After deciding to become an archer next gen (bring on the hate), I started looking for suitable melee weapons to use. Seeing as I'd most likely be using a bow which takes up 2 slots, I'd need to use a weapon which takes up one slot. I'm not a fan of the Mace so I looked into the 1H weapons.
I noticed a few have a Secondary Mode function which allows them to be used as 2H weapons which makes them gain extra damage and attack speed whilst keeping the same length. Are there any drawbacks for using 1H weapons in a 2H mode apart from the obvious short range and the annoyance of switching mode? Which mode is more viable?

You don't get any penalties using 2h mode and most 2h mode of 1 handers give better speed and damage. Examples are the Military Sickle/Fighting Axe/Langes Messer. All of these are 1 handers that can be used in 2 hand mode make sure you get 2h proficiency for them !

Thanks for the link. The only thing is that having the change mode everytime would be very annoying and I'd probably forget about it most of the time.

You will also pay a lot of upkeep money for using those weapons, since they are listed as onehanders and you will have 1 wpf in 1h.

Didn't think about that one, that's fairly important.

my hint: to not forget to change that weapon (i lol hard when an archer forgot to change his langes messer and is like OMG and press x in the middle of a figth...)
make it your first weapon to appear (slot 1) and tada you'll never forget to press x!!
also the 1wpf malus has got fixed and is not that much now

Why would you not get the mace, the current op choice of weapon for ranged.

9/10 an archer with low athletics is a dead archer.

Black Armor tincan archer with Longbow begs to differ.

Wrong, melee weapons are one category for the extra breakchance thingy. The highest melee skill is picked in the script when checking for breakage.

Why would you choose a weapon you can not use properly?
Pick a 0 slot melee weapon, hand axe or hammer and you can take second stack of arrows with the 2 slot bow.
Also, you will be much more safe with 7 ath than 3 ps and 4 ath.
