Ghosters.
Players that participate in the battle.
Helping out there team, by sitting in spectator mode floating around the map. And giving information about the enemy on there TS/Vent.
Anything that can be done about this?
-
One way would be to kick all specs from battle.
People could apply as reporters/livestreamers/recorders/moviemakers and get an admin level of 1 to the strategus servers so they can join any game whenever they want.
Just thinking loud here.

the spectators were kicked last night in one of our battles, though it's the first time i've seen it...
-
There is no way to stop this except to kick spectators, even then someone could just die and not respawn and achieve the same effect. It happens and is going to continue happening and happens in every game in existence.

e: respond =/= respawn

Is it possible to just remove the "spectator faction"?
Or it wouldnt change anything?
-
One tough thing is that most of the spectators yesterday were people waiting for the enxt battle as the battle alsted over an hour. If you simply kicked them out then later battles will have half-filled rosters as it would be difficult to know when the battle starts. Maybe some kind of warning pm or something to let them know the server is ready for their battle and then handling spectators would be easier.
Also, has anyone else noticed higher ping than old strategus?? Same location I used to get 156 ping on old strategus eu server and now I am getting 250 ping and on the NA server I am getting around a 100 ping and I live in the Midwest.

And what do you think about force First Person Spectating, you apply for a team spectating, and if you are a spy you get banned from strategus. It's honest?
But anyway "neutrals" spy can join fight and then report their own moving team...

Disable spectators in strat battle servers. Seems pretty obvious.
If someone wants to witness a battle then they need to sign up for it, or hear about it through a 3rd party. Seems like an easy fix.

Add the fade to black that we all love ... (or forced one person spectator like Elio mentionned).
You die , then naturally you can't give anymore information. So you get the annoying fade to black of death that reminds you that you just died and when you respawn , voilĂ !, back alive to fight some more.
Spectators would get black screen too so they can just idle on the server and wait for their delayed battle ..
Not sure it's the best solution but that's one.

fade to black and forced player spec are great. Or more specifically only being able to spec/follow the teams commander :)
-
Dear lord, nothing would be more enjoyed by players than staring at a black screen while they are dead. Think about what you're asking for for a second. Does this change at all make the game more fun or does it provide a minor benefit for a major drawback? Yes, traditionally after the joy of dying it's been known to be a great idea to force players to stare at absolutely nothing. Does that not sound ridiculous to you?
People will ghost no matter what you do, if you don't think actual spies exist in this game you're two steps behind the curve.
I think a compromise would be to make it so that players can only spectate one side ever. Keeps death from being mind numbingly boring, yet gives spectators something to watch. Sure people might be able to neutral spec an opposing team, but without the ability to free cam or see where their chosen team is located the efficacy of such tactics is greatly diminished.

That seems better. Because then we can still have the reporters/livestreamers/recorders/moviemakers

I would support something a long these lines. It is extremely hard to coordinate sneak attacks when you have an "eye in the sky" telegraphing your every move.
It happens and is going to continue happening and happens in every game in existence.
This is far from the truth.
The solution would be to kick spectators, and lock dead teammates into 3rd person view for their own team. Many, MANY, games use this method. I was very surprised that this was not the norm when I first started playing. However, it may be something that is hard coded. So we may be shit out of luck on that one. Any word on that chadz?

How is this a solution to ghosting? Unless you are extremely picky in who you choose to allow in, which is to say that someone would have to accept spectators individually, the people who planned to ghost-intel will now just plan to be a "reporter' to the exact same effect.

You could just watch the livestream to see what the other team does. How does that help? There will always be some ways to spy.

Well yeah that's kind of my point. We don't want to implement a DRM style solution that hurts the people who just want to spectate as much as spies as it will function much like DRM. Spies will still be spying (i.e. pirates get games before legit consumers) except with some of the ideas honest spectators would have to jump through hoops or not be allowed in at all (similar to paying customers getting hit by DRM harder than pirates ever will).
Spiers gonna spy, they will find a way, whatever solution intended to prevent ghosting needs to keep in mind that we're trying to limit the effectiveness of ghosting, not push all spectators out of matches (at least i think, maybe spectators are unwelcome).
-
Perhaps restrict any dead players to spectating only teammates. It won't solve the problem but it seems to be a good mitigating step.
Though, even if we want it I don't know if such a thing could be coded :?

Step to take to remove ghosting: Restrict spectating to only teammate's view. This prevents people from panning the camera around, and is what we always used for scrims in native.
