Here's the stats on both:
Heavy Bastard Sword
weapon length: 105
weight: 2
difficulty: 10
speed rating: 98
weapon length: 105
thrust damage: 23 pierce
swing damage: 36 cut
slots: 2
Secondary Mode
5480 gold
Longsword
weapon length: 106
weight: 1.8
difficulty: 10
speed rating: 98
weapon length: 106
thrust damage: 23 pierce
swing damage: 36 cut
slots: 2
Secondary Mode
6660 gold
In short, for 1100 more gold in upkeep you get +1 reach and -0.2 weight (which actually is a bad thing considering weapon stun effects).
Now, let's compare 2 other weapons:
Persian War Axe
weapon length: 90
weight: 4.5
difficulty: 16
speed rating: 91
weapon length: 90
thrust damage: 0 pierce
swing damage: 42 cut
slots: 2
Unbalanced
Bonus against Shield
4035 gold
Bardiche
weapon length: 102
weight: 3
difficulty: 14
speed rating: 91
weapon length: 102
thrust damage: 0 pierce
swing damage: 43 cut
slots: 2
Unbalanced
Bonus against Shield
4876 gold
In this case you get +1 damage and +12 reach, with -1.5 weight for a mere 800 gold more.
Why does the +1 reach on a longsword vs heavy bastard cost so much more compared to the gold cost for +12 reach on the bardiche compared with the persian axe?

The only reasonable explanation is that you are charged for being stylish.
I'm OK with that though. Longsword model looks so much better, my only wish is to have a scabbard added.
-
Whats the problem? Basically the same sword, the other one is slightly better so you pay for slightly better. I disagree with the stylish part however, I think the Heavy bastard sword looks a lot better.
-
When not playing with Danish, I play with Heavy Bastard, playing with Longsword doesn't make sense, IMO.

Paying more for slightly better isn't the issue, the problem is the rather large amount you have to pay more for a very tiny advantage.

Oh, c'mon. Sometimes you have to pay a LOT more to play with worse. Compare these two words with poor katana. :(
I think chadz (or Fasader) secretly hate ninjas.

Only my old friends use FOTM (Heavy Bastards) :P
Also,
Longsword should have +1 slash damage to make it more appealing than HBS.

True that!
Also more weapon weight isnt completely a good thing. The heavier the weapon in your hands is, the slower you move. A weapon with 2 more weight in your hands slows you down a lot more than armor with 2 more weight.

I don't think there's any uncertainty, nor any secret, that they hate ninjas.
But on topic the two swords do need some internal balancing... the cost increase does not justify the 'perks' to step up to the longsword at all.
-
chadz loves ninjas.
I can feel it.
But Fasader and Paul hates us (Or our CONSTANT but justified katana whining), and they are the balancers.
Anyway, I think your post shows that not all is perfect in balancing-land..

No, giving it +1 damage puts it into the same booth as great swords damage wise, rather lower the price abit.
-
Lower the price a bit yes. I don't think there's any real incentive for using the longsword. I use the Heavy Bastard Sword as my shorter, cheaper, faster back up to my Sword of War/Danish.
-
I bet the devs answer will be nerfing the heavy bastard sword :P

Yeah but it's a lot shorter. I wouldn't mind increase of price either. Kinda like the length and of course, speed. Would like Longsword to become shorter alternative to great swords.
Also 37 is close to German GS and Great Sword but stab is weaker.
