Title: Siege: Chalice of the Desert FINAL VERSION RELEASED
Post by: Comrade_Temuzu on August 10, 2011, 03:28:14 pm
Hi all. Alright, so after hearing constant bitching and moaning on the siege server about the quality of the maps, I promised to make one myself. So here it is. Its largely inspired by the La Valette castle in Witcher 2.

Alright, screenshots, Ill explain the concept as we go.

Basically, attacking with ladders is an option, but damn hard. The siege tower is the best way to attack. The siege tower is also big, about 1.5 times the size of the normal tower. This means theres a lot more room inside. The siege tower leads straight to the gatehouse, making opening the gate relatively easy.

This is where things get rather interesting. There are three routes over this bridge, one is straight through, and two through the garden below. Attackers lose health when jumping to the garden, so its risky, but allows you to flank the main enemy forces. There are two more routes, but these require some player spawned ladders.

The defenders mostly spawn inside the walls, from where theres a door leading straight to the flag. Of course you can jump off the wall aswell. Some defenders can spawn outside, but theyre fairly rare. The way for the attackers to win is to block the defenders inside their walls while capping the flag.

It takes about a minute to get the siege tower to its place, by this time it should be full of attackers. Epic breach ensues.
Also, the defenders cant leave the castle anywhere else but the gate.

PM me if you want the map for your server. Its just about done, some polishing perhaps, maybe a bit testing. But otherwise done.

I hope to see it there aswell, but I have no idea how the map selection thing works, as in what do I have to do to get the map in.

map looks visually appealing for sure, but I'm already concerned that it is too attacker biased.  After the initial chokepoint of the siege tower/gatehouse, there is NOwhere defenders can make a decent stand to defend.  attackers poor in and defenders get stomped.  at least thats how I see it going.

Looking forward to giving it a try, to test my hypothesis

I tried making it as balanced as possible, by making the attackers spawn in two different places, while defenders spawn right by the flag. This makes it so that the attackers need to attack in masses to keep the momentum and get the flag, and if that happens the attackers deserve the win.

Only way to know is to try it. You could always add more layers of defense if it turns out to be a problem.

Yeah, Im thinking barricades near the flag if necessary. As the matter of fact, you can build a barricade on the bridge with about 3-4 of those wood piles.

It looks very lean to me, good job.

Cheers.

Made loads of improvement and changes, uploading the link and suggesting them to the siege servers.

Alright, the final version is ready to go. Sadly I havent seen any of the server owners taking interest yet.

I think performance might be an issue here, but I would at least test it on the official siege servers once before drawing conclusions.

I suggest you contact Mylet, he is in charge of map rotation and server configs on the EU servers.

Only way into the castle is through the tower which spawns half a mile away, public arnt the brightest so using there own ladders when first spawning in isnt going to happen.

We have removed this from our server.

Ah, so you did try it? Cool. So more ways to attack you say? I can make that happen. Moving the tower closer might be a good idea aswell.

Off the top of my head Im thinking some ladders would be apparently a good idea? I believe I can make a backdoor entrance aswell.

Cheers, Ill shoot you a PM once I have an updated version. Thanks for trying it

No problem.

The seige tower is to far away and there was no other way up. 2 ladders and the tower closer would be awesome tbh.

anyone thats decent with ladders can get over that wall, its not hard to do.  1 ladder halfway up wall to the part that juts out, then another to get over the wall

but I agree, shouldnt take siege tower 1 minute.  attackers should within 10 second walk of walls

Start of the map for us and 10 people stuck outside until the tower which took about 1:30 to get there...

Alright, Ill move the siegetower about 50% closer, but I reckon I need to make it look good, so I will move the encampment closer aswell. Shouldnt be a problem, this way the attackers can attack the defenders even faster, which infact may generate a new problem, defenders not getting into position fast enough, the attackers can just raise the ladders as soon as they spawn which means they can assault and overtake the walls before the defenders even get over the bridge.

Interesting, I will look into this once I get home, Im thinking of maybe making a barracks or something near the walls, where a part of the defenders can spawn, but then the defenders could spawn behind the attackers, which Ive found isnt much fun. Other way is to move the attackers to all spawn in the encampment, but that means they need to walk for a longer path.

Two ladders sounds about right, on both sides of the gatehouse, to be raised on the towers, as the walls are "spiked", preventing ladders to be used. I will probably add another way in the castle, using a backdoor on the left side of the wall (From attackers POV), which leads into the town itself, and from which the attackers may proceed to the walls, marketplace and bridge.

no reason for 2 map ladders when there is a siege tower.  this is why several of the other maps are unbalanced, theres too many entry points for defenders to have a chance in hell

Ive added two ladders, and a backdoor, but the defenders can simply abandon the walls and defend the bridge.

It needs to be gametested, Ill upload the new version tomorrow.
