Title: Revive your dead GPUs and laptops, fry them in an oven!
Post by: Mtemtko on August 15, 2011, 12:49:28 am
Doing what is shown in the link below I managed to revive my 6600GT that has been dead for like 5 years, I thought its all bs, but all the screen flashes are gone and the card is stable.

It might be worth giving it a try if your dead laptop/GPU is doing nothing else than sitting somewhere collecting dust.

^ 61 pages of this thread tells it aint just a joke if you dont believe me.

It only works temporary and not always, though.

Pretty much like the old RROD fix(Putting the box in a towel and let it heat up), not very consistent.

but definately good to scam people on Ebay :D

I know its far from a reliable fix, but its worth a go if you have some spare time.

I did this with an old gpu (6800gt). It died and then sat in a box after I upgraded everything. I read about this and thought I'd try it. It actually worked! The card went into a computer for my parents so it didn't do anything gpu intensive. Still works a year or so later.

edit: other thoughts
From what I read it works well with certain fixes. Like if solder got brittle or something and deteriorated making for poor or broken connections, especially on the power related circuits. The reheating helps reconnect those circuits and revive the dead card.

When I did my gpu a capacitor fell out and two others were loose from the solder heating up. I re-soldered them and it seems to be ok now. I ran a benchmark program for a day on it with no problems or heat issues.

My old gpu card was overheating a lot, mainly because the fan didn't work. I don't think overheating it any more would've helped :P.

Watched my little brother do this once.... Gave his GPU a few months of life and then pop again.
