have bigger chances of it stabilizing before someone gets to me (When you run in a straight line while lagging).
