Just as the topic states. Couldn't really find a clear answer to this question.
Do shields on back slow you down?
Basically running around with a 2h weapon and wondering if I could add some rocks or shield for fun in the empty slots.
Only thing I found that effected your wpf was weight in armor slots. Unless I misunderstood something.

They do, afaik.

Yup. Unlike sheathing your weapon which will make you run faster, putting a shield on your back makes no impact on how fast you run compared to it being in your hand.
Silly shields be slowing you down no matter what you do.
-
Actually I think shields on your back have an even higher speed penalty. At least it used to be that way with 2 shields.
This only applies to movement speed, I don't think it affects wpf.
-
Except when riding a horse... :D
-
It will slow your movement speed down, but only by the amount of weight the shield is as if it were weapons carried.
Carrying two (or more) shields gives you a big penalty though. Only ever carry a single shield.
So yeah, carrying a shield on your back isn't a bad thing unless you're counting every bit of weight and agility backpeddling. No effect on WPF.

sorry but thats just an urban myth. shield weights are more likely doubled to quadrupled because you lose anywhere from 10-33% of your movement speed just for carrying one. carrying another piece of gear like a weapon of the same weight doesnt have anywhere CLOSE to the same speed penalty

So then do you also get the extra armor that the shield adds when it is sheathed?

That armour is only for reducing damage against the shield. This is why low armour but high HP shields last longer against axes but can still be broken by small weapons compared to Plate covered shields and such who break instantly against axes but are invulnerable against arrows and light weapons.
If you get shot in the back and have a shield there, it is a flat 50% damage reduction, last I checked (I may be wrong on that exact figure, but you do take less damage).

Actually, it is a formula.
When a PROJECTILE hits a shield on your back, it adds Shield_armor + 10 to the area that would be hit.
Yeah, just don't tell goretooth that he could carry a plate covered round shield on his back and literally not take damage from range! He already has 86 body armor [lordly black + lordly heavy gauntlets], that would add 71 more to his back?!?!
-
Does a shield on your back (passive, unequipped) give you the body armor from it? Asking about those 3.5 weight ~60 Body armor bucklers.

See the above post.

Suddendly I may need shield skill :!:

See the above post.
Not merely taking missile shots in the back, I am asking if it factors into your overall body armor passively.

Nope.
