in the first series the battles were small scale. Like one viking shit on a raid etc there were no major armies in it

Yeah, it was all kind of laughably small-scale, and it looks like that hasn't changed. It just looks so silly, a royal army having a little gang brawl on a beach. It's also weird that they put a spoiler like Floki dying into the season trailer.

But one of the main dudes in that trailer was a 2h hero and the other one a dual wielder. Also shirtless dudes, nobody wearing helmets, shieldwall done wrong -- why are they holding the shields above their heads like that? And actually you're wrong, the battle scenes in HBO's Rome were done very well.

Rome was a good series and reasonably faithful to history (with dramatic license taken in the narrative, of course). Definitely recommend it.

Maybe you were thinking of that Spartacus show? That's not by HBO, though. I can't think of any bad historical dramas from HBO; Deadwood and Band of Brothers were both good. The fighting in Game of Thrones is a bit Hollywood sometimes, but not really ridiculously over the top.

Vikings started out decent but by the end of the season it was super gay. Also, the writers had a fetish with threesomes.
