General Off Topic / Hardcore Henry (movie review)

Hardcore Henry Trailer

Diving right in from the opening credits this movie was a self-indulgent, disgusting, nausea inducing, violent, sexist, erratic, threadbare plot that yet manages to be overly complex and confusing if you bothered to even try to follow it. That opening sequence during the credits was a slow mo ode to the many forms of violence that may be perpetrated upon the human flesh. A veritable orgy of death in a near pornographic manner. That the film itself continued to explore new and surprising ways to add to the collection is a testament to the depravity of the individuals who created this work that left the theater smelling of the piss from the previous crowd exposed to its carnage.
Sharlto Copley's appearance is a cruel trick played on the audience as a known actor who you feel can anchor your place in this crazy film but he ends up spinning you further from a comfort zone than any other actor in the film. The one exception may be Danila Koslovsky (a guy) with his Kurt Cobaine-look and chalk board screeching presence as the main villain.

This film was made primarily for one group of people. Anyone who has played the first person shooter and action games from the last twenty years who enjoyed them as well as the cut scenes that added to the atmosphere like the memorable ones beginning with Call of Duty 4. If that is you, then you may enjoy this movie as much as I and my daughter did (she's 20 and an FPS fangoil). Really, it was cool. Ignore the 50% rotten tomato ratings and other negative reviews from people who just didn't get it.
They have never walked away from the keyboard feeling that intense exhilaration and strange kind of exhaustion after an really good intense gaming session. This movie leaves you feeling that feeling without a mouse and keyboard in your hand.

I give it a 7 barrel with x3 ammo gun salute.

So a 2 slot bowman can choose between crappy arrows or crappy melee. Or put another way, choose between good arrows or good melee.

Game Balance Discussion / Fix the sound when arrows glance

You adjusted the soak and damage, but glances still sound like solid hits. Silly to have to go to the scoreboard to see if you are getting penetration or not.

I think it would be nice to add average multiplier to the website. Also please add average clan multiplier so you can see if the banner stack is dragging you up or down.

Suggestions Corner / Remove the ability of HA/HX to use armored horses

Just tie it to the horse' body armor. If body armor > 25, bow/xbow can't be equipped. If you bring out a melee weapon, you can.

The gun physics and movement are pretty damn spot on to real life with scope sway, recoil and bullet drop and accuracy.  If you carry a lot of weight, you move slower and if you are exhausted from sprinting, your aim is all over the place until you catch your breath.  Nothing new, as we have seen this with the Red Orchestra series, but the way they did it is probably the most accurate I have ever seen in a video game.  Oh, there is no x marks the spot hud, you have to use your iron sights, reflex or scope if you want to have a chance in hell at hitting anything. There is a laser attachment, for close in work, but its really not worth the weight on the outdoor maps.  The gun physics and movement is where this game shines, its like I'm at the range with how real to life the pistol, M4 and M1 shoot.  Your not going to be Rambo like in COD games.  Of course kneeling and prone give you better accuracy because it steadies you rifle.

So, far its pretty damn cool.  Its multiplayer only, except for the training missions, it's still in beta and actively supported by the devs with regular patches.  Ive played CS, CS:S and CS:GO and they all feel really unnatural in how you can take damage and run around the map like The Flash.  Don't get me wrong, they are fun in how unreal they are, but its not what anyone should expect in a combat situation and its not meant to be.  This brings a lot of realism to FPS, but not as deep and sim-like as the ARMA series; it concentrates mostly on the fun of infantry FPS without being bogged down in the systems and vehicles.  Its really biased toward team play and those with a group and a plan can dominate a bunch of lone wolfs in 8 out of 10 engagements.

Its worth the 13 bucks if you like a hard core multiplayer FPS.

General Off Topic / Linguistics quiz (if you were raised in the states)
« on: December 31, 2013, 11:41:05 pm »
I'm curious and chose that age group because that is around the time frame where kids began to have a lot of influence in what they read and hear from the internet. Television might have had a similar poll back around 1970, but when I grew up lots of parents thought it would ruin your eyes or some such and I tend to think that television viewing was more limited as result than internet access is today.
My kids are from Texas, but both of them (both!) were identified as being from southern California. Granted, I spent 3 years in San Diego from 19-21 and may have been influenced enough to reflect it in my speech, but had the far more identifiably southern phrases stand out in the quiz.
So I'm looking to see if there is a large difference between the age groups.

The quiz in case you missed that thread.

Suggestions Corner / Allow Skip the Fun Ranged only on DTV and Duel servers
« on: December 31, 2013, 08:21:52 pm »
As I've said before, ranged on the regular servers should have to earn their way to effectiveness and nobody should be able to instantly create a troll ranged build and add to the problem because some melee can be vocal about their frustration with ranged.

How can you change the WSE2 graphics without launching? Or reset to default?

Suggestions Corner / Make an Anti-ranged armor
« on: December 17, 2013, 03:14:11 am »
Create a special armor that reduces all ranged damage to 1 point with no stun (0 if it would normally do 0), but acts like a tunic vs melee weapons. (Armour 7)

Make it expensive.

That avoids the whole buff shields issue.

Realism? Who gives a shit. Its a video game.

Suggestions Corner / Do no allow ranged Skip the Fun
« on: December 16, 2013, 01:24:33 am »
I've brought it up before. Many times when the server is flooded with ranged, especially HA/HX types, there are a number of STF toons.

If someone wants to be ranged and add to the grief that melee is feeling, let them grind the levels for it on an alt or dedicated main. I certainly don't like the idea of limiting what % of the servers players can be a certain class, but making someone grind out a class until they are useful doesn't bother me.

STF should be for new players to try out builds, not for veterans to make instant troll classes and the new players should learn melee first anyhow.

Suggestions Corner / LolStab blocking
« on: December 15, 2013, 05:55:41 pm »
I'm still seeing some disagreement with stabs, and I know it isn't just 1 handers. Pretty much any melee stab causes someone's butthole to pucker. So here's a thought:

What would be the effect on the game if a block in any direction were to block a stab. Would that make it better for people who have an issue with the way stabs work now? I think Tydeus has tweaked the stab itself as best he can, so would something like this help at all?
