The Last Kingdom

For those interested the BBC have done an adaptation of Bernard Cornwell's The Last Kingdom series:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Kingdom_(TV_series)

2 episodes out so far. Just watching the 1st and seems to be the BBC's Game of Thrones/Vikings (though obviously toned down).

Seems to be fairly true to the books as well.

I'm sure you can probably DL it somewhere.

Actually currently listening to the books as audio books, with a pretty great narrator. Been looking forward to the TV series.

GoT/vikings ripoff

Not really anything like GoT tbh. Maybe more like Vikings but as it's based on books I love and following the story closely I can't really complain.

GoT/vikings ripoff

Mybe Vikings. It even has that brownish gray filter you find in every modern movie and show that has vikings in it. Definately not GoT. Are you trolling? I dont seriuslly understand how its even remotely similar to GoT. Like even an inch? It has...swords?

I want to like this show, I really do. I've read the books and this weekend binge watched the first 4 episodes and the amount of "meh" I feel is really disappointing. I'm not sure what it is, maybe it's the acting, but I really don't feel like it's that good of a show. If you haven't seen the first episode stop here.

In fairness that's how I felt Alfred came across in the books.

So far it's got very good reviews though from what I've seen.

Where'd you get the next 2 episodes? I've just been watching on iplayer and only 2 out.

Yeah, I agree, he was a turd in the books too. I think I was just super pumped for the show and went in expecting more cause of it. By no means is it terrible, I was just kind of disappointed. I think it will get better once they settle into their roles more. Fingers crossed.

Episode 5 comes on this Saturday at 10PM!!!!!!!!!!!

It does suffer from looking BBC, although so far the scale of battles is beyond what you'll normally get from the BBC (see Sharpe) so i'm happy for that. It irritates me that most medieval shows end up looking more like people cosplaying than anything else, but not everyone has a Game of Thrones budget. I hate grey filters. Seem unnecessary.

In the same token, BBC usually does a great job at casting. I hope I was just drunk and that fucked up my perception of it. I'm basing my opinions solely on two other shows I'm currently watching, Vikings and Outlander. Both did a great job casting, although being further along (vikings) and having a bigger budget (outlander) they may not be good comparisons to be making. As they are different (for the most part), I just like the actors better in both of those vs. this one. I digress, it is early in the shows existence so I'll give it more time and report back my feelings next week, not that they matter to anyone but myself.

I dindt expect anything,  never heard of the books. and am totally hooked.  I can totally zone in and like the hole package: acting, pictures everything : )
Yes, I know from whence I came! Discontented as a flame, Upon myself I live and glow. All I grasp like lightning flashes, All I leave behind is ashes
Flame I am - that much I know!

So far I haven't seen enough to really judge. But I like the casting of Uhtred (even if he does seem more than a little Ragnar Lothbrok like at times) and Brida. Father Beocca is reasonably close to how I imagined him as well at least in manners.

Wasn't Aengaland or however it's spelt meant to be the term used by Saxons when they came over in the 500s since they were Aengals or something.
